I no longer have grandparents. Is there any way to socialise with elderly people in the community?

I’m sorry that you no longer have your grandparents around but it’s so lovely to read that you want to spend time with elderly people, especially since the stats on elderly loneliness and depression are so heartbreakingly high. Most regions have a local volunteering hub, where people can go to be connected to volunteering positions. A council office or shout out on a local Facebook community page should get you an answer/contact for the hub. Then they may have one or two options for you, either through local charities, care homes or other services. I used the above way to become a ‘befriender’ to elderly and vulnerable people in my local area and it has been incredibly rewarding. I’d say that using this route, or a charity like AgeUK, is the best way to connect with those who really need company. Meeting older folk in social/public spaces like at clubs, libraries or museums is also an option but these will be people who are able to get themselves out and about with some independence. The elderly people who are really struggling or who might be housebound are sometimes only known to local social workers and charities (and that’s where you can make the biggest difference). As others have said, it might also be worth keeping an eye out for anyone in your neighbourhood who might look like they need help or company. We have an older lady on our road who doesn’t really go out and her garden is unkempt so she appreciates someone saying hello and doing some mowing for her. Lastly, it might be worth looking into getting a basic DBS security check. I needed this just to become a telephone befriender (not even in person) because obviously these people are vulnerable to criminal exploitation. It’s handy to have either way.
