Green Card but no US Passport, is that a problem?

Some jobs (if not most) require a US Passport along proof of the right to work in the United States. I’m guessing that’s for travel purposes, a US Passport gets you in and out of places easier.
Now, doesn’t a green card serve that exact purpose? to give people permanently living in the USA the same privileges as american citizens, minus the right to vote or government positions.
Now sure, there are pilot jobs where a US Citizenship is mandatory.
But I guess my question is this: when a job lists a Valid US Passport as required, does that just means what it means and green card holders should not be applying?
Or would a valid and unrestricted passport do the job?
Do we have non US Citizens flying in the US in here with info maybe?
