I'm 23 and have more or less given up on a decent future. As far as I see it, right now is more or less the peak of my life, and I've gotayeb 3-5 more years before shit really starts hitting the fan. As for what I'm doing about it, I'm mostly just trying to live in the moment and focus on what matters most to me, that is to say friends, family and building community, and am way less invested in my job, despite currently working in a relatively high-paying field(software/tech). Some part of me wants to save up enough money to fuck off into the woods, but I know I can't survive alone and as it stands now I don't have the resources or community to start an off-grid commune. Gonna keep living in the moment, and hopefully have a few more good years before I'm really struggling to survive. No chance I have kids, and my biggest hope now is that my parents will still be able to retire and enjoy the rest of their time on earth, even if my future won't be as good as theirs.

Lets make an off grid community? Like people who dont want to live in todays modern constructs, we should actively formulate a plan to cultivate and grow a community that doesn’t rely off of a tyrannical government

Some of us who already live off grid are going to need more help some day. Invest in some skills -- they'll be more valuable than money at some point. If you want to be in the woods, you can be in the woods.

I agree it's problematic. That is how the capitalists want it. The thinking is housing is worth $xxx and it'll take $xxx hours of work in lieu of cash. A person's body, in effect becomes a debt. There's an alternative, where there is no cash price for a human being's creativity or production. I'm just a hippy doing hippy things to make some joy outside of capitalism right now. I enjoy it, and I don't have kids and I will age. It's horrifying to think of this land just being hoarded by one person until they die. Whole reason I went off grid was to separate myself from that mentality. It does piss me off how brutal the "work for rent" landlords are. If we're ever going to escape that, we need to start trying now. Communes will always need communists.

Best to live in the moment now. The preppers are prepping for a very bleak future. I to don't believe i could survive even with all the survival skills I have learned in the boy scouts, military, Forest Serice work, and years of camping and backpacking. Why? Because life without even a primitive society or a functioning environment is not worth living. As a Buddhist, i plan to take my final days as a cue to practice...deep meditations on "emptiness," and follow the ascetic path of renunciation of the Buddha before his enlightenment. My wife wants to trip/drug her way out when the time comes. As things get worse, it will be increasingly difficult to live an ethical life. Obtaining food and water will eventually mean doing direct harm to other people or other living beings, in ways that can't be avoided. One might say this is already happening. Having swore an oath as a lay practicing Buddhist, i refuse to make my life about harming others or robbing others of a chance to survive because of my own will to survive. I choose to bow out when the time comes. Though, to be honest, as a 41 year old with no children and who is relatively antisocial and gets excited about silent meditation retreats, this is easy for me to say. After a year of experimenting with ayahuasca, mushrooms, and ketamine trips, i am much less feaful of death than i once was. The preppers have the problem of being consumed by their fear of death..it will eventually cause them to commit harm upon others for their own survival. Those thinking otherwise lack an imagination for how easy it is to die without modern medicine and suffer from a giant ego/overcomfidence about their survival abilities on a world with biosphere collapse. I do not have this issue. I am more fearful of what might happen if i start to starv...the harm i might do to others...better to quit while I can. I am nowhere near this, but knowing that this collapse is not going to be the standard civilization collapse that has happened hundreds of times since the dawn of agricultural civilizations nearly 6-10,000 years ago, helps me stay centered in knowing that surival in the bleak post collapse world of polycrisis and biosphere collapse is not worth sacrficing my ethics for. If most of life is going to die, then it is pointless to strive to be the last one alive. That bleak exhistance is far more terrifying than the momentary pain associated with death. Preppers, thanks, but no thanks.

I don't care about surviving in general let alone enough to directly harm others for my own sake. However I don't expect it will be a case of everything being ok and then suddenly falling apart. Rather I can see a series of contractions and upheavals where things recover for a while after an incident instead of just descending straight into chaos. For instance events may occur where food or water shortages arise due to short term issues with some semblance of normality returning after they are resolved. This is mostly what I am prepared for with food and water stocks. Mostly it's just for the peace of mind of knowing I won't have to panic in the event of such an incident. With rising food prices though it has also just proven prudent to stockpile food. Rather than buying noodles, for instance, at £2 a pack every month I only buy them when they are reduced back to the old price of £1.50 and stock enough for several months when they are. Since Covid supermarket stock has been noticeably erratic too with some things just not being available randomly so it has been handy to have this stockpile. I have no illusions about it enabling me to survive for a long time in a proper end of the world scenario and no real desire to do so. That's why I also have the tank of nitrogen. I find that comforting to have too as suffering is really the only thing I fear.

Don't give up. I have a random thought but if you can save a few grand, why don't you ask on this chat to see if there are people around you willing to buy land together? You could create something safe with people who feel the same way you do, working together to create a thriving community. You're only 26. I'm worried about the future but I won't give up. It isn't a mental health crisis, it's a crisis of human identity, trapped inside a crumbling playhouse with roles to fill that dont make sense anymore, and we're not adapting but instead are pretending like there's something wrong with the kids. The kids are fine. The kids are responding to a state of emergency. It's the rest of us that are acting insane. Imagine a culture where wealth is how much you can carry on your head. It started off with a hat, which was so chic, so everyone did it. Then someone got two hats, so everyone else wanted two. Eventually, people would be stacking so much weight on their head their necks would be breaking. That's what's upsetting the children. They don't understand any of this or why it's even a good idea to stack bricks and crap on their heads, just because that's what we've been doing. Sure, it worked for a moment but this is out of control. There's people dying everywhere from just trying to survive in this insane hat culture. The older people don't get the problem because they were there when people started wearing hats. Their necks have had time to adapt to the weight. But the kids are being started with 50lbs and expected to add more every day. Not wanting any of this is not mental illness, rather it's the people who created the problem holding the power to definine mentally ill and "normal" i.e. most hats possible. This title might as well read "mental health crisis in teens over impending asteroid impact" or "counseling crisis: why isn't therapy working to make kids comfortable with doomsday?". You built a doomsday device and handed them a pair of pliers and said "dont worry, you'll figure it out... or you'll go extinct... now, here's your math lesson". It's never the children that are experiencing a mental health crisis. Children are wired to be resilient but they're also wired to be observant and live in reality. They can't NOT see their future burning down, and we're blinded by what this stupid hat wearing nonsense has given us... mostly an excess of hats. None of this is real. You are a real human being. Your flag and your team and your party and your car and all that crap isn't real. It needs to be constantly replaced to stop it from rotting in front of us. It's all pre-garbage. This is all an elaborate illusion of progress but cannot be progress because progress continues and can be handed down, it doesn't stop at a certain point and drop off suddenly. That's sabotage, not progress. This is one lifetime old and it's already changed the planet to make it inhospitable for life and filled with cancer and disease instead. One human lifetime of living the way we plan to continue, tomorrow. How do you do it? How do you pretend that you're not the problem? How do you dismiss the young people that don't want to go extinct because your way of life has changed the planet we live on? How are we not teaching them to do something else? How are we not doing that immediately? Why is any of this appealing? Im clearly not the only one that's fully fed up with pretending this is the right way to do things, but why are we still letting the people that built this sinking ship tell us what is and what isn't normal or ok to be upset about? "Climate anxiety" is the pathology of living in reality while trapped in a cultural delusion, which really messes with your head... because why would it ever be true that everyone else is acting crazy while you're sane? That's not how crazy works... wait... is that what "crazy" has always been? Realizing how stupid and pointless all this is? We're silencing legitimate critique by treating awareness as a disease state. I cannot articulate how much I hate being a part of this moment. We're all still chasing the money and not holding it accountable, and it's 40C in May in places it's never been 40C. The science has always been there, now the reality is becoming unavoidable, but somehow I still live in a world where the only meaningful way to spend your time is making the planet more alien. I cant even have this conversation irl. Not a single person I know will entertain the DISCUSSION that there might be more to being human than what we've been doing since 1970. Where is the courage to stand up and say "we are living wrong, unless murdering a planet is on your bucket list, and we need to knock it off, immediately!"? I see people talking about oil and driving to climate parades to hold up signs that might as well say "im protesting what i do with all of the rest of my time". Dont like climate change? Good! Me neither. Now, put down the gas can, as a start. Next, stop caring about tokens. We can't buy a new atmosphere! It's 2023. In the entire time we've known it was wrong to burn fossil fuels - like, radioactive waste level wrong - we have done exactly NOTHING to move away from them. There is no such thing as a "green" car, unless we're talking about a used bike. Roads are oil. Concrete is even worse. We are still waiting to start changing the way we live and it's been 40 fucking years at least. Ask anyone about climate change and they'll either deny it or say the right things and then get right back to what they were doing, like that isn't the problem. This is all the problem. The pace, the trajectory, the competition, it's a warmonger's wet dream. Why are we helping? Why are we committed to helping? Why, instead of being afraid of the institutions that have knowingly encouraged this, aren't we holding them accountable? Because we still believe in money as the most important thing. And the worst of us have the most of it so we let them do whatever they want, while putting people stealing for food, in prison. Maybe I died and this is hell. It's certainly my hell. I can talk about anything I want as long as it's not the one thing I feel compelled, as a human being, to discuss. If I want to feel companionship of any kind, I have to pretend the thing I want to change the most is the thing I most value. I cant find anyone who actually wants to live differently, im just waiting for a moment that will never come. My life is purgatory. I've been ready to work on this problem for 20 years, and was willing to wait 10. Now, I dont know what to do other than go back to being a part of the problem. Spend whatever months there are of this earth left, in some factory making the earth warmer rather than being outside, with other humans, accepting our fate together while trying to repair what little we can. You never expect to be the only person you can find to see something a certain way. I dont know what to do about that. It's incredibly painful.

Unpopular opinion on my part, but this is why I truly feel most modern forms of 'therapy', such as cognitive behavioral therapy, are nothing more than fancy gaslighting. They no doubt have some uses, such as changes in *behaviors*, no doubt. A good example is if you have recurrent fears of driving on flying, or you are a drug addict and have trigger/cue points, CBT can be very helpful. But for understanding your life and dealing with depression and existential dread? CBT is totally useless. Better modalities of therapy exist, such as Jungian therapy, or existential therapy. DBT is also a highly modified version of CBT that is IMO much more adapted to these more difficult discussions...but in general, due to our cultures 'quick fix' take on a lot of things, people don't necessarily want to do a lot of work in therapy, they just want to feel better...and then wonder why it doesn't work. CBT, in my opinion, is like going to a yoga class for 35 minutes a week and trying to become a shredded bodybuilder. I mean, it has some benefits I suppose for a few moments of that day you do it, ok. But, let's be honest, if you want to change your physique and grow some serious muscle, you're going to have to ultimately just stop being a whimp, and learn to deal with how to be uncomfortable, many days of the week. It's not easy, yeah, it kind of sucks. But you know what happens, almost universally, is that people actually start to enjoy the challenge and the pain of training. Then it almost becomes you vs yourself. To me, that is real therapy. And btw, it's my opinion that most people in therapy are not actually in therapy. They're in 'talk to me for 45 minutes each week!' which is nice, but it doesn't actually do anything. I have always been, and will always be, the person who believes that actual real therapy is very uncomfortable. In fact, in the context of things like psychodynamic therapy, there's an adage that says, the more you hate your therapist, the better the therapy likely is. There is actually some truth to this. Anyway, just some monologue on my feelings of this. Don't gaslight yourself, your feelings are valid, whoever reads this.
View on Reddit #1636614

surfeen74@reddit

I share similar feelings to you. Therapy was helpful when I had something concrete to work on. A trauma, a disorder, etc. Once that was resolved it basically became my therapists treating it like a phone call I'd have with a friend, because therapy as a school of thought has not evolved with the times. There is no answer to depression and anxiety born from the climate crisis, the economy, etc. It becomes very "just deal with it" because obviously breathing exercises and workbooks are not going to remove the stressor. I can't EMDR the economy away.

While I fully agree with you, I have to ask. What should you’re therapist do, if he’s probably having the same feelings? We are all trapped in this system we have no control over, just waiting for it to break down.

If they're a competent therapist they would never tell you about their feelings, because that's not what they are there for. And I don't know which country you're from, but in my homecountry, they don't make nearly as much and are actually happy when you finish your theraphy.

Same. Therapy was good at unearthing a lot of past trauma I had repressed, so then I could begin to reflect on those things, so it wasn't just seemingly random panic attacks. But yeah, our society is what's ill and talking about how much I'm worried about the destruction of nature, it's not going to stop flora and fauna from going extinct. &nsbp; At least kids and teens are more cognizant than sooo many adults who just pretend everything is fine. I'm sad for the world they have to grow up in.

View on Reddit #1704068

Exposure therapy is effective. But the key to it, you have to be nervous during it. If you are not, it won't be effective. This is why, in general, I think anti-anxiety medication is not helpful long term. There is a ton of evidence to this.
View on Reddit #1751998

deinterest@reddit

Not all anxiety medication completely erases nervousness though. Like the heavy stuff that ends in -pam sure. But there are some antidepressants that take the edge off but you will still have to do the work. I get what you mean though, you have to feel the fear to overcome it. But I know people that did the whole exposure thing and remained very prone to anxiety attacks and the low dose meds really helps them function. Though to be frank, I think they might be on the spectrum so their nervous system is more sensitive as it is.

What I don't understand is why initial diagnoses don't get courses of treatment that have objective data backing them up. If you experience a trauma and suffer PTSD, for example, why don't you get a slowly tapered-off dose of an anti-anxiety drug per day, an hour of Tetris per day, and CBT twice a week, as a baseline? There are standard courses of treatment for every other medical science. I understand people are unique, but statistics exist, too.

It's not even a real assumption so much as it is a linguistic tendency to default to the masculine, because the masculine often serves as something like a "secondary" gender-neutral. Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's something we've borrowed the habit of from other languages.

Rather than a specific story, I would offer up a general observation of kids obsessed with entertainments. Boys playing video games and openly talking about porn in class. Studies show kids are actually having less sex as teenagers now than in the past and in a large point because porn is ruining (primarily male) sex drives. The girls fare no better, as they relentless put themselves down in comparison to the ideal bodies they see presented to them in media. Fat shaming and bullying are so much more blatant and persistent than I've ever seen in the past. Escapism into the digital realm is a major factor in collapse and is likely to lead to future citizens who are greatly damaged by this experience psychologically and socially.

As a GenX, we grew up worried about worldwide nuclear war. So, I get why GenZ is worried about the issues in the article. Plus, my generation didn’t have the internet and social media where our issues were constantly being shoved in our faces
View on Reddit #1645644

99PercentApe@reddit

Are you sure the worry about nuclear war was widespread? I’m at the tail end of GenX and during my childhood the iron curtain fell and Russia joined the global market. It never seemed like a nuclear exchange was ever likely. (My opinion on the risks are very different now, I’m just saying that it was not a part of my formative years.) In my youth I had nothing but hope for the future. I now write software for a living as I completely believed that technology was going to lead to ever increasing prosperity, and that the decentralised internet was going to put information and power in the hands of the people. I even believed that the ability to communicate with anyone and everyone on the planet would lead to tolerance and understanding. It seems so naive now but I know I was not alone. It’s wild to think that a technology designed to be decentralised, with a frankly tiny cost of setting up a server, has come to be dominated by half a dozen companies. It’s also incredibly sad how much damage has been done by these companies in trying to monopolise our attention by appealing to the basest of our instincts … fear, hate, self importance, greed, lust, etc etc. Wow the internet is a hell of a toxic place for teens to hang out for [over 8 hours a day on average](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/24/well/family/child-social-media-use.html). Smartphones, I have come to believe, are the worst thing that has ever happened to children. Their schooling has been ruined, their socialisation has been ruined, their self confidence has been ruined, their concentration has been ruined. They can be subject to online bullying while alone in their own safe space at home. They can be made to suffer for childish mistakes for years thanks to photos and videos. Truly I wish that schools would ban them. If I had my way, they’d be Nokia plastic bricks forever by law. A bit rambling but, in summary, yeah childhood sucks now in comparison to our own. And it’s going to get a whole lot worse.

Nuclear war is literally optional, it's about those damned switches and buttons. All it requires to get over it is to understand that the threat is affected by a very small number of people who can be selected to be mentally and emotionally capable not being complete fools. That's doable, as evidenced by we existing currently. To put it in modern terms, nuclear war fits neatly in the techno-hopium beliefs since it's technology that "works" simply by not being used. It's a techno-fix by existing in a deactivated form. None of that applies to climate chaos and biosphere collapse.

I do think meds have their place, but I also agree that they are prescribed more often than they really should. Mental illness is, a lot of the time, an understandable response to poverty and hopelessness rather than a chemical imbalance.

Ed-Saltus@reddit (OP)

Exactly. We have all sorts of ways to cure pregnancy, chemically or surgically, but people still have sex because, unconsciously, their lower brain thinks they are reproducing. Every single time we have sex, we get a burst of neurochemicals, a reward for doing something we were programmed to do. Science has not stopped the scourge of reproduction, nor literacy or education. People will keep trying to reproduce until the end of time. We don't know why we do it, and for the most part we don't seem to care.

So, children are 40x more likely to be killed by gunfire outside of school and 80x more likely to be killed in an automobile accident than in a school shooting. Children are terrified of school shootings because the media blows it out of proportion and focuses on it rather than the main sources of child death.

At what point do we stop considering it a mental health issue and not a genuinely rational reaction to the state of things?

One-on-one counseling at best. At most, the teens will just be put on some kind of drug and make to feel like they have a mental illness and not that society is crumbling.

The news piece tries to make it look like it was the "lockdowns" that are the problem, not **the reason why the mediocre lockdowns were required**. These people think kids are **that** unaware. What the teens learned (or are starting to), as a crash course in collective human stupidity, is that the adults don't really give a shit and aren't doing anything good about it. That is a very brutal lesson. That's at the level of the kids learning, from first hand experience, that the religious institutions in their lives are full of predators who can't be easily stopped. See /r/pastorarrested.

I’m a 46 year old man and shit looks bleak to me as well. I see all these same issues and it makes my heart heavy that young people will not inherit a better world at the pace and direction we are moving. I hope it gets better and I’m trying with all of my limited ability to affect positivity in my little circles I move in but I feel like I’m fighting the tide.

Im a teacher - middle school and this is the hardest year I have experienced. Students are a mess but getting a little happier. It’s now a job hazard to possibly be shot by my own students. This is my 25th year teaching and I have 5-7 more to go.

Published recently on ABC Action News, the following article covers a brief overview of the new CDC report on youth mental health. The findings were grim, unsurprisingly, and point to several factors that feed this disaster. Collapse related because nothing will be done, aside from one-on-one counseling to teach kids to survive in a world torn asunder.

Well we did this to them. Starting about 15 years ago, the 24 hour news cycle combined with the growth of social media means there is a constant cycle of BAD NEWS IN YOUR FACE, and there's basically no escaping it. Even if your everyday life is peaceful and normal, you will constantly be forced to witness every bad event from everywhere in the western world on constant repeat. CLIMATE DOOM is reported every day, even though it's a slow-moving disaster that should not trigger daily anxiety and existential crises. We can and are doing things about it. Then we have all the clowns here in /r/collapse who are just making things worse for themselves by hyper-focusing on the negative instead of enjoying the fleeting time any of us have on this planet.
