What’s a stereotype joke of people that come from your city/town?

Posted by MajesticRate1818@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 254 comments

I’m new to the uk so I’m genuinely curious on the different areas and their stereotypes or funny assumptions about them.

Mossley, inbreds... I remember as a kid, everyone quite openly joked about having 6 toes on one foot and other weird deformities. Moved there when I was quite young. Scary part is, a lot of the folk from the village are closely related. I know of more than a handful who have had children with 2nd/3rd cousins (*shudders*). I 'member a trip to Buxton back around 2011 and a fella on the train who we got talking to started a conversation along the following lines: Fella: Where are you all coming from? Us: Mossley Fella: ain't that the inbred village? Us: Dying with laughter

Sheep shaggers
View on Reddit #17968629

EquivalentIsopod7717@reddit

How does a Welshman find a sheep when it's hidden covertly in long grass? Very alluring.
View on Reddit #18030091

SkullKid888@reddit

You didn’t ask but I’m gonna tell you. I heard sheep shaggers originated because “back in the day”, rustling sheep was punishable by death, but having sex with them wasn’t. Welsh rustlers took advantage of this by declaring “we were just shagging them” when they got caught and thus they developed the reputation.
View on Reddit #17973335

JonnyBhoy@reddit

If you're going to get hung for stealing a sheep, shag the flock.

It wasn't really religious, I believe. Religion was a pretty surefire and accurate way to divide people into what they were, Irish identifying and British identifying individuals. In the south in 2022: 1.5% black, 3.7% Asian, 1.3% orher, 6.7% not listed. In the north in 2021: 3% are listed as other, which encompasses black, Asian, and not listed. The numbers of black and other non-white people in Northern Ireland is so small that we’re looking at tenths of a percent for each group. Clearly Northern Ireland is being overrun 🙄

I always think of this joke: A Welshman, an Irishman and a Scotsman go into a pub. They all have a severe stutter. "What's it to be?" asks the stunningly beautiful landlady. "Th th th th three pi pi pi..........." says the Welshman. Up steps the Irishman. "Three p pints of of of of gui gui gui........" Then the Scotsman tries. "Th th th th th th th......................" "Oh sod this!" says the beautiful landlady and walks away to serve someone else. She returns ten minutes later and asks if they are ready to order yet. "Th th th th three pi pi pi pi", stutters the Welshman "Three pints of gui gui gui gui........." tries Paddy. And then Scotty starts "Th th th th th th th...........". "Look" says the beautiful landlady, who loves a bet? "If any one of you can tell me where you live without stuttering I'll let you make love to me!" Quietly confident that no one will win, she turns to the Welshman. "Where do you live then boyo?" "C C C C CC AAAA.......Rrrrrrr.... ..." "No. You lose." says the beautiful landlady. Turning to the Scotsman, "Where do you live Scotty?" she asks, trying not to laugh. "E E E Ed Ed Edin Edin Edin Edinb." "No. You lose." says the gorgeous woman. "And Paddy, where do you live?" she purrs at the Irishman. "London" blurts out the Irishman. "Oh no!" says the landlady. A great cheer goes up in the pub and the landlady reluctantly takes him by the hand and leads him upstairs. Once in the bedroom she strips to her underwear, next she takes off her bra exposing a voluptuous bosom. Finally she slides off her panties then climbs into bed. Paddy with concentration furrowing his brow, climbs on and goes for glory, and then, right at the end he suddenly screams out........... ".......D D D Derry!!"

Not from UK but that reminds me of the old joke about my Illinois hometown, Summit-Argo: "My date said, 'Oh baby, kiss me where it stinks!' so I took her to Corn Products." That's the plant where Yankees make our Karo Syrup and Argo Corn Starch, but it got a bad rap for the smell. It was a cocktail of their funes, an oil refinery, a chemical plant (that later blew up) and a nearby sewage treatment facility situated on a "sanitary canal". The stench inspired another joke: "You like my cologne? It's called 'Evening in Argo' ."

I love me a Brummie accent. It's warm, friendly, unpretentious. Probably helps that I grew up there until I was 4. When we moved right down south I was mocked by the southern kids for not knowing what this midday meal called 'lunch' was - that was dinner where I was from. I was further informed that dinner was the meal you had at 6pm with your family. Confused, I asked what tea was then, and was told it was a hot drink. I quickly lost my accent.

My Brum family are all proper salt of the earth good people, my dad, uncle and aunts do social work for vulnerable people. You used take someone to the scrumpy pub in Bath, the best one is sadly no longer, but first of all, you watch their faces as they realise the pub is full of rugby players and the whippet on a string brigade and they all appear to be drinking orange squash and arguing over whether its better to have slices of orange or lemon in it. This is proper scrumpy. Idiot visitors then try to order a pint, the more cautious will consider the size of some of the blokes drinking half pints and go along with the crowd. Unfortunately you will be given pure scrumpy. Most of the regulars are drinking “mix” which is half scrumpy, half sweet cider. You will not be told till you a) fall over, or b) wake up with scrumpy tummy. It’s quiet, we have to get our laughs somewhere. 🤷‍♀️🤣

Yeovil apparently used to have the highest percentage of unarmed assault when I was growing up. The joke was that it was only so high because they hadn’t discovered tools or fire yet.
View on Reddit #17966999

To be fair if you grew up in one of the smaller towns or villages going to Yeovil was a big deal as it seemed to us to be really cultured and fancy. As for the annual trip to Taunton, we would talk about that for months

Can confirm. As a 16 year old I lived in Minehead and travelling to Taunton to buy a few bits felt like a big deal.

The stereotype from my home town (Olney) is that everyone's inbred and has webbed toes. I can confirm that some of the older families in town who'd been there for generations had kids with webbed fingers and/or toes. I knew at least 4 kids while I was going through school who had some webbing surgically removed. Fortunately for me my parents were outsiders who moved to town before having me.
