A handy guide I made for Canada's totally reasonable and not confusing firearms laws

The way Canada seems to be going, everything on the right side of the list will end up on the left side in 10 years. I hope my peaceful neighbors to the north reverse the crap that is going on.
I saw a video where the Single Shot Ruger No.1 was banned because it could be chambered in 460 Wetherby.
_BergundyBandanas_@reddit
Yep. On a positive note though, the conservatives are expected to win a major majority in 2025 and have said they will repeal the handgun & ar15 ban.
Hopefully they aren’t just bullshitting to get the gun owners votes… which they probably are
UpbeatBaseball6897@reddit
Ha! LoL! Keep dreaming!
_BergundyBandanas_@reddit
No need, I already own all the guns I want from pre ban times.
No_News_1712@reddit
Can we not hate each other? People are getting way too heated and angry over this. Debate is healthy, this talk is not.
10gaugetantrum@reddit
Hopefully the Canadian conservatives have the freedom of the people in mind. Here in the US even a lot of the conservatives are not completely pro gun.
Superducks101@reddit
They just do what it takes to stay in office. Not the actual will of the people they represent.
Chance_Anon@reddit
Hey look at that it only took one year
10gaugetantrum@reddit
LOL. I still get people arguing with about this. I forgot about this comment.
MrPanzerCat@reddit
Bruh why they worried about 460 wby... that shit would do more damage to the shooter than the target and theyd probably miss 95% of shots
Waste-Conference7306@reddit
It's not going to take 10 years.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys@reddit
This is your own fault Canada.
AccomplishedFee6809@reddit
Yah your not wrong im canadian and i feel surrounded by idiots at times..we do have 1/5 of gun related homicides though compared to the USA I believe..that could be right or wrong but im sure its less bit regardless theyve taken it too far and its goona leave us with only criminals and cops with firearms..they literally basically want you to help the ppl breaking into your house take your stuff instead of protecting yourself and yoyr property
Pa1nless_89@reddit
Yeah no. Gotta remember Trudeau got elected with less than 20% of total voters including those who didn't vote and 30% of people who went in voted. This is our democracy.
Heeeeyyouguuuuys@reddit
Oh, geez thanks for trying to correct me on my point by underlining how it is in fact Canada's own damn fault being so cucked by such a tiny minority.
tyler111762@reddit
hey, whos your president right now? remind me real quick.

This post didn’t age well
Zvcb9t9@reddit
The Bren 2 is also a thought after alternative for an AR, How would you guys compare the 2, could you hold the Lockhart raven over the Bren as a solid AR sub choice?
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Absolutely not, I have both a Raven and a Bren and I would take the Bren any day. The Raven feels like it's made of lego.
Zvcb9t9@reddit
Ok, that's good to know from someone who's used both, thanks!
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Some people swear by it and I have no idea why. Granted I bought it right when it came out so maybe they hadn't ironed out the issues yet but my problems with it are:
Overall it feels like a toy gun that would be good at the $1300 price point but definitely not for the $2200-2500 they want for it. Perhaps with a bunch of mods it's good but I'd rather just shoot my bren which has none of these issues, came perfect out of the box, and is a good bit lighter.
Zvcb9t9@reddit
O wow, thanks!
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
This doesn't matter now because the raven is banned.
zw1616@reddit
Do t post this, the cad government could see it! We don’t want to loose our loopholes
GrouseDog@reddit
Ya just did.
zw1616@reddit
Atleast there are still a couple of them to play with untill February like the sks
RP4LFR@reddit
Come down to the states we dgaf!
zw1616@reddit
Is that why you guys pay a $200 tax stamp and the president want to ban ARs? Lol
RP4LFR@reddit
Hey, at least we can use our guns for self-defense… just saying
zw1616@reddit
Low blow man😂 haha states does have its merrits
RP4LFR@reddit
True unfortunately, though one thing that states that we are jealous of the Canadians is that we don’t have brothels down here 😭
zw1616@reddit
We have brothels up here?
RP4LFR@reddit
I don’t know I just heard about it didn’t know if you could confirm
zw1616@reddit
Shit idk maybe in the bigger cities, not in the north west where I am. You guys got glory holes unlike us so that could be a dub
RP4LFR@reddit
Meh it’s only a bunch of old gay guys with occasional swinger couple
zw1616@reddit
Ahh that’s too bad😂
RP4LFR@reddit
Yeah, by the way, are you guys able to order going straight to your house? I heard something about that.
zw1616@reddit
Order going straight? I don’t know what ya mean
RP4LFR@reddit
So whenever we want to buy a firearm in the states, we have to go to a brick and mortar store or three person with a federal firearms license if it’s a private sale, total bit different but… from what I heard Canadians are able to order like shotguns and stuff straight to their house?
zw1616@reddit
Oh yeah, we can order a non-restricted gun offline(I don’t know about short barrel rifles and no pistols now) and it gets shipped through Canada post(my local town doesn’t deliver to the door cause it’s too small but I pick them up at the post office(19 or older with a signature)
RP4LFR@reddit
See now this is the kind of thing I wish the states had… we have to go to a fucking gun store 😩
zw1616@reddit
Atleast you can make some friends while buying firearms. I personally would rather buy from a store, get the feel for it prior to purchase and if there is anything wrong I can just bring it back to said store and get it fixed or sent for warranty for free
RP4LFR@reddit
True, but it really depends where you’re at in the country a lot of these stores in the south run by a bunch of funds… not all of them but of course you get a lot of fudds who go into gun stores. Plus, a lot of people are not exactly thrilled about filling out a 4473.
zw1616@reddit
Yeah I like showing my firearm licence and reviving my new gun. No paperwork is the best paperwork
Royal-Employment-925@reddit
Loose? Are you sure about that?
zw1616@reddit
Huh? I already owned the typo but thanks ya twat😂
2bad-2care@reddit
Or lose them!
zw1616@reddit
Picked up my typo thanks lol
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Everything listed minus the SKS was already on the g4/g46 amendment list. They already know.
walmarttshirt@reddit
Why is the revolver illegal?
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
It's not technically illegal but you can't import them and you can't buy and sell handguns anymore, so the only people who can have/use them are people who had one prior to 2022.
0nly_Up@reddit
What's the deal with the antique being allowed? Is there a production year cutoff? Or is it because of the double action on the 686?
tyler111762@reddit
production year cutoff
Paulsur@reddit
How does anyone know if you had had one prior to 2022 or not?
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Pistols are registered here, you buy it then the store transfers it to you, which the government records, before you can take possession of it.
claybryse@reddit
That isn’t actually true. The 4473 you do is the only evidence of what firearm you purchased and that stays with the FFL until they close, then they are all shipped to an ATF warehouse. The background check the FFL does only asks whether you are allowed to purchase a type of firearm (rifle, shotgun, handgun, other). It is actually illegal for the feds to keep a digital copy of your 4473s when the FFL is closed as well and all of it is still paper.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
We're talking about an entirely different country bud
claybryse@reddit
Oh shit my bad
c_clanton@reddit
You are talking about the United States. Everyone else is talking about Canada.
nukey18mon@reddit
He was just anticipating for the impending annexation
Worried_Community594@reddit
Wut?
I'm actually kinda looking forward to the healthcare, french fries and gravy, decent maple syrup, but I don't know if I'm willing to give up the cool guns I have.
LuckyNumberS13V3N@reddit
All handguns are registered here. Not just when you buy it, but when it comes into the country. They know what dealer had it, who imported it, who bought it. Any link in that chain that is broken means the last one in legal possession gets jail time.
It's not like the grandfathered bans on mags or ARs in the States. You can't just pick one up elsewhere and swear you always had it. Everything is tracked and registered, specifically for this purpose. This is why registration ALWAYS leads to confiscation
chemicalgeekery@reddit
To add: The way the government "banned" handguns wasn't an outright ban. That's because they still haven't figured out how to confiscate the guns they banned in 2020 almost 4 years later. The cost estimate for that ban has soared to over $1B, and some estimates for the entire program are up to $5B. For about 250,000 or so rifles in total (though the actual number isn't known)
There are over million legally owned handguns in the country. So even though handguns are registered, they know that the cost and logistics involved in actually banning and confiscating them make it impossible.
So what they did is amend the law to say that "a registration certificate for a handgun must not be issued to an inidvidual"
That means that now it's impossible to legally transfer ownership of a handgun to someone else. A legal owner can't sell his handguns to anyone else, and it's now impossible for someone to legally buy a handgun.
So the government now doesn't have to go and confiscate handguns and pay compensation for them. They just have to wait for the owner to die, then the estate is forced their to turn them in for destruction. With zero compensation.
wpgffs@reddit
This will cost us more than last time when they implemented the long gun registry.
zw1616@reddit
Even the sks was on that list
dannysmackdown@reddit
Thankfully the natives saved us on that one. Common indigenous w
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
I am pretty sure it was one of very very few semiautos that wasn't.
zw1616@reddit
With the rumours of this pinned magazine ban the sks could be at risk once again
zw1616@reddit
It was a part of the c-21 list that was withdrawn including the garand and m1-carbines. Thank fully Canadian firearm owners and many native groups spoke up and put it away for now
Shitmonkey5425@reddit
Sks was on it, probably why the amendment got pulled tbh
zw1616@reddit
Good point:(
yourfavouritevillain@reddit
The smith and Wesson 686 revolver isn’t illegal. You just have to have owned it before the “freeze”
Distinct_Page_9628@reddit
True but the freeze is definitely permanent so basically a ban
yourfavouritevillain@reddit
Yeah for new owners for sure. But if you own pistols you can still legally use them.
Large_Cranberry1674@reddit
Unfortunately there is a flaw in your logic. People do not live forever. There is an expiration date. And there is no way to give your chrome S and W $1,500 fancy revolver to your kid to enjoy.
yourfavouritevillain@reddit
It’s a freeze on new transfers. If you currently have pistols registered in your name you are free to use them. It’s not my logic. It’s what the government decided.
AdNo1218@reddit
So my father wants to give his Webley mkvi from 1917 that's been passed down through the generations before his time expires. I'm getting my PAL/RPAL in a week. I've been told to disarm or surrender it. Is there any way around this? This law is BS.
Dexcessive@reddit
Can’t forget the AK vs Valmet
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
AK - illegal
Type 56 (Chinese licensed version of the AK) - illegal
Valmet (Finnish gun based on a Polish licensed version of the AK) - legal
Galil (Israeli design based on the Valmet) - illegal
GlassCanner@reddit
Isn't the Mini Thirty legal too?
Sonoda_Kotori@reddit
Banned in 2020.
ErikTheRed99@reddit
Oh look, there's a Valmet in my helmet.

itsallgoodman100@reddit

stay-frosty-67@reddit
Dude our government is trying to find every possible way it can ban firearms. I hate them so much. They rigged the last election and when our version of the FBI put out it’s evidence about it the liberal government tried to have some people criminally prosecuted
itsallgoodman100@reddit
My grandmother was born in Quebec and immigrated to New England as small child at the turn of the last century. Despite all of the problems here in the US, I can say I’m glad they left Canada. Join us. We need folks like you.

Why is the 686 illegal?
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
It's not technically illegal but you can't import them and you can't buy and sell handguns anymore, so the only people who can have/use them are people who had one prior to 2022.
The one on the right is legal because it's an "antique"
firearmresearch00@reddit
That makes more sense. I thought they flat out banned the 686 by name or something wacky
kapanak@reddit
They're certainly working towards such a thing slowly. It's a confiscation that works by waiting out current owners. They just didn't have the political will or the public support to outright ban over a million legally owned handguns right away, so they just froze all imports, sales and transfers back in October 2022, and put it in legislation just this past December 2023.
Zzombee@reddit
I hope there are some guns that may be lost in unfortunate boating accidents in the coming years.
Magic-Levitation@reddit
Would a gun trust work in Canada? In the states, you can create a gun trust naming multiple people as the beneficiaries. You can add and remove beneficiaries as much as you want. You could name your kids and the guns would pass to them. Could be a work around, but unsure of Canadian law.
stannis_the_mannis7@reddit
The government is trying to have a mAnDatOry bUyBaCk (confiscation) to take all these guns. The handgun freeze also freezes the transfer of handguns so they can’t be given to others when you die
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
No, all handguns are nearly-illegal, I just included that one specifically due to its visual similarity to the legal but much older antique gun.

Drunken_Grail@reddit
I thought canada had a short mag rule like cali, like 3 rounds or something, how would stuff like the ACR be legal?
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Our mags are limited to 5 rounds for centerfire semi auto rifles and 10 rounds for any caliber of pistols.
We can have 30 round mags but they have pins in them that limit them to only hold 5 rounds.
"AR-15 pistol" magazines are allowed up to 10 rounds.

Carcano_Supremacy@reddit
So how is it determined that the Mini 14 isn’t allowed but the SKS is? What kind of definitions are in place for that to even be possible?
_BergundyBandanas_@reddit
They ban firearm by model. Also the CZ bren 2 and B&T APC 223/308 are perfectly legal, but I can’t buy a fucking ar15 which does the exact same thing.
I swear they purposely leave us with shitty, overpriced guns to make it a rich man’s “sport”.

Wow interesting.
Sorry to you guys for having to deal with that, best of luck in Canadian firearms future.

Professional_Half449@reddit
Fun fact. Most of the rifles they make up there are absolute dogshit. The ar180s break drive rods. Dislodge gas blocks. Tilting carriers. Breaking carriers in the Raven. The t81, t97, Tavor, x95, those work. It's a sad state of affairs. I'm hoping PSA JAKL uppers get the greenlight to fit the AR180 lowers for them to have working modern rifles.
Gews@reddit
Yes, these Canadian-180s are made to a price point, for recreational shooters, by small businesses, and the Type 81, Type 97, Tavor, SKS, etc, were designed by skilled small arms engineers for military service. People are used to low prices of surplus weapons or AR-15s which have economy of scale behind them. I wouldn't expect the 180s to be reliable from these inexperienced companies at these bottom barrel prices.
Professional_Half449@reddit
The price point being as expensive as a good rifle that works, pertaining to the Canadian cope rifles. The wk180 is 1500, Templars are 2k-5k for the ".308" we can get BRN180s for 1k, JAKLs for 1k. Bullpup are still expensive, but they typically run. It's just the Canadian garbage sticks that are way overpriced and poorly built.
RidinCaliBuffalos@reddit
How is the mini 14 illegal? Sks is bigger round and is legal? Crazy legislators not knowing anything
Shitmonkey5425@reddit
The big two Canadian mass shootings involved the mini 14 so it’s like super extra evil, I read that the école polytechnic shooter had fucked with his mini 14 to try and make it full auto but it just ended up being a straight pull, could be wrong though
EvilWhiteVanMan@reddit
There is no reason behind it. It's prohibited because they can.

FashionGuyMike@reddit
What’s the difference between the top two ARs?
TheGreatTesticle@reddit
The shoulder thing doesn't go up on the legal one.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
The one on the right isn’t an AR. It looks like an AR, it takes AR parts (except for anything on the receiver), it is a direct impingement 5.56 semi auto but it’s technically not an AR so it’s legal.
The new upper they just came out with also has a forward assist that looks and functions exactly like an AR
SkinnyStock@reddit
So then how is it not an AR?
PrairieBiologist@reddit
Proprietary bolt carrier and single piece receiver. Basically the minimum changes the government would accept as not an AR.
SkinnyStock@reddit
Thank you for actually providing an answer!
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
It's not a single piece receiver, it's upper and lower like the AR.
If you want the actual answer as to why it's legal: the Raven was originally offered as a 9mm PCC, the 5.56 model was created with a different upper/barrel that swaps onto the lower of the 9mm model. This made it a "variant" of the 9mm model, which the RCMP acknowledged, meaning it's not a variant of the AR-15.
It looks and functions exactly like an AR-15 but everything is just a bit different. Dimensions are different, receiver parts are not interchangeable, etc.
The ATRS Modern Sporter (also on this list) tried the same thing but they went straight to the 5.56, rather than starting with the 9mm model like Lockhart did, so the RCMP accused them of just making a copycat AR-15 and sent them a cease and desist. Their case is currently in court which is why I put possibly illegal.
PrairieBiologist@reddit
I’ve looked into them because I want one and have just been waiting for enough other people to review them first. They make a model in .308 as well.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
What do you mean single piece receiver?
spoosejuice@reddit
I’m not familiar with that rifle, but I’m guessing that the upper and lower receiver is one piece unlike the AR15 which has a separate lower and upper receiver.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
No - I own one and it has a separate upper and lower.
spoosejuice@reddit
Then I don’t know

None of those guns are illegal, the laws claiming they are, are illegal. Keep that in mind.
This is not advice to break the law, it’s philosophical.
blackcarswhackbars@reddit
I'd sell all my guns for a $500 ar15. I hate it here lol
tylermm03@reddit
Move down south! We need pro gun people in NH and ME to help hold the line.
spoosejuice@reddit
You know it’s bad when you can’t even get a revolver in bear country
ChampionshipOwn7921@reddit
Not only revolver, you can’t get any type of handgun at all except for antiques.
Commissar_David@reddit
It's ok, the .22lr antique revolver will save the day.
stchman@reddit
The SCAR-17 and Bushmaster ACR look virtually identical.
Late-Ad-4624@reddit
Thanks. Thats as clear as mud.
Fyi i hate having to figure out what is or isn't illegal when it comes to adding cool stuff to my firearms.
EvilWhiteVanMan@reddit
That's one of the very few good things about Canadian gun laws. The legality of modifying legal firearms is clear as day.
Drpenguin37@reddit
At least the SKS is legal
Johnny-Unitas@reddit
Beretta cx4 storm illegal. Roger pc 9 legal.

mp5 illegal, B&T apc9k legal
Goodspeed137@reddit
Is this chart actually up to date or a few years old? I know there were a few major restrictions added on in the last couple of years.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
I literally made it today, it's correct as of right now.
Goodspeed137@reddit
Wow, they do have some weird laws. Although I can’t say that ours make a lot of sense either.
3202supsaW@reddit (OP)
Cali/NY laws really confuse me, like the ban on pistol grips that you can wrap your hand around lol. Totally nonsensical.
Goodspeed137@reddit
I tried understanding those, just out of curiosity, made no sense. The guys living there literally need to be lawyers to make sense of it all.
