Single Engine intercepted by F-16’s over my house.

Posted by Accomplished_Cod_950@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 204 comments

Little brother sent me this video today. Single engine piston (appears to be a low wing) intercepted by 3 F-16’s. This was over the Lowry neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. Pretty close to KBKF (Buckley Space Force Base) any idea why this would happen? I assume an exercise or a TFR violation?

The "low wing" has not been intercepted, it's a P-51 and a flight display.

Sordsman@reddit

I think the aircraft on the far right is a F-35. Makes this reasoning much more plausible.
View on Reddit #1614798

ThisIsPickles@reddit

Also, if it was an intercept, one would be way behind to shoot the small plane down if they try anything.
View on Reddit #1615455

causal_friday@reddit

What sort of thing can you even try in a small plane? "He's done it. He pooped himself and is crying at the same time." "Shoot him down."

Wasatcher@reddit

A single engine aircraft full of fuel can still explode and release a lot of energy. Or it could even have a bomb on board, who knows. There are Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) put in place for crowded sporting events and when high ranking government officials (POTUS, VP etc) come into town with this exact type of scenario in mind. Or just to prevent some idiot private pilot from accidentally crashing into a sensitive area

A Piper Warrior carries 50 gallons of fuel and weighs 2,550 pounds. An F-350 Super Duty carries 48 gallons of fuel and weighs 7,500 pounds. We've built an entire security infrastructure around restricting one and ignoring the other.

This isn’t true. In many intercepts at least in the US the intention is to divert the aircraft from some type of restricted airspace not to shoot them down. The diversion is usually escorted to a nearby field to land and met with law enforcement depending on the airspace that was entered. Even in the DC district airspace where they have ground based air defense the first response isn’t shooting someone down for, usually mistakenly, entering restricted airspace.
View on Reddit #1633881

ThisIsPickles@reddit

Oh I absolutely agree with this. But if you dont follow the F16 off your wing and turn away from the white house or the pentagon or whatever it is you are doing that requires an F16 to come check you out you bet your firt earned dollar that there is a second one you dont see that will take you down before you get a chance to get to do something really stupid. That's not to say that their intention is to shoot you down upon initial contact. But they will be ready to if they have to.
View on Reddit #1641013

aeroxan@reddit

That would seem to be the reason for TFRs to cover a pretty large area. Lots of time and distance to intercept and divert a plane before needing to do something more drastic.
View on Reddit #1634806

Not if they were trying to warn the plane before shooting it down.

I can tell because I knew about the flight happening before it happened 😂. They flew over my house and they were going way too fast for most GA aircraft. I’d imagine most military jets would struggle to cruise around in formation at 130-140 knots.

The thing that makes my head hurt is the F16 is about as old as I am- (1970s designed) and the p51 is as old as my dad is (1940s) and I don’t know the F35 history. The F16 is still a very modern plane and the staple of many militaries while the p51 was essentially obsolete in 15-20 yrs. What an amazing design for the F16, and F15 also. Someone should put an F-16 kill mark on N255DP, the (involuntarily) involved GA aircraft. The [mishap report](https://www.afjag.af.mil/Portals/77/AIB-Reports/2022/23%20March%202022%20ACC%20F-16%20Mishap%20Beauregard%20Parish%20LA,%20AIB%20Report%20for%20Public%20Release.pdf) redacted the identity of the involved GA aircraft...except for Figure 5 on page 8. I checked the flight history for N255DP on flightradar24 (because they had a free trial option that went that far back) and N255DP indeed was flying at the time of the F-16 accident (whose pilot successfully ejected with minor injuries). While there's a gap in N255DP's position data from 15:12 to 16:09 UTC, (accident happens at 15:58UTC ) its recorded positions before/after this are consistent with what's described in the mishap report.

That’s not an intercept, it’s a flyover, possibly even a heritage flight. The low wing piston you’re referring to looks like a P-51 and the far right jet is an F-35, with the others being 2 f-16s. This fits a PR, photo, or flyover mission given the mixed eras of aircraft.

View on Reddit #1638004

Initial-Conclusion-3@reddit

Serious question for when a *real* intercepting occurs: If an F-16 intercepts a 172, isn't there a danger of wake turbulence for the 172? In the AIM they mentioned how to communicate with the interceptor and follow its instructions, but I don't recall anything about whether the interceptor will fly in a proper position relative to wind and the target so that it doesn't cause the target to suffer, say, a flip over.
View on Reddit #1626812

mrbubbles916@reddit

There might be an issue if the jet is directly in front and slightly above the 172. But intercepts start out on the left wing. So no way wake turbulence is an issue there. If the 172 fails to respond to a few passes of the F-16 then they will generally perform a cross in front of the 172 to try and wake you up. Wake turbulence *may* be an issue in that case but it's not that big of a deal at altitude. It could be anything from a simple bump to a second or 2 of loss of control but once you are through the wake it's back to normal Wake turbulence is more of an issue close to the ground when landing. Losing control near the ground is what can cause accidents (obviously).

Not intercepted, it was a planned event. P51 Stang Evil used to be a Colorado ANG airplane before it was bought after service and owned privately. This was for the 100th Anniversary of Colorado Military Aviation history with the Air Force and ANG. 2 F-16s 1 F-35 and a P51.

I thought this was a joke. That’s pretty clearly a P-51 heritage flight. Awesome nonetheless

Are you anywhere near McEntire ANG? They have a 51 with them rn

The intercept I saw over my house like a week after 9/11 was something. 3 F-16s and they were really bullying the guy. Actually forced him down in a field if I remember correctly. It was wild. I can't find a news article about it, but it was over southern York county, pa. That pilot fucked up and was probably shitting his pants.

Interesting interview of one of the F-16 pilots out of Buckley flying air cover over the area on 9/11, protecting Cheyenne Mtn, and almost shooting down pilot flying into Rocky Mountain Regional up near Denver. https://youtu.be/SHQMa2jt9Bc

It's amazing that even with the extreme noise of three fighter jets, the sweet unmistakable sound of the Merlin just stands right out.

Could be an oopsie airspace intrusion or it could be Civil Air Patrol being the "practice target" for doing interception training with the F-16 squadron.
View on Reddit #1613947

Zestyclose_Tell_9912@reddit

That's not an intercept. That's a formation flight.
