Whole Home Generator Worth It?

I have an 11kW whole house generator. I think there's a lot of benefits. It self tests every week by starting up and running for 10 minutes. No need for me to drag it out, start it every month just to make sure everything is lubricated and the fuel is good. I know me, I would never do this on my own. I've got a lot of other things to do. It also automatically switches over, which is really nice when it's 10F out, in a snowstorm, at 10 pm, with blustery wind. This actually happened. Even better since it is one less thing for the old ball and chain to worry about if I'm away. How to drag it out, how to hook it up, how to start it correctly, this is all taken care of automatically. At 11kW, we needed load shedding modules since we have an electric dryer, electric range, central air, and EV. But the point is, the entire house is powered, no worrying about what circuits work and what don't. You need power, you have it. Plug in that game system, any outlet is fine. All the lights just work, turn them on! Run that cotton candy machine you got on eBay during the biggest blackout in the state's history. BECAUSE YOU CAN.... Sorry I went off the rails a bit there. The biggest drawback is initial cost. It was pretty expensive. As you note. Now for natural gas, I do have some opinions. It isn't a given the gas will flow. During the Texas freeze, part of the problem with the electrical service was the adequate flow of natural gas to the power plants. (Normal grids and gas service have some built in resiliency for this and can handle the cold. Not Texas.) But it is an example of a loss of electricity and gas service simultaneously but not universally. Another example was in New England during the gas explosions. Long story short, utility over pressurized the lines, there were a bunch of house fires and explosions, they cut the power to prevent more. Another instance of gas and electricity being out simultaneously. These are extreme examples. 99.99999% of the time, you'll be fine. My grandmother in NJ during a severe ice storm was saved by a generator with natural gas service. 8 days of no electricity and she was warm and comfortable the whole time. Me? I have propane, but that's because there's no gas service to my home. I like having the energy on site, but getting it refilled during an emergency could be a problem. Hasn't been yet.
