Whats the context? Is this some kind of protest?

No protest, just free concrete to steal and use it to reinforce the house that they built using cheap materials. The region where this road was going to be built is extremely poverty/illiteracy/criminal stuck so there's no cure for this.

That's not the issue we were going for, it's that the idea that "you can't fix poverty" is simply not true, people and communities can change with effort. And also there's a lot examples in which a community in poverty has moved forward through communal effort, even from zero.

It's likely that these folks are harvesting the freshly poured cement in the hopes of putting down a hard surface in their homes. There's a good chance they're in extreme poverty and have dirt floors which turn to mud when it rains, and so the prospect of unguarded cement is enticing to perhaps improve their living situation a bit. What good is a cement road in your village if you're sleeping in mud, you know? But of course /r/greentext is simply a bait-ground for the kind of comments you see here instead.

I will never forget in a college class, after watching a documentary on poverty in India that featured a family of 5 living in an apartment literally the size of a closet (the mother slept on top of the father and that barely gave the three kids room to sleep next to each other and also had to use that space as a kitchen/dining room/living room, with the bathroom being a communal drain behind the building that was used for shitting, pissing, and showering), one guy made a comment that he felt a connection to then because his dorm room wasn’t much bigger.
View on Reddit #17812977

Why does everyone call it antisemitism? Thats like saying everyone who supports Israel is anti-muslim (idk what the word is - if it exists). Clearly theres a difference between supporting Palestine and hating jewish people and vice versa
View on Reddit #17810350

AnonymousUser1992@reddit

Best part is, the palestinians are the semites. The israelis are mostly ethnically khazaks so hating them might be anti jewish but not anti semetic.
View on Reddit #17811773

non_depressed_teen@reddit

But that's specifically what antisemitic is
View on Reddit #17830628

AnonymousUser1992@reddit

Partially correct. It is prejudice against ethnic individuals from the Semitic regions: North Africa and Southwest Asia, not just Jews. More recently; because of a certain funny moustache man, it is used to only refer to ethnic Jews, however Arabs, Assyrian, etc are all ethnically Semitic, and speak Semitic languages. The current Israelis, whilst speaking a Semitic language, are not ethnically Jewish, nor are they ethnically Semitic. The current Israelis have more in common, historically, with the golden horde of Genghis Khan, than the golden throne of Yahweh.
View on Reddit #17840891

non_depressed_teen@reddit

Partially correct. According to a quick google search (very good source), it just means prejudice against jews in general. I reckon everything else you said checks out though.
View on Reddit #17855783

BojcJugovic@reddit

OR... This word is supposed to mean something. As is with most things and opinions, not all Palestine supporters are completely sane, like you and most others. I think there's a difference between those who are concerned about civilian casualties and for example the people involved in an incident where protesters chanted "gas the jews". In no way did I mean the entire cause is antisemitic because it obviously isn't, but there is antisemitism involved in some more radical circles and this movement has allowed those to express their hatred for jews more freely, without fear of persecution.

Considering a key hallmark of a fascist government is a lack of rights and outright oppression of the LGBTQ community, there a massive checkbox Israel doesn't meet but almost every other middle eastern country does. To say nothing about free elections, free press, *womens* rights just to name a few.
View on Reddit #17821183

Lurker_number_one@reddit

It's not anti jewish, it is anti israel. Conflating these two is VERY anti semitic. What you are saying is basically "all jews support genocide and imperialism" when this is far from the truth and some of palestines most important allies are jews in organisations such as "jews for peace". Now as for fascism: this might suprise you (it really shouldn't) but israel literally have completely different rules and treatments for its arab population. This means that it doesn't have free elections, only womens right for some and like you said lack of rights for an "other" (in this case arabs, but also actually jews from ethiopia) so even by your own definition of fascism, israel is fascist. You are severely misinformed, im sorry it took me this long to respond.

View on Reddit #17826104

Firecracker048@reddit

Thata very easy and I did in another reply. But we can start with LGBTQ rights and go from there. Palestinians have none, on fact it's illegal. But lets go to elections. Does either side of Palestine have any? Nah they just brutally repress those who speak put against them. Do they have any kind of free press? Nope, sure don't. Most of all, they are anti Semitic who don't even believe the holocaust happened. Key tenants of facist government is a lack of elections, lack of free press and brutal repression of LGBTQ. Israel checks none of those boxes. In fact, arabs serve not only in elected position but appointed ones. How many of those boxes does Palestine check? Do rhey have any jews, or even any one who's religion isn't Islam in positions of authority?
View on Reddit #17826663

owaisted@reddit

You dumb son of a gun. You don't even know what fascism is. Let me share the literal definition so you can cry in the corner of the room. Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/ FASH-iz-əm) is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement,[1][2][3] characterized by a centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy. I hope this would have triggered the three brain cells you have. So, put them to use and comment which state is which. There is no argument to be had. You can claim about LGBT rights and that's a different discussion. The claim about Christians not having representation is absolute rubbish. Do a Google search and come back. Also Google why the fudge the Palestinians can't have elections.
View on Reddit #17827122

You literally just described the authority in Gaza and West Bank. There is no autocratic government in Israel. Same with natural hierarchy. Israel society doesn't have a natural hierarchy. Palestinian authorities do. Women hold no power. Lgbtq have 0 rights and are outright illegal. The definition you shared is both Gaza and West Bank to a T, not Israel. Israel doesnt suppress internal opposition. You should watch this video on facsim too, it would really help you realize how wrong your argument is. https://youtu.be/iR4CLtUHD6g?si=A3l4jTw-cKbIbvKR
View on Reddit #17827926

owaisted@reddit

I just saw your post history? How can i be so stupid? Debating a fanatic. Thats not in my realm. Stick to your guns. Because even when you can read the definition of something, you cannot understand it. The best part of your argument was taking the definition and forgetting the "forcible suppression" part. And more wonderful was "belief in a natural social hierarchy" I wonder what that applies to in a 73 year occupation. But no. "Israel doesnt suppress internal opposition" as that was not the case recently in their own elections an in Palestine.

Also, India is a developing country belonging to the Lower Middle-Income group. Safe to assume a genius like you would already know that developing countries have challenges that developed countries don't, such as rapid and unregulated economic expansion, and as a result, their pollution problems are worse. It's actually just 2 kids per family which is still high compared to the average US family which is just 1.6. It's just that 3 different ethnic groups thousand years ago settled there and never left so the population kept on growing in that area causing multiple empires and kingdoms until the British came and combined it to like 3-5 countries with India as the biggest.

View on Reddit #17862067

SpectaSilver991@reddit

You're right. India dropping below the replacement level happened only recently. But to see the effect will take decades as with China. This phenomenon has started for India. Their replacement level will only fall further to lead to population decline in the long term. Regarding your point about quality of life, the greentext image isn't the norm at all. It's happening in Bihar, the poorest state in India. The problem with India, is that there is a huge wealth gap between its people. Far more extreme than anything you see in the West. Extremely rich people, a middle class and the extremely poor. Perhaps Mumbai is the best example of that. If you focus on the city itself, it's a modern city, with good infrastructure, its own metro, with people living your usual day to day and so on. But it is also where the largest slum in the world is located.

Relevant-Oil-5175@reddit

In systems that don't have good workers rights children are an economic advantage not a burden. It used to be like this in the west too, have more kids cause kids can work in the mines and they bring in more than they cost. At the same time groom them with a culture of filial duty so you can sponge of them as an elderly relative or even sooner if your kid somehow becomes rich.
View on Reddit #17817463

Firedamp_Weaponry@reddit

Yeah I didn't think of that, in a system where the lack of restrictions allows children to be a revenue stream as opposed to an expenditure it makes sense to have more, but still, I'd think at some point they'd think "this hut of ours is getting real cramped for all 13 of us, maybe before investing in a 12th little worker we should save some of the money our lovely children bring to the house and move somewhere with an actual floor".
View on Reddit #17861388

Philush@reddit

Before modern medicine, having as many children as possible was a necessity as it would almost be guaranteed that many of them would die. This all began changing around 150 years ago with the rapid development of modern medical practices. It took societies a long time to adjust to these advancements culturally, with family planning only really becoming a thing in the 1960s. It took even longer for it to reach mainstream acceptance in the Western world. As societies get richer, the tendency is for the birth rate to drop. In fact, this is such a well documented phenomenon that there's a very famous concept called the "Demographic Transition Chart", which shows how birth rates drop the richer a country becomes due to increases in education and availability of family planning techniques. Or of course you could just use 4chan's favorite "hurr durr poor people are stupid"
View on Reddit #17806071

Firedamp_Weaponry@reddit

Well looking at population growth in India I'd say they're okay, so maybe it's time to start cutting down on children and investing in hardwood flooring and a sewage system instead.

View on Reddit #17810191

Firedamp_Weaponry@reddit

"Genocide" is bit of a reach, AFAIK they weren't murdering "surplus" children (but correct me if I'm wrong, it wouldn't surprise me with the Chinese) but it was still wrong, it needs to be a social change, not the government restricting a natural part of the human process. Then again, India seems so far gone it may just be a necessary evil for the government to step in at this point (but considering India's biggest advantage is sheer manpower, that ain't happening).

View on Reddit #17810843

ayush307@reddit

man you asking actually kinda fueled me. Would be a bit high effort so its cool if you dont wanna go through all of it. Anyway the main point of theory is that as a result of colonialism in not just India, but globally people tend to think that white equates to beauty. ['White is better'](https://www.shs-conferences.org/articles/shsconf/pdf/2017/01/shsconf_icome2017_00048.pdf) Is often a trend that these countries have. I think its highlighted a lot more in India is because there are simply a lot more of us spread out around the globe and also the wide range of colour from north to south propagates in further. On why this is seen more prominently for women, i think its simply cause of perception that they are an easier target. Globally sexism is a massive issue and India is not an exception to it but then again is mostly just a theory. I was able to find a good account, though on the more optimistic side of this which for some reason I cant link in the text. [https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2013/09/09/india-and-a-blonde-tourist-an-alternate-account/](https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2013/09/09/india-and-a-blonde-tourist-an-alternate-account/) I get that it doesnt really answer the question but it was quick research and this was the best I could find. View on Reddit #17808980

xRamenator@reddit

its apparently more offensive to imply the sacred river Ganges could ever be anything but "pure and clean", than it is to literally dump corpses, sewage and industrial waste into the river. Corporations take advantage of this and make sure religious leaders have a lot of say over [lack of] regulations regarding waste disposal in the river.
View on Reddit #17844813

JHT230@reddit

You can dump anything in it *because* it's pure and clean, and anything dumped in it will be washed away. Trouble is that's there's some truth to it, stuff will get washed out to sea, so people keep putting everything in the river without a single thought.
View on Reddit #17850157

KatsumotoKurier@reddit

Not commonly, but it is known to happen, largely for religious reasons because of the sacred importance of the Ganges. You can find pictures of it online — not that I recommend it.

I watched James May Our Man in India this weekend. Quite alright, but the Japan-one was way better and interesting. Italian one was also very nice. One thing that stood out with me was one of his local guides, a stand up comedian. She talked proudly about India and such (normal stuff for a local guide AFAIK) and then said “We have been on the verge of being a sooperpowah for 30 years now”. And that is something to be proud of? *Almost becoming* a superpower for three decades and never breaking that hurdle? Bruh… While China being the land of shortcuts and facades at least they have become a global player and bully “lesser nations” (just like a sooperpowah would do amirite?) so they have at least some valid claims to it. India just seems salty about being colonised by England and can’t really let it go. Whenever they get a chance to speak internationally “Western world owes us 1 trillion!!!!!”. May’s show did show me a side of India I wasn’t aware of, so if you like May fukin watch it because he is a good host.

It was the center line. It was like twenty feet long. The asphalt came away with it so me and my friend took it. Had to weigh like 100 pounds. We would use it to mark our sides of the living room, or as a 'penalty box' during parties when someone started acting up.
