I had the same problem with my Cascadia as a brand new driver. I brought it to a shop to get looked at and the explanation I got was that the release mechanism is a flawed design. Something about the cylinder getting filled with debris every time the pin moves in and out. Eventually it gets filled to the point that it can't move freely anymore. If you hook and drop 2-3 trailers a day, it needs to get replaced every few years. At least that is what I was told.

Tip I learned years ago for a sticky 5th wheel: you know that water fuel separator? The one you drain once a week into a empty bottle? Keep that bottle of diesel. Dump it into the jaws/latch assembly/crotch of the 5th wheel next time you drop a trailer. When it gets really cold and grease gets gummy, it really, really helps keep the 5th wheel working properly. Idk how many times I've had partial latches, or pulled the lever only to have it slide closed by the time I get back in the truck in extreme cold. A little diesel in the crotch and jaws will help.

Make sure the trailer brakes are locked. Then Back Up an inch. You might have pressure on the lock.

I did that and still nothing. What’s crazy is I drove to my OC and said “fuck it let me try one more time” and it fucking worked. Now I gotta drive an hour back to my pick up location. I ended up hitting the pin on the opposite side with a hammer and it worked like someone above mentioned. I’m assuming it was just frozen because of the area I was driving through

This usually fixes it for me. If there's a little bit of tension on the pin you can't release it. By locking the trailer brakes and reversing up against the trailer, you take the tension off the in.

With the subby stick engaged reverse back slightly to remove any tension on the jaws/pin. Also don’t lower the legs all the way to the ground until you have pulled the handle, lower them until they are about an inch off the ground then pull the turntable handle

Definitely has tension on it. I had this exact issue. With the brakes released I backed up a foot or so and then lowered the legs.

Lower landing gear then drop the air bags then try. Also, you can see a small metal plate that gets moved when you pull the handle I use my handle puller hook tool and go under the 5thbwheel and pull that little piece of metal the same time I'm pulling the handle out.

Maybe raise the landing gear a little bit higher. Go forward and backwards.

That's a good idea to reverse it, like you said. But sometimes, there is a "sweet spot" that is right in the middle. No tension on the back, and none on the front. Try to find that gentle spot in the center. Also make sure the landing gear is not too high or too low.

So it's a release button inside the cab? Hope you got a 5th wheel pin puller. I've been able to release it, but I was pulling all my weight as hard as I could and took several attempts.
