Will Ryanair allow a handbag as well as their one small carry on bag?

I partner fooled European flights with Ryanair. I am unclear of the booking details and bag allowance. He says all I am allowed is one carryon of 10kg. I am unsure if he booked priority booking. I don't think he booked priority. I think he booked a basic allowance.
I usually move about with a handbag. My clothes don't have pockets. I need a handbag. I don't want to pay more for such a small item but also I don't want to be caught out at the gate and charged extra.
Would I be allowed a small handbag as well as the one small bag under the seat policy?
I am unsure if my backpack will have enough space for a handbag as well.
Tainted-Archer@reddit
Ryanair’s rules a very clear. You get 1 personal bag for free. That can be a laptop bag, a handbag or backpack and nothing else.
If you paid for the extra 10kg bag (you do not necessarily need priority for that) you can bring both onboard.
Damn-Sky@reddit
is a satchel considered a personal bag?
Tainted-Archer@reddit
Absolutely
Damn-Sky@reddit
just read a comment saying he always wear a fanny bag and a personal item with no problem.
so can I carry a fanny bag and also a personal item?
Tainted-Archer@reddit
Just because some people get away with it doesn’t mean they won’t 😞. The rules say 1 personal item, I’ve seen them charge people for a tiny handbag with a strap.
Feel free to risk it but paying a 50 quid charge for a small satchel IMO just isn’t worth it for me.
Damn-Sky@reddit
hmm just put the satchel in the personal bag?
Does not make a sense though...I can just put the satchel under by shirt or jacket...doesn't some jackets have huge pockets?
Tainted-Archer@reddit
Yeah you could do either, I take a satchel and just leave it at the bottom of my bag flat
DirtyPrancing65@reddit
Yep, they lined us up and had us all put our bags in a bin thing. Anyone who didn't fit, they were swiping cards for $20 right then and there.
Put on as much of you clothes as you can, use all your pockets, and get as small as possible. Then you can unpack in the plan because the actual underseat is twice as big as the test bin. It's a total scam
DanzakFromEurope@reddit
BTW The ones who had to pay, did they have to get their baggage tossed to other checked bags or could they take it on the plane with them?
Slimey_700@reddit
It''s not a total scam. Not to be a bootlicker, but that's their business model. You are aware of luggage limitations when you buy a 10 euro flight, people just aren't aware.
ddarrko@reddit
I've flown a lot and never had to pay for extra baggage. That includes RyanAir/EasyJet and almost all of the low cost carriers in the eu and Asia. I take my 40L backpack for short trips and for longer I take my 40L and my 15L day bag. I always check in online, board towards the end and wear my backpacks on my back kind of facing away from check in. I have done this since around 2016 and probably flown 100+ times. It is greatly exaggerated the times they care and your chances of being caught and even if I do now I am fairly happy to pay the fine vs the cost savings of getting away with it. I am typing this sat in Beijing airport having taken 10 flights in the last month with Cebu Pacific/air Asia and Philippine airlines with the bag combo mentioned above and not having been asked to check bags once.
ddarrko@reddit
Downvoted for the truth. Weird. Not that Internet points matter but I genuinely hope someone reading this realizes and saves money on paying for unnecessary baggage costs.
AngryChickenPlucker@reddit
The free bag must go under the seat and not in the overhead locker. I bought a 20L bag for a weekend away and it fitted but my legs were not comfortable but it saved some cash.
Jumpy_Possibility_70@reddit
Is it a recent Ryan Air thing that the free bag MUST go under the seat? It's not a thing in any of the airlines I've flown, including Ryan Air a few years back. Any carry-on bags (paid or free) can go in the overhead cabins.
DjayRX@reddit
It is a MUST. But, because now they only offer 2 cabin bags as priority (no more only buying extra cabin bags), all people with a large cabin will put them first. You can put your small bag up there if there's still an empty space.
Of course, you MUST put them down if some priority guy is late and your small bag was taken out by the steward.
Tainted-Archer@reddit
It’s been that way for years. I live in Europe and use them almost bimonthly
AngryChickenPlucker@reddit
It was the rule when I flew in September.
futureocean@reddit
Just to give me experience, 2 bags is a no go. However, one bag which is bigger than the size allowed goes unnoticed every time for me, flying out of the UK. I've done that for the last 5 flights no issues. Maybe I got lucky!
Tainted-Archer@reddit
You did, twice I’ve been in the queue and the person in front with a slightly bigger bag than me has been pulled aside and fined. You have just gotten lucky so far
f33nan@reddit
I’ve gotten away with it 8 out of 9 flights in the past 18 months and was charged €48 so has been worth it for me to risk it.
Aggressive-Song-3264@reddit
Yup, if ryan though is anything like spirit (which I am betting they are basically the same) and you need 2 carry on bags buy it now. They probably scale up the prices the closer it gets with the most being at the gate.
africanthistle@reddit
Under your coat if you’re travelling in winter. Or you’re also allowed duty free as an additional bag along with your hand baggage so buy something small, ask for a large bag and put any additional items in there.
raeflood@reddit
I did this once! I bought a very touristy looking duffel bag in the city and put extra bits in it that wouldn't fit in my backpack. Just to be safe I bought something in duty free to put it in, but they never asked about it. So I had a backpack, my string bag (that looked like something I bought in the airport) and a duty free bag. No problems :D
PeeInMyArse@reddit
Have you ever actually done this lol
they check receipts
Orphyr@reddit
During my time of flying quite a fair few times theyve NEVER checked the receipts.
PeeInMyArse@reddit
if you’re on a shitty LCC and they weigh your bags they ask
i think when i wrote that i had just flown a jetstar flight
africanthistle@reddit
Haha, oh no, do they?! They haven’t tried with me before, but I haven’t been travelling very often recently. Coming back from Denmark and Italy last year was no issue, or maybe depends on the airport staff (the danish and Scottish staff were lovely!)
AverageWarm6662@reddit
Never happened for me
They aren’t gonna check everyone
Maybe if you bring on tonnes of bags from duty free or massive bags full of shit so it is obvious
Affectionate_Egg6105@reddit
Adding on to this old thread to say I just got caught along with half the plane. Coming back from Cyprus to Vienna they were extremely strict, to the point where it looked like the attendant wasn’t even measuring properly and just pretending to do so. So your mileage may vary depending. I was using a half filled jansport cool student (43.5 x 31 x 20.5 cm) and still got charged 70 euro.
Wanderland77@reddit
Depends how big the handbag is. I never add extra baggage and I take my duffle bag (carry on luggage size) as a personal item and then I take my small handbag as well. No one has ever said anything and I've done this for tonnes of flights. I think if you don't draw attention to it, no one will notice
Kyl_21@reddit
Put your handbag into a world duty free bag by purchasing a bottle of water. Problem solved. They allow one personal item as well as items purchased at duty free
Temporary_Draw_4708@reddit
Maybe you should ask your partner what he booked
AJA_15@reddit
I always fly Ryanair with a backpack and my small fanny pack which has never been a problem. But it is also super small, can fit under my jacket, and never leaves my body on the whole trip.
_IcedDiamonds@reddit
Does it come off through security?
Angeluxaf@reddit
The thing about Ryanair is that they can be really garbage depending on the people working that day. Went Denmark - London and they said nothing about my dad’s bag being too big for the 1 ‘personal bag’ allowed. When we went back from London - Denmark they stopped us and asked if we had payed extra for his bag, we said no and explained that it was perfectly fine for the people working in Denmark and pointed out that it would fit under the seat and they still made him pay a huge extra fee on the spot. They didn’t complain about me having a smaller handbag AND my travelbag either without the add-on to the ticket… their rules are really off depending completely on who you get tbh.
DjayRX@reddit
You're really complaining that you were not fined more?
Angeluxaf@reddit
Not sure where you think I wrote ‘god, I can’t believe they didn’t fine us more! How rude! Let me pay more for a bag than for the actual flight!’
What I meant was they pick and choose when they want to follow their own policies regarding the carry-on bags, it wasn’t a complaint as much as a ‘they fined this but didn’t fine this’ since OP was asking about the bag situation.
rockdog85@reddit
Prio booking gives a hand bag + 10kg, normal booking just allowed 10kg. You'll have to put your handbag in the 10kg checks for boarding/ checks, but you can take it out of the 10kg wherever else..
DjayRX@reddit
Wrong, prio gives a under the seat bag + 10 kg overhead cabin.
Normal booking just allowed the under the seat bag.
Intelligent_Toe9479@reddit
They can be strict. I take a handbag and a backpack but make sure I can put my handbag in my backpack. Sometimes they check and sometimes they don’t - it’s really about 50/50 though.
AverageWarm6662@reddit
Buy something from the shops in the airport and then put your handbag in the bag
Bill_llib123@reddit
I’ve only done this with EasyJet and Wizz so take this with a grain of salt. But you should be able to buy a plastic bag from duty free (or actually buy u something if you want) and slip your handbag in that during boarding
Anecdotally, I believe you are allowed one shopping bag from within the airport in addition to your luggage allowance
vavavoo@reddit
You need to check the fine print. In Sweden, you all allowed an extra handbag/purse without extra charge. It used to be strictly 1 bag and all the women had to shove their purses down their bags and people were upset.
hotdog7423@reddit
Ryanair fucking sucks!
MassiveHistory9732@reddit
Who is Ryan?

Two of the co-founders had the surname Ryan;

Ask the airline.

Like check the fucking website.
Throwaway936292@reddit
You will be fine. You get one personal item (handbag) and your carry on. Source: I travel regularly with my wife who brings too bags! No need for priority boarding, everyone gets there at the same time!
Bitter_Initiative_77@reddit
Not on RyanAir
bedpeace@reddit
Or any other budget airline, like WizzAir.

Technically, you will have to pay. You're only allowed one item, regardless of whether it's a backpack or a tiny tote bag - one item. They don't always enforce this or check, but if they do (which they often do, because they make their $ on add-ons and extra charges) you will have to pay quite a bit at the gate.
Leave extra room in your backpack to put your handbag in. I normally use a small totebag that I slide into the top of my backpack. Tie a sweater around your waist or something, to make extra room. You are more than able to figure it out, and if you absolutely need the extra item, you may have to pay (it can be more than 2x the cost online, at the gate).
Mmystic480@reddit
No, just a carried a regular small backpack, that’s why there cheap they make there money up selling everything. You have to buy water they didn’t even give a glass of water.
mindfullybankrupt@reddit
goodness, i read “handgun” and was so confused 😭
imob10@reddit
Ryanair can be dicks. Shove it in your knickers and they’ll never know.
AnotherDullUsername@reddit
They lose money with the flights and only make it back with luggage, food, seat, insurance, etc
You can call that being a dick. Its just a different business model
DesperateAlfalfa1706@reddit
I fly two-four times every month for like 2 years now. Only problems I had was with Wizz air, Ryan air is much more chill, and the priority is fairly cheap so try it for comfort maybe idk (20 EUR one way I think)
laz1b01@reddit
All flights that you purchase, whether it be RyanAir or Emirates, will always include one personal item. A personal item is basically a woman's purse. It can go under the seat in the foot compartment. The size of the personal item may vary from different airlines, but everyone gets one.
A carryon bag is what goes on top of the overhead. It used to come free, but now budget airlines (such as RyanAir) are charging them. So if you don't know, get the confirmation number from your partner and look it up online. It should tell you whether you have a carryon or not. Given your partner said you have one, he either bought it or mistook/misunderstood.
So to answer your question, yes you have one personal item (which is the size of a big purse or a small backpack).
GabeLorca@reddit
You need to read the small print. If it’s not included you’ll have to pay.
Also don’t forget to check in online, it will get very expensive otherwise. And the online checkin closes a few hours before the flight (but is open for a whole week before departure).
HestusDarkFantasy@reddit
I don't think that last bit's true - last time I flew with Ryanair check-in opened 24 hours before departure (and closed two hours before the flight, as you wrote).
GabeLorca@reddit
We had priority so that’s probably why. I rarely fly with them but I won’t turn down a 7,50 euro fare incl seat when the competition wants 450.
irishlad162@reddit
I believe it is a week before if you choose priority, 24 hours if you are going basic random seat allocation
HestusDarkFantasy@reddit
Oh my bad, I think you're right!
Terrible_Pea7007@reddit
Bad service and expensive ticket
Fixuplookshark@reddit
I've always been relatively lucky when stretching the rules of baggage. But of course it can go wrong
moonshadowfax@reddit
Wear a backpack and carry your handbag. When it’s time to board, put your handbag in your backpack.
qt4u2nv@reddit
Just hide the small handbag, unless you wanna pay extra
Impossible_Basil1040@reddit
I have seen it several times, open and overed by a jacket or even the small bag itself. I would do it, of the purse fits in the small bag and together in the box at the gate.
Hugsandkindess@reddit
You will have to pay for anything past one item. They actively check to make sure. Don’t risk it.
joannaradok@reddit
I would definitely check the booking which will make things clear. The basic allowance on Ryanair is a small bag that goes under seat in front, not gauged by weight. If you’ve got the additional 10kg hand baggage allowance then you’ll still be allowed a handbag (or any small bag) as well.
Projektdb@reddit
If you didn't book priority, you get a single personal item. If you take your hand bag, you can't take any other bags.
I almost always travel with a sling bag to carry around once I get to where I'm going. I just leave enough room in my personal item and pack it in there when it comes time to board the plane.
BubbleTluv@reddit
If you are wearing a sweater or jacket put it under there
Renovatio_@reddit
You'll have to pay.
