Yeah but they get to drive the Weinermobile around and be a hero. They probably get free hot dogs! 🌭🌭!

That's literally not even minimum wage in some cities, but there are a lot of people who really want to drive the wiener mobile and not a lot of wiener mobiles to go around.

I don’t think that’s minimum wage anywhere

Federal minimum wage is like $15k/year for 40 hours per week. It hasn't been increased in like 15 years.
View on Reddit #17572258

TheR1ckster@reddit

Yeah all these people are kind of overstating min wage. A large amount are still at federal which is $7.25... That's about $17,000. Even Washington with the highest min wage is $33,000.
View on Reddit #17584914

AfraidOfAtttention@reddit

Washington (Seattle) is 19.95 this year for companies with over 500 full time employees
View on Reddit #17681338

the_lamou@reddit

>A large amount are still at federal which is $7.25... Not really, though. As of last year, fewer than 100,000 people in the US earned the federal minimum wage. The median individual income is about $19/hr. So at least half the population earns more than that, and most of the other half earns over minimum wage. The number of people in the US that would actually be impacted by a federal minimum wage hike would be tiny, unless the minimum wage hike was huge, which (let's face it) isn't likely to happen any time soon.
View on Reddit #17602195

TheR1ckster@reddit

Well we were debating what min wage was, not how many people actually make min wage.
View on Reddit #17602239

the_lamou@reddit

The part I responded to and quoted was explicitly about how many people actually making minimum wage.
View on Reddit #17602610

Regardless, though, this is still a ridiculously low salary when they expect a candidate with a bachelor's degree

Oh for sure, I'm arguing it's worse than what people are saying.

Thirsty_Comment88@reddit

That's what congress should be making if they think anyone can live on that.
View on Reddit #17575794

Arc_Ulfr@reddit

On one hand, yes, they really need to be made to understand just how terrible incomes are for most people compared to expenses. On the other hand, that particular idea would just make it impossible for people who don't already have money to become members of Congress, and it would make essentially no difference to the income current members of Congress enjoy. The real issue isn't the fact that they make $175k or whatever, it's the fact that they do so much insider trading that their real incomes tend to be more like eight figures. Personally, I feel that members of Congress should be barred from trading completely, with the exception of putting their money into a blind trust. They should have no idea what stock they actually own, and they certainly should not have any input on that. All they should know is what value their stocks have.

Other benefits include a a weekly allowance of $150 (or $7,200 for the year) for meals and personal travel, 18 days of paid time off, a full health benefits package, and 100% of hotel expenses covered. Honestly, if you're traveling the whole year. This might not be that bad for a young single person, especially if they cover full health. I assume that's their target employee. $40k a year to pimp around in the wiener mobile, they cover all hotels? This would be a tempting offer if I was 23 and fresh out of college.
View on Reddit #17570945

phr3dly@reddit

View on Reddit #17572094

Imagine being so bad with money you can't figure out how to spend less than $150 a week on food for one person. You ever seen how much bananas cost? They're like 25 cents a piece.
View on Reddit #17594088

Gopokes34@reddit

This is also the $ the company is giving you for food. My job now, I pay for all my own food lol. So $150 for what the company pays for isn't that bad.
View on Reddit #17656476

WeeniePops@reddit

The job essentially covers rent, food, and healthcare, with an added bonus of 35k on top that. Rent and food are by far my two largest bills, and I don't even get healthcare from my current job. $30 a day ain't hard. It's not luxury eating, and probably requires some forethought, but not impossible by any means. Some people don't really care about what they eat, so eating the same bland thing wouldn't bother them at all.
View on Reddit #17573398

Swiss__Cheese@reddit

I think it would be more difficult than you think. The average combo meal from a fast food place is $10-15 nowadays.
View on Reddit #17576093

Based_or_Not_Based@reddit

If we're aiming at the *average* American, I would be more inclined to agree. Even you yourself immediately went to fast food. But if you take the time to plan it out, it's not hard in the least. You can cook some pretty solid meals in a hotel microwave. It's all about nonperishables, leftovers and not eating to excess. Hell if you Google "feeding for 150 a week" most of the articles are on feeding families for that much a week. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk
View on Reddit #17577610

FesteringNeonDistrac@reddit

Yeah I am around $200/week for my family of 4, but I could get down to $150 if I had to. For just me? Not even a challenge to be under $150.
View on Reddit #17581780

Killbot_Wants_Hug@reddit

Jesus, how do you do that? I give my wife $250 per week for groceries and I know she's spending other money on groceries too. And it's mostly just the two of us (we have a baby but she's just starting food). And that budget is just for the stuff she cooks at home. When we eat out that comes out of totally different money.
View on Reddit #17592436

Gopokes34@reddit

Dear goodness, it's just me and my wife too and we spend under $200 easily and that's with going to Kroger and Costco pretty regularly.

The reason I went to fast food was because I assumed it was a situation where you pay for it yourself first, and the company reimburses you for it after. In that situation, I've found that most companies only reimburse you for actual meals, and not groceries. If they're giving you a flat $150 a week, then I agree that you can get creative and stretch it quite a ways.
View on Reddit #17580585

Negrom@reddit

Could definitely ghetto meal prep in a healthy way for $30/day, especially so if you’re eating free hotel breakfast daily.
View on Reddit #17576488

RedeemedWeeb@reddit

A Weinermobile came to my local grocery store once. The guy set up outside and was letting people ask questions about it. If I'm remembering correctly, the Wienermobile has a bed inside. Whether they like to use that or prefer to use hotels I have no clue. Personally I'd choose the hotels (especially nice ones) since they're paid for, but I imagine if your job is driving around in such a vehicle it might start to feel like home after a while.

I bet there's an opportunity to get a couple of free hot dogs in there. Just guessing. Or crockpot in your hotel room overnight and pack it with you. Nothing fancy, but you can get by.

That's how my company used to do it. You were alloted $30/day because they included the free continental breakfast as one of your meals. So $15 per meal per day. If you like eating anything that's not fast food, you're fucked.
View on Reddit #17590894

MEatRHIT@reddit

Hell right now if you're eating fast food you're still pretty fucked at that rate. A chicken sandwich combo from Wendy's is like 11 bucks plus tax, you'd basically have to eat off the equivalent of the dollar menu at any fast food joint you went to.
View on Reddit #17597230

Ahhh that's what I get for reading too quickly, I thought it was 15/day not per meal which now that I think of it I should have known the math didn't add up. It was big news that they were phasing it out a while ago. It’s back?

In the town I live the wiener mobile was here and was pulled over just a few days ago. I wonder if this is related.

About 25 years ago, one of my college roommates was a finalist for this. It truly is an exhaustive weeding out process they have.

ITT: Whiners who think that $35k/year with free housing and food isn't enough money to drive around the USA handing out hot dogs.

Bruh, if you were 23 again it'd be 1984 and 35k would be alot of money. But it ain't now

If I was 23 it would be 2012 and I was making $460/week before taxes and paying $700 a month in rent. Lol.

Neckbeard redditors don't read the article, just see 35k and be like what this doesn't pay 100k+ with a free hooker every weekend and it requires a bachelors degree?? A bachelors degree doesn't mean shit anymore lol. I have a bachelors and still don't make anywhere close to this salary plus benefits.

35k plus food stipend and living expenses paid. I have a bachelors, don't make 30k, and also don't get free food and living expenses from my current job. This actually sounds like a great gig if you're fresh out of college and want to travel. You basically have your two biggest bills paid then get 35k on top of that. Y'all are not reading the article and making this out to be worse than it is.
View on Reddit #17594685

Its a bonus if you already have a degree and nowhere else to work. Im not going to go get a bachelors just to have a (probably fun and opportunity and fairly compensated) job that very obviously doesnt require one technically. I guarantee I could outperform any of the ones they hire this year.

While the salary is laughable, it's basically getting paid to road trip the country. How many people take a gap year after college to just travel, and they're not getting paid... I'd rather get paid and have everything covered. Assuming you can chuck all your stuff in your parents garage and not have rent, it's not as absurd as it first comes across when you see that comical salary
View on Reddit #17586749

Killbot_Wants_Hug@reddit

They take a gap year, but you won't be picking where you're going plus you're going to have to work. It's not really equatable.
