Taking a "large" dog to Europe from Canada (or USA)?

We used the Polish airline LOT to get from Toronto to Warsaw. It was a nightmare, though that wasn’t the fault of LOT. I will try to find my previous answer to someone else and paste it here; take what you need from it. I will never, ever do that again. The rules may be different in US/Denmark, but our trip from Canada to Poland was a nightmare to figure out. I’ll try to make it short- we had to have microchips implanted- no problem. But what we didn’t know is that no vaccines are valid unless the chip was already in- meaning we needed to do a last minute (early dose) re-vaccination of rabies. Fine. We got the rabies tags and certificates but the certificates were missing a “batch number”. Nobody had any idea where this could be or how to find it. Eventually, through my OWN research, I managed to find the batch numbers. Moving on. We needed a vet certified check up 48 hours before our flight, AND an additional sign off from a “local” CFIA office. Our flight was on a Monday. We had a 24 hour cross country road trip before our flight, to avoid an extra flight for our dogs and additional paperwork/chances for things to go wrong. Needed the vet cert done on Saturday to follow the 48 hour rule. CFIA offices are not open on weekends- but we needed to be on the road already to make it for our flight from Toronto. We make an appointment at the Toronto CFIA office and pray to the heavens that our 24 he drive will go off without a hitch and we make it on time for the office to sign off on our vet certs. Mind you, if we don’t make it… the dogs don’t fly and we would be stranded in Toronto with 2 dogs and a flight out of country in 4 hours. And don’t even get me started on the airline rules- nobody has a damn clue what is and isn’t approved by the airline. You can call the airline hotline 8 times and get 8 different answers. First we were told we have to take separate flights because only 1 dog per flight in cargo. Then it can be two dogs on same flight. Then the cage can’t be this big, then the dog plus cage weigh too much, then the weight is fine, then they don’t know if sedatives are allowed- but my vet is saying to use them… etc, you get the point. Once we get to the airport (after thankfully having the certs signed off at the CFIA- which be extra careful with that paperwork because you need to use certain pen colours and stamps and shit and vets don’t all know this), the lady processing our dogs is talking to me for what feels like forever as our PLANE IS BOARDING- I ask her to please call someone to get going because we are taking off soon- she says don’t worry blah blah, well, we made it by a couple minutes and only because I rushed her and MADE her call again- turns out they forgot about us and the dogs. My god. Then on the plane I ask the people to please lord Jesus check if the dogs are there- they come back with some weird answer that wasn’t 100%, so I ask another two times and RIGHT before takeoff they finally let us know the dogs are on. Fast forward 12 hours and we can retrieve them in the airport… there are absolutely no carts or trolleys big enough for our dog kennels and nobody is willing to help. We have 4 suitcases and 2 massive kennels and it’s so hard to get out of the airport. The dogs finally got to pee on a tiny slit of grass somewhere outside, no accidents on the flight thank god, and they’ve been angels since. Ok, that wasn’t short- and there are so many things I didn’t mention- like the fact that my vet didn’t forward paperwork and I had to hunt it down, that the other vet didn’t know how to fill in any paperwork and I had to do it and they just signatured it, how I had to be on hold with multiple people 8 HOURS IN A WEEK to clarify all of this BS, and STILL there are many things that could have gone wrong. Quadruple check everything, and don’t trust anyone to do their jobs- you’ll have to do the jobs for them, because this process truly taught me how incompetent 95% of people are. Good luck.
