For those who have been off the whole Xmas period, how do you spend your last day off?

I quite like my job, but I'm 51 and getting to the stage where I just don't want to work any more. I would much rather just bum around the house with the family, just doing what I want, when I want. I've got another 15 or 16 years more working though, so bar a lottery win, I'm just going to have to get on with it. Life, eh?!

I'm the same age but what's the alternative? Sit on the dole? Work is hard, it always has been. They probably could make it easier for us all but they won't, so there's no use fretting. Just try and fill your remaining time not at work with things you enjoy.

Feels like as the generations have gone from one to the next, the slap of existential dread from capitalism is hitting harder and much earlier in life.

Gawd, I'm a couple of years older, been in factory work for the past 18 years. I hate going to work nowadays. I get slight relief when something breaks down, they start asking people if they want an early night, can never say no, although it means less wage the following week. But Mum left me some inheritance when she passed away Christmas 2022 and I'm very tempted to quit and travel the world. Chances are when I'm 60+, I might not be fit enough to do that. Dreaming of course, I wouldn't be brave enough to do that Oh well, back to work tonight!

I've had 14 MONTHS OFF (maternity leave). Tomorrow is a big day for us. I'm going back to work albeit for 2 days and our son is going to nursery. All in all, I'm excited. I like my job, nursery will benefit our child and it will be a property, definite routine.
View on Reddit #17041700

All the best. This was my wife and I 3 months ago. Our 11 months, (at the time) would cry when we handed her over to the nursery staffs. Now she happly reaches out to them and loves it. We've seen a big change in her development.

Thank you! I'm so glad to hear your daughter is getting on so well. My son cried during his settling in sessions, refused to eat or drink and didn't want to play. I hope he will adjust!
View on Reddit #17043917

Defiant-Table-9131@reddit

He will adjust pretty quickly. Mine was the same for his settling in sessions but within a couple of weeks of going properly he would hold his arms out to be taken. This morning I dropped him off after the Christmas break, expected a few tears but he held his arms out and cuddled into his key person with the biggest cuddle.
View on Reddit #17101339

llksg@reddit

Just sharing in case this feels right for other folks with little ones starting nursery soon - Our nursery has a different approach to settling in to short sessions which the rest of my NCT group seem to have been doing. Our Baby’s key worker came to our house for an hour the week before she started to play with baby at home. Then when baby started nursery she went straight in for a full day. Their ethos is that by meeting the key worker in their safe environment they will trust them more quickly and then by doing the full day they get to know the nursery routines wayyyy more quickly. First day she was happy to be handed to her leyworker and she cried when she watched us walk out of the door but didn’t cry for more than 4/5mins. She did cry when I picked her up at the end of the day for maybe the first 6/8 days but other than that she settled in SO fast and she absolutely loves it.

He will, they all do! Best you can do is a very quick drop off, makes it easier for the staff and the child. The longer you drag it out, the worse for all concerned

The 'back to work' dread is hitting me pretty hard today, like a post-holiday reality check! It's always a tough transition after the festive break. I spent my last day off savoring the last moments of relaxation – you know, some lazy Netflix binge-watching, indulging in leftover holiday treats, and maybe a bit of procrastination. It's like the calm before the storm.

it took me 6 months to get into the swing of things at my current job, honestly. you'll get there. of course my job _doesn't_ stop for holidays, at all. if i want time off at any point i gotta book that shit off. today's my first day off since boxing day hence why i'm not answering op's question. but yeah no you should be fine after some time. probably not even as long as i took lmao.

Nothing makes sense in a new work environment at first. I look after a variety of teams in different departments and countries. Ialways tell my new colleagues, three months - if you spend the first three months losing sleep, eating unhealthy, working too hard or late to prove a point, you'll just be tired, unproductive and anxious. It's a new place with new people who, at times, feel like they speak another language or abbreviations, you also are getting familiar with products, systems, targets, the organisation structure of who does what and, of course, asking for help is your friend l, not your enemy. Give it three months, and remember to breathe - it's just a job

I’m also in this boat. Tomorrow marks my 3 months since starting and I’ll be honest I’ve spent Christmas looking for a different job. I took this one out of necessity following unexpectedly being made redundant but within a week it was apparent it wasn’t for me. I’m using literally none of my skills or experience and I want out. I’m in a similar boat after starting my new job mid December. I don’t think I feel as strongly as you do, but I definitely resonate with the sentiment. I’m not looking forward to going back. But, as others have said, I’m going to give it 3 months before making a rash decision. Good luck!

View on Reddit #17042615

gogo__yubari@reddit

If it’s any help at all I’ve felt like this at every job I’ve had, it’s a huge adjustment and the unfamiliarity of everything is so jarring I left my previous job because it got taken over by new management and I was miserable for a year before I left. Still, when I started my current job I hated it and regretted leaving and seriously considered going back. I gave myself 6 months to see how I felt and told myself if I was still unhappy then I could look for a new job. By the time my 6 month deadline rolled around I’d forgotten all about it and now 3 years on I’m so happy there and can’t believe I ever considered leaving It might not be the right job for you, but it might also be a case of just needing to adjust and get used to it. The 6 month deadline I gave myself really helped me as it reminded me there was a way out and it didn’t have to be my job forever, and it took loads of self imposed pressure off myself Give yourself time, remember adjusting isn’t an immediate thing and that unfamiliarity can be really difficult to manage, but also your new job and workplace will become more familiar over time. If you’re still unhappy in 6 months, look for something else and move on

Whenever I start ruminating and worrying I now tell myself "does this accomplish anything or does it just make me feel like shit? Can I do something tangible to fix my problem right in this instant?" If the answer is no and that I'll just feel like shit, in about half the cases I end up calming down because it's no use to make yourself feel bad. I'm trying to go back with the mindset this year of "The company won't collapse if you make mistakes or don't understand something. If you leave they'll just replace you. If you need a day off, take one. You work so you can pay your bills and you're pretty good at your job so stop worrying about everything". We moved house three weeks ago and I really would love more time at home to potter around and sort bits out. I think it’s far less then the dread my family is feeling about having to pick up the slack when I’m back at work! Did a quick preview of my inbox. Loads of fun applications for a bursary project and only two mildly terrifying emails from someone up the chain. Today I cleaned my work from home desk and now I’m cooking all the bits for a fondu party for family & friends. Deep breathes, people. We can do this.

I've been off on parental leave since 1st December. I'm shattered, and supervising a pre-toddler can sometimes be eye wateringly boring so talking to adults other than my lovely partner will be a change of pace. He is starting nursery in a week and I need to earn money so I'm heading back to the grind. I'm not looking forward to it because I've been sick of my job for almost 2 years at this point, however my office is being stripped of asbestos so I've been moved to a fancy new office for a few months, I've got to set up my new desk and then I've also got a month of emails to pretend to care about. Then I'll probably do my weekly ritual of browsing hopelessly for a new job, finishing my application for some education for a career change, might print off some bullshit and look at it, go for a coffee with people I haven't seen for a month and then it will probably be Friday where I'll knock off early because no work will have been done anyway. I guess my back to work dread isn't properly going to happen until Sunday, luckily "blue Monday" isn't for another week after that... (Side note: blue Monday is a commercial term to make people depressed so they buy more holidays... Don't buy into the bullshit.)

I just hope my bosses don’t expect me to do last weeks work as well as current work and extras thrown on top of it. Pretty sure that the run in I managed to have with HR leading up to christmas break, is going to give the company an excuse to let me go since they've not managed to turn a profit last year and many people only got a quarter of their bonus. I also had really weird targets that I tried hard to hit but I could tell they made them unreasonably out of the scope of my job, to get me to dedicate time after hours to hit them. Really shitty, honestly. So tomorrow is the first day I'm looking for a new job and expecting to be on the phone to a lot of recruiters. I've got a little bit of seasonal work at a friend's company starting 2nd Jan (tomorrow) for a couple of weeks so I'll be OK this month. One things for sure, I will continue my normal routine of getting up extra early and doing an intense hiit/ weights session before work. It makes work 1000% better and reduces my anxiety and fatigue tenfold. Happy new year!

However my 2yr old has been lovely over the break and has been sleeping in until 7-7:30 every morning and I’ve gotten 8+hrs sleep for the first time in years so I am not looking forward to getting up at 6am again.

It's not that bad but I know the dread will come after the first week. I spent most of 2023 doing a caretaker position for someone on maternity leave and that position was just so relaxing and free of stress! My last day there was the 29th and now I am free (I took some time off) until the 18th. But then I am back to my high stress job with no flexible schedule and people calling me for 10 hours a day to bitch about stuff that's not my fault. Really planning on making it a priority to find a new position within the same company within the first six months. I love the company but the position isn't for me anymore.

Terrible. Not because I'm particularly bothered about work per se, but because every time I've taken more than a couple of days for the last year, I've found myself holed up with the most cronking cold within 48 hours of walking out of the office. Four times that happened last year. Four. Times. Christmas was no exception; I've barely been able to move since Boxing Day. Only now am I perking up. I've come to terms with the fact that I very, very likely have ADHD-I and it's cost me a few jobs over the last few years. Just before Christmas I got a disciplinary warning in my current role because of a few different mistakes, with the overarching theme being attention to detail. ADHD testing, diagnosis and medication can take forever in the UK and I need to start the process.. yesterday. The next 4 weeks are going to be manic and I'm trying to navigate this stress on the thinnest ice possible with what feels like a broken brain. Dread for tomorrow is an understatement.

Yeah you're right, that's exactly it. I'm going to speak to my boss about it first thing. Not that I should expect them to pick up the slack, but I'm going to explain why I've been pushing for my probation to be signed off (so I can access private healthcare through work for this). I'm an educational designer. I design everything for a private company that trains teachers. Everything from the books, to the gifts, to the online resources, to the adverts. We're research based, which I mention because it is what makes me confident that what we do actually is benefitting education, and that feels good. I'm a tiny cog in a business who is improving education. We know it works (we have research done by the teachers themselves) and teachers feel helped and supported and you will often have it said to you after courses. It's just a nice feeling. We rarely ever get bad feedback and when we do, we try to fix whatever the issue was. Also, working around intelligent people is amazing, I've been lucky enough to travel the world and also meet some amazing people who are experts in their field. It's just satisfying. And I love designing, it's amazing to find a solution to a problem that no one else has been able to find (at least within our company).

Limited dread for work. My work tasks for the new year are defined and predictable, so I know what I've got coming up and I'm okay with getting on with them. I'm desperate to get back because Mrs tmstms is pawing the ground. She hates sitting in the house practising the piano, and that is more or less the only thing she can do if there are no concerts (there are a few pupils also, generally from the uni, but that's random from year to year). I have more 'backroom stuff' to do than I can possibly ever get through, but Mrs tmstms is, by virtue of what she doesi.e. that it is completely isolated and solitary, not self-sufficient, so when she stops practising, she often needs entertaining, and the fact I obviously cannot easily (or at all) contact other people for work through the holiday period also increases the sense for her that everything is in limbo.
