>Rams are known for powerful engines with impressive speed and horsepower. The Ram 1500, featured on J.D. Power’s list of fastest pickup trucks, is particularly notable for its ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds.
And that's when I realized the person writing this article is an idiot
Yea there's been like 4 articles citing this 1 study and every time someone points out "Incidents per 1,000 drivers" is a stupid metric to use in stead of "Incidents per 1,000 miles driven" or whatever measurement
I dunno, both of them can be pretty skewed.
Cars just doing a lot of highway miles will naturally have less incidents per 1k miles, vs cars mostly bought for city driving.
I have a Nissan Sentra. I've been sideswiped by a Toyota Previa, had my rear glass broken and passenger side rear door dented by a random unhinged homeless dude, and have hit 3 deer in the 8 years I've owned it. I have insurance.
I've never reported to insurance because other than the rear glass none of the other damage was anything but cosmetic and I don't care about this car as long as it keeps running properly. And in the case of the glass, replacing it was less than my $500 deductible.
It's because they aren't really debunking anything. It's still a valid study that shows how many tickets, police reports, or insurance claims are filed per number of cars of each brand on the road.
They are just pointing out some nuance in the logic. Such as some brands of cars are less likely to make insurance claims. Especially since the "safest" cars are from three defunct brands where a claim would total the car.
Another criticism is that they are just using the number of incidents per number of cars from each brand on the road while not factoring how much the average driver of each vehicle drives. Factoring this in would likely cause "old people" brands like Buick, Lincoln, and Lexus to have more incidents per mile traveled and brands associated with a lot of highway driving (think work trucks/vans) such as Ram, Ford, Chevy, etc to be considered safer.
Just last weekend I was driving about an hour or so and saw a silver Nissan rogue that drove up on grassy median and managed to ka-chow itself. Then on the way back in a different area I saw a black Nissan Altima (my true nemesis) that crashed face first into the highway barrier and the driver was trying to climb her way out of the driver window because the door was blocked.
I’m convinced Nissan drivers are living in Grand Theft Auto.
I see Tesla’s speeding every day. I know they can go fast, but they should not be going fast in the places I see them doing it. Like 80mph on a populate street with a speed limit of 35.
True. My statement said MORE Teslas than other brands. Not ONLY Teslas’s. Given that Tesla is only one brand and sales numbers are not as high as say Toyota, this observation should not exist. But I see it.
I see non Tesla's speeding every day too and I'm sure you do too, but you tend to notice Tesla's because it confirms your existing opinion.
That's what we call confirmation bias.
Don’t give your rationalizations. I drive for a living. I see more Teslas speeding than any other brand of car. I know all car brands so I know what they are. I am not looking for just Teslas. So you can keep your “confirmation bias” crap.
That's the cool thing about biases, we all have them.
Even if you "know all car brands" you're going to notice more stuff that confirms your opinion, and other stuff will literally be invisible most of the time.
Driving for loving doesn't suddenly makes you a champion of objectivity.
Incorrect. I see cars speeding. I instantly recognize the brand. Confirmation bias is when you make a statement and then find examples to back it up. You have it completely backwards. I see speeding cars. Then I see what brands they are. And I see more Teslas speeding than any other brand. The Tesla is the last part of this equation. What you are doing is using your ignorance to assign a motive to someone that you don’t even know. It’s insulting.
No. I and using your own words against you. You are the one who made the ignorant comment. Your words speak for themselves. You dismissed someone’s statement and assigned a negative motive to it.
Don't WRXs get the most speeding tickets of any car model? Seems far more likely that it's the vape bros thrashing around their turbo Subies like morons who are wrecking, than the lesbian couple cautiously cruising around the back roads of Vermont.
Tbf WRX/STIs also just tend to get a lot of attention with the scoop, giant wing, and people modding them. A lot less under the radar than other sportier cars.
This whole article and study is ridiculous. Conclude who's a "bad driver" based on number of insurance claims.
No miles driven, weather or other conditions acounted for.
Like I'm pretty sure I had less crashes than Michael Schumacher, does that mean I'm a better driver than he is though?
SUV drivers are the worse, always speeding like they are invincible, rude and nasty. All SUV's look the same no matter who you buy them from. They are ugly, no personality. People who buy SUV's are idiots.
I drive a Ram and I can attest that fellow pick up truck drivers (especially the lifted ones) drive way too aggressively. But WTF is up with the constant pokes at Nissan buyers and drivers? Your jokes are old, kids. At this point can it's not just annoying but nauseating. How about some originality?
my selective experience
toyota, always parked in the left lane almost like they're actively trying to pace the highway
honda, not paying attention, no clue what is going on around them, half the time on their phones
ford, think because they have a blue oval they deserve to drive in the left lane with everyone behind them
honestly almost every car on the road in my area is those three makes, and they are the most annoying to find on the road
It's measured by incidents per 1000 drivers, not overall incidents.
I'd speculate that Mercury, Pontiac and Saturn drivers are low on the list because most of the remaining cars can't go that fast (if they ever could) and a lot the people driving them can't afford to be reckless and pay for repairs and tickets.
You're right, junk cars can only go maybe 50 mph max! Lol. 2009 was last year for Pontiac, and every single one of them could do a 100mph. My 72 Pontiac lead sled can do a 100 bone stock.
Do you not understand that this is flawed because they used per 1000 drivers instead of miles driven so cars they stopped making decades ago have the lowest incidence because they are rarely driven and vehicles used as daily drivers have the highest incidence. See how dumb that is?
Vehicle is mostly incidental IMO, its all about **demographics** and sometimes those demographics pick a certain model more than others.
Age is a huge factor for example, with 16 year olds driving way more recklessly than 61 year olds, and speaking of age that's an issue with vehicles too. The type of person that drives a 2023 BMW is much different than the one that drives a 2003.
Editorial Note: The content of this article is based on the author's opinions and recommendations alone. It may not have been reviewed, commissioned or otherwise endorsed by any of our network partners.
Aka: It's clickbait bullshit
Also, the author calls the Ram 1500 "fast" with a 7.4sec 0-60 time lol.
Maybe it's fast relative to it's competitors. And yeah, no shit it's not a peer reviewed study in a respected journal. Just some interesting number's analysis with documented sources.
F-150 is 6.2 seconds, Silverado is 6.4. It's the slowest by far. The note literally says none of this is verified and it's all opinion. Quit trying to justify your post that's been proven wrong several times.
What's the discussion? When I came back with facts, your response was "I didn't write the article". Everyone on this thread is telling you that this has been debunked multiple times, and even the article says "yeah, we know this is bullshit, it's just for clicks". Take your L and move on.
You see a thread on reddit on the "exact same article with the exact same stats" you personally saw before. Yet, you still click on it... to whine about it?
Honest question. We see that kind of whinny comments a lot on reddit. Why do you do this?
What even defines a bad driver. Most Toyota and Lexus drivers drive 10miles under the speed limit. Imo thats a really bad driver. Don't know if this is even taken into account
Right, and the metrics are pretty bad. Speeding doesn’t make a bad driver, but distracted driving looking at your phone does, and that’s not captured (except perhaps in accident stats)
I strongly disagree. Speeding on an open highway is not dangerous at all, and plenty of drivers who drive at or below the speed limit are very bad drivers. Speeding gets attention and gets focus in studies like this merely because it’s easy to measure, not because it’s actually dangerous driving.
Distracted driving is as dangerous or more dangerous than driving drunk, but it’s not easily observed, so people don’t get pulled over and cited for that.
Depends on what type of speeding we are talking about. Speeding while weaving through much slower traffic and making sketchy lane changes? Dangerous for sure. Speeding down a mostly empty stretch of highway in good weather and good visibility? Not dangerous at all. Yet because speed is easy to measure, both of those are treated the same as equally dangerous.
Dangerous, distracted driving is dangerous. Speeding is a separate variable that doesn’t BY ITSELF make the situation more dangerous.
The forces involved in an accident rise *exponentially* with the relative velocity involved.
KE = 1/2mv^2
Lets assume one driver is doing 100kph and another is doing 130kph. Assume that they're both equally skilled drivers. The one driving slower will both have A) more time to react to an accident, and B) do less damage to themselves and others in the case of one.
By definition, speeding is more dangerous.
Faster speed is more dangerous if you crash, but speeding doesn’t make a crash more likely - certainly not nearly to the same extent as driving and looking at your phone or touchscreens in the car. Speeding on an empty highway in good weather and good visibility isn’t dangerous, but it’s treated the same as speeding weaving through traffic and making dangerous lane changes. These are not the same thing, but are treated the same purely because speed is easy to measure, while dangerous and distracted driving isn’t.
