>Rams are known for powerful engines with impressive speed and horsepower. The Ram 1500, featured on J.D. Power’s list of fastest pickup trucks, is particularly notable for its ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. And that's when I realized the person writing this article is an idiot

Yea there's been like 4 articles citing this 1 study and every time someone points out "Incidents per 1,000 drivers" is a stupid metric to use in stead of "Incidents per 1,000 miles driven" or whatever measurement
View on Reddit #17009306

Professional_Goat185@reddit

I dunno, both of them can be pretty skewed. Cars just doing a lot of highway miles will naturally have less incidents per 1k miles, vs cars mostly bought for city driving.
View on Reddit #17094940

Vandrel@reddit

Not to mention it's also based on insurance claims. This is more of a list of the brands whose drivers are most likely to submit insurance claims.
View on Reddit #17011370

Makes sense. Who is submitting an insurance claim for a mercury? Just leave it there and walk home.

Which tracks, since Nissan is suspiciously absent. It makes sense that they are driving around without insurance.

I have a Nissan Sentra. I've been sideswiped by a Toyota Previa, had my rear glass broken and passenger side rear door dented by a random unhinged homeless dude, and have hit 3 deer in the 8 years I've owned it. I have insurance. I've never reported to insurance because other than the rear glass none of the other damage was anything but cosmetic and I don't care about this car as long as it keeps running properly. And in the case of the glass, replacing it was less than my $500 deductible.
View on Reddit #17016893

Bacon003@reddit

It's not even based on insurance claims. It's based on self-reported in from from insurance quotes for cars people are interested in insuring.

Can I get a link or a hint to help me find it? I'm not sure what to search to find an article that's debunking another article. Thanks.
View on Reddit #17006480

Epotheros@reddit

It's because they aren't really debunking anything. It's still a valid study that shows how many tickets, police reports, or insurance claims are filed per number of cars of each brand on the road. They are just pointing out some nuance in the logic. Such as some brands of cars are less likely to make insurance claims. Especially since the "safest" cars are from three defunct brands where a claim would total the car. Another criticism is that they are just using the number of incidents per number of cars from each brand on the road while not factoring how much the average driver of each vehicle drives. Factoring this in would likely cause "old people" brands like Buick, Lincoln, and Lexus to have more incidents per mile traveled and brands associated with a lot of highway driving (think work trucks/vans) such as Ram, Ford, Chevy, etc to be considered safer.

Just last weekend I was driving about an hour or so and saw a silver Nissan rogue that drove up on grassy median and managed to ka-chow itself. Then on the way back in a different area I saw a black Nissan Altima (my true nemesis) that crashed face first into the highway barrier and the driver was trying to climb her way out of the driver window because the door was blocked. I’m convinced Nissan drivers are living in Grand Theft Auto.

True. My statement said MORE Teslas than other brands. Not ONLY Teslas’s. Given that Tesla is only one brand and sales numbers are not as high as say Toyota, this observation should not exist. But I see it.
View on Reddit #17067131

I see non Tesla's speeding every day too and I'm sure you do too, but you tend to notice Tesla's because it confirms your existing opinion. That's what we call confirmation bias.
View on Reddit #17015976

RickWest495@reddit

Don’t give your rationalizations. I drive for a living. I see more Teslas speeding than any other brand of car. I know all car brands so I know what they are. I am not looking for just Teslas. So you can keep your “confirmation bias” crap.
View on Reddit #17016112

red_simplex@reddit

That's the cool thing about biases, we all have them. Even if you "know all car brands" you're going to notice more stuff that confirms your opinion, and other stuff will literally be invisible most of the time. Driving for loving doesn't suddenly makes you a champion of objectivity.
View on Reddit #17016463

RickWest495@reddit

Incorrect. I see cars speeding. I instantly recognize the brand. Confirmation bias is when you make a statement and then find examples to back it up. You have it completely backwards. I see speeding cars. Then I see what brands they are. And I see more Teslas speeding than any other brand. The Tesla is the last part of this equation. What you are doing is using your ignorance to assign a motive to someone that you don’t even know. It’s insulting.

View on Reddit #17009477

imitation_crab_meat@reddit

It's measured by incidents per 1000 drivers, not overall incidents. I'd speculate that Mercury, Pontiac and Saturn drivers are low on the list because most of the remaining cars can't go that fast (if they ever could) and a lot the people driving them can't afford to be reckless and pay for repairs and tickets.

View on Reddit #17014011

johnwayne1@reddit

Do you not understand that this is flawed because they used per 1000 drivers instead of miles driven so cars they stopped making decades ago have the lowest incidence because they are rarely driven and vehicles used as daily drivers have the highest incidence. See how dumb that is?
View on Reddit #17010460

HuskyPurpleDinosaur@reddit

Vehicle is mostly incidental IMO, its all about **demographics** and sometimes those demographics pick a certain model more than others. Age is a huge factor for example, with 16 year olds driving way more recklessly than 61 year olds, and speaking of age that's an issue with vehicles too. The type of person that drives a 2023 BMW is much different than the one that drives a 2003.

View on Reddit #17004681

tobyhatesmemes2@reddit

They literally define the metrics they used in the article
View on Reddit #17004970

i-like-foods@reddit

Right, and the metrics are pretty bad. Speeding doesn’t make a bad driver, but distracted driving looking at your phone does, and that’s not captured (except perhaps in accident stats)
View on Reddit #17007770

n8mo@reddit

I would argue that speeding, while certainly less egregious than distracted driving, *does* make you a worse driver than someone who obeys the limit.
View on Reddit #17008042

i-like-foods@reddit

I strongly disagree. Speeding on an open highway is not dangerous at all, and plenty of drivers who drive at or below the speed limit are very bad drivers. Speeding gets attention and gets focus in studies like this merely because it’s easy to measure, not because it’s actually dangerous driving. Distracted driving is as dangerous or more dangerous than driving drunk, but it’s not easily observed, so people don’t get pulled over and cited for that.
View on Reddit #17008565

FlyPenFly@reddit (OP)

Source on speeding on the highway being not dangerous at all? Or did you just pull it out your ass.
View on Reddit #17008639

i-like-foods@reddit

Depends on what type of speeding we are talking about. Speeding while weaving through much slower traffic and making sketchy lane changes? Dangerous for sure. Speeding down a mostly empty stretch of highway in good weather and good visibility? Not dangerous at all. Yet because speed is easy to measure, both of those are treated the same as equally dangerous. Dangerous, distracted driving is dangerous. Speeding is a separate variable that doesn’t BY ITSELF make the situation more dangerous.
View on Reddit #17013237

n8mo@reddit

The forces involved in an accident rise *exponentially* with the relative velocity involved. KE = 1/2mv^2 Lets assume one driver is doing 100kph and another is doing 130kph. Assume that they're both equally skilled drivers. The one driving slower will both have A) more time to react to an accident, and B) do less damage to themselves and others in the case of one. By definition, speeding is more dangerous.
View on Reddit #17009438

i-like-foods@reddit

Faster speed is more dangerous if you crash, but speeding doesn’t make a crash more likely - certainly not nearly to the same extent as driving and looking at your phone or touchscreens in the car. Speeding on an empty highway in good weather and good visibility isn’t dangerous, but it’s treated the same as speeding weaving through traffic and making dangerous lane changes. These are not the same thing, but are treated the same purely because speed is easy to measure, while dangerous and distracted driving isn’t.
