Possible unpopular opinion: I’m glad that Lt. Yar was killed off in s1.

I'm pretty sure that's not an unpopular opinion.
Personally, I loved her but I get the need to pump up worfs character. My problem is that they just killed her off because DC kept on asking where they were going with her character.
I really appreciate that she came back (and back and back) as either her original character or a relative of her character.

She quit. She and Gene Roddenberry were quite close and talked a lot. She was young with big dreams and wanted the freedom..

She was also not satisfied with her lack of importance in the show. This was before they started making character based episodes, and the writers really didn’t do anything with Yar. She was sick of having to be onset for 16hrs every day to simply be a pair of legs standing behind Patrick Stewart and occasionally having a single line of dialog. So she asked to be let go from her contract and they agreed.
There was also discussion in the exec level of getting rid of a female character, and had Crosby not left then either Sirtis or Gates would’ve gotten the axe. And lo and behold, Gates got the axe anyway before s2. This might have been because Majel took a liking to Sirtis offset, and the execs found out that Goldberg was serious about wanting a role, so Gates was next on the chopping block. The fans overall dislike at the time for Polaski and Wesley remaining on the show is what contributed to them bringing Gates back.
At least this is what I have garnered from numerous (and sometimes contradictory) interviews, articles, and books released over the past 25-30 years.

Polasky was rough. Never liked her at all.

I liked her. I like crusher better but Pulaski grew on me

Glad to know this. She Tasha was nothing before this show and was nothing after. If she would've grown up and stayed the whole show her options would probably be limitless.

If you are referring to the actress Denise Crosby then you need to read up on her more!
Being the grandchild of Bing Crosby, she could have chosen her life and been great at whatever she chose just by association and access to Hollywood. She chose otherwise. And her life stories are interesting! One in particular is life-thrattling!

The creature that killed her has the same voice and appearance as the sheliac

I didn't like Yar, but in all honesty, which actor was able to nail down their character in Season 1?
Data was annoying as shit
Troi had no idea what to do
Picard was an asshole
Worf was growling all the time
Geordi? Wooo-wee!
Beverly was also getting the axe
Riker may have been the closest to getting it right, yet he still felt off. I blame the clean shave.
Yar would've gotten better. I thought Yesterday's Enterprise was pretty good at pushing her forward without all the benefits of having been able to write for her character for 1.5 seasons. Regardless, she was definitely the most expendable in the group.

Troi was so pointless throughout the entire series that it took until mid-way through season 6 for someone to tell her to put on normal uniform.
thanatossassin@reddit
I blame that purely on the writers; they had no idea how to write for a therapist. And the uniform thing was such bullshit, Marina Sirtis hated the revealing uniform and wanted a regular one the whole time, but they have a man tell her to not wear it. Fuck that.
