Yeah I wish it was available here, but I wonder how much Suzuki could realistically sell? It's a small 2 door 4x4 and that would be a hard sell to anyone outside of the niche.
Based on my travels through the USA and my impressions of what Americans like in their cars, I don't think the Jimny would sell well at all. Ignoring the size, it's a totally barebones and unrefined vehicle. I spent thousands on suspension upgrades for mine and I never managed to get the horrendously bad body roll under control. I also spent thousands on sound proofing and audio upgrades but the wind noise was omnipresent at any speeds over 30mph. At 60mph you may as well turn the stereo off because you just can't hear anything.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Jimny. I bought it in 2021 when they were US$17k and it served its purpose as a cute affordable adventure car very well. Nowadays they are US$22k and I would probably not buy one at that price. If I wanted to spend $22k on a tiny off road toy, I would buy a Polaris instead.
There are MPG requirements. Fast and vehicles with less safety equipment like the 80s and 90s are gone.
I’m better off going the SB100 route if I want that fast and “powerful” feeling as a registered vehicle. People are bound by the minimum requirements for windshield, turn signals, head lights, side mirrors, wheels & tires, and brakes.
The Jimny is not a particularly emissions friendly vehicle. The engine is not really powerful enough for it, it has the aerodynamics of a box, and the dated transmission options are a 5MT or 4AT.
CAFE regs are also based on vehicle footprint which means it would also be expected to hit most stringent emissions regs for the class.
CAFE doesn't distinguish between a full blown 4x4 and a compact crossover. The Jimny would be in the same CAFE class as small crossovers, of which there are many that exceed 26mpg.
then the issue isn't the vehicle
it's the rigged systems in place that want to discourage competition
is it pleasant spinning 4500rpm at 80mph? probably not, but i want to at least have that choice instead of 60k for a jeep or toyota
You're comparing radically dissimilar specs though. Why would a realistic potential Jimny buyer be looking at a fully loaded Rubicon EcoDiesel 4dr? I own a 2022 Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel with basically everything but color matched top and fenders... It was $60K after discount in February 2022.
I do heavily off-road my truck.
You can get into a Wrangler more appropriately comparable to a Jimny for around $35-$38K. Same for a 4Runner or Bronco. That's still more than a Jimny but it's not literally double the price like you presented.
and Jimny starts at $20k
i'm not familiar with any new truck-based SUV sold in america for less than double that and is as reliable as a jimny and doesn't force unnecessary options or make you take a complete bath on trade-in
open up the market, make it truly competitive
This isn't an issue of the American market being open or not. Its an issue of market fit in the first place. If there were real demand then changes could be made to make it meet compliance requirements. But its the lack of demand that's the issue.
If I'm putting on my manufacturer's hate and see posts like yours... I don't think they're a sincere expression of demand. You keep moving the goal posts and throwing out red herrings.
you challenged my claim that the average new toyota/jeep 4x4 isn't 60k
but your's is
you gave some base price that no dealer actually stocks and will be more than happy to charge you out the nose should you try to order it
your claim is no demand for affordable vehicles without loans while not discussing the amount of testing and network costs it will take to bring a brand back on our shores
I have a fully loaded one (the EcoDiesel isn't even available now, it was discontinued). That isn't the average one, not even close. Further, you didn't say average (though you've now totally edited this out of your original post). You're talking about wanting a Jimny, it isn't reasonable to compare that to a fully loaded Wrangler/Bronco/4Runner. The Jimny, ignoring size differences, isn't any better equipped than a Sport S or base Bronco/4Runner even fully optioned.
No. You're just telling me you've never looked into seriously ordering a Wrangler. Ordering is by far the best way to get a good price on a Wrangler, regardless of trim level. But even if you did want to go to the lot and buy one. Even my local Stellantis dealer in a town of 9K people has multiple Sport S in stock, discounted.
No. my claim is there's no demand for a BOF, sub compact, under equipped and powered SUV in the US market. There is demand for affordable vehicles... satisfied by the used market. The vast majority of American buyers wanting a 4x4 in the $20K ish price range are going to choose a used option. Because it... will be larger, have better NVH, have a higher quality interior, etc. Even if that means it has 100K miles on it (like on a GX460/470 for example).
It's absolutely the fault of the vehicle. It's shaped like a box, has an underpowered n/a motor and transmission options that were dated 20 years ago. They had to pull it out and reintroduce it as a light commercial vehicle in the UK because it was dragging Suzuki's average economy down.
>it's the rigged systems in place that want to discourage competition
Light trucks are by far the most popular segment in the US and account for almost 2/3 of vehicle sales.
I would argue it's all of the above.
No dealer network in the USA anymore, not compliant to any North American safety or emissions standard (though one can reasonably argue it could pass those if Suzuki wanted, since it does comply with the European and Australian regulations) and, regardless of what people on this subreddit keep saying, the new car market has shown time and time again that the vast majority of American new car buyers, with the exception of some enthusiasts, are not interested in small cars at all.
And even ignoring all of that, there is little motivation for Suzuki to start offering a vehicle in a new market when they cannot fully satisfy the demand in the already-existing markets already.
Suzuki can ask Toyota to sell Jimny in America if they want, Toyota and Suzuki have shared some new car models and working together to develop some new car models, so it makes sense to happen.
Now question is Toyota not having clearly plan to do that.
If I had a Jimny *and* wanted something as absurd as that body kit, I'd make sure the decals came off, since one of the engines available is a 1.0L turbo triple (don't laugh; the current Chevy Trailblazer is using the same thing only ~ 200cc bigger).
>since one of the engines available is a 1.0L turbo triple
The Jimny only has two engines, the 0.658L turbo 3 for the narrowbody kei car spec version in Japan and a 1.5L N/A engine for the widebody model everywhere else.
>don't laugh; the current Chevy Trailblazer is using the same thing only ~ 200cc bigger
The 1.2T in the Trailblazer makes more than twice the power as the narrowbody Jimny does.
Upon release, the current Jimny had an available turbo 3-pot, [per Car & Driver](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a21601627/the-new-suzuki-jimny-is-the-tiny-body-on-frame-4x4-box-we-want/). The 660cc *kei* version was, is, and will always be JDM-only, while the other engine choices are for the export model(s). Since I live in the US--and since the engine choices here may vary wildly if it was ever to be sold here--I didn't notice when/if there may have been changes in the powertrain lineup so if it's not available today then meh.
Available in a Jimny or not, Suzuki's 1.0 turbo-3 makes 110 hp in the Swift which isn't half of anything in the Trailblazer.
Half of this discussion is hypothesizing or fantasizing about the Jimny coming (back) to the US. I live in the US. If I want to know about a vehicle that has some popularity in the US, then I fail to see why my choice of a thoroughly well-known automotive publication that has been running for over 60 years is discounted as corroboration simply because it's written by people who speak English as a first language, but you do you.
The fuck are you going on about? What does the English language have to do with anything? I discounted it because I told you what engines it has and you grabbed something that's incorrect to prove me wrong even though literally two seconds on Wikipedia would tell you it has two engines.
The Little Δ is adorable; while it certainly looks like a shrunk G-Wagon with the face of a Delta Integrale, it also resembles a [Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution](https://old.reddit.com/r/carspotting/comments/15ugn1q/mitsubishi_pajero_evolution_in_nh).
Man... Suzuki was *this* close to surviving. If they had held on another couple years when everyone needed to have an SUV/CUV like it's a fucking law or something. I owned a Suzuki and it was perfect blend of quality, reliability, and affordability. Mitsubishi would not exist in America is Suzuki had stayed around.
My family has a 2002 Grand Vitara that refuses to fucking die and we want to replace it but it just DOESN'T CARE about death
This thing has barely been maintained for the 20 god forsaken years we put it through only for it to continue laughing maniacally in the face of the grim reaper
The voyager won't be the last proof of humanity's existence, I'm absolutely sure it'll be this hunk of CHAMPAGNE brown called the 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara
To celebrate it I'll be buying a Gsx-r because Suzuki has proven themselves to me lol
Fucking awesome dude. I am a huge Suzuki fan both 2 and 4 wheels. I am glad to see them going strong in other countries as well as their motosports in the US.
its like those weird mixed dogs where its half chihuahua half great dane
this is like a G wagon fucked a delta integrale and I wish we got to see them rolling around here
buddy has an Acty addiction and theyre super awesome
