I genuinely don’t understand UK chips. They always look cold and soggy. I see a bunch of British Chinese takeaway videos on TikTok, and for some reason they always order chips, and the chips are always stuck together in a block and look freezing cold. I just don’t get the appeal
Looking cold doesn’t mean they’re actually cold. Also, it’s an undisputed fact here that Chinese shop chips are sub par. You get your chips from the Chippy, then grab whatever else at the Chinese - that’s the order.
I'm from the UK and I don't understand it. The chip shop chips here are stodgy and just horrible. I've never understood the appeal. I'd want them cooked way longer and at a way higher temp. Those fuckers need to CRUNCH!
Over 200 years of stealing spices from other countries and all they use is salt on their “chips” (I’m saying “chips” because I’m American) what a waste.
Pasta sauce contains the herbs & spices (I work in a pizza place don’t worry I know). I don’t see any curry in this photo… I see a wannabe poutine on a bun.
Pasta sauces in italy rarely contain spices. Take the examples bolognese, carbonara, amatriciana, arrabbiata; which are some of the most popular italian pasta sauces. Bolognese has 0 herbs or spices, carbonara has 0 herbs or spices, amatriciana has 0 herbs or spices, arrabbiata has 1 spice - chilli - and 0 herbs.
The thing that you are trying to ignore is that many of the finest cuisines in the world are based on "simple ingredients" (in italy its often cheese, meat, olive oil, sometimes garlic). Herbs and spices are just ingredients, they are not essential in anything. Even in this photo there is curry sauce, which is normally made with ingredients such as cumin, coriander, ginger, etc.
And "I work in a pizza place don't worry I know" about pasta is pretty funny.
Haha, laugh all you want. I’ve made and seen a lot of different pizzas and pastas. Not using herbs and spices is a injustice to our short lives on this rock.
Yes- simple is good when you want to be simple. But without extravagance every once in a while makes Jack a dull boy.
“But no extravagance every once in a while makes Jack a dull boy”
And that is why we have 12,000 Indian restaurants, 7000 Chinese restaurants, 4000 Italian restaurants, 2500 Japanese restaurants, around 3500+ fried chicken places, a surge in Caribbean restaurants over the past decade, 2000 Thai restaurants and countless other foreign food establishments.
From what I’ve seen, there aren’t any other comments that point out the abundance of foreign restaurants in the UK.
Whether it’s a dead horse or not, you’re still ignorant.
Herbs. Perhaps I should name some italian pasta dishes and how many of them contain any of those ingredients? Bolognese - 0. Carbonara - 0. Amatriciana - 0. Cacio e pepe- 0. Arrabbiata - 0. Spaghetti allo scoglio - 0. Pesto - 1 (big win for you there). Ravioli - 0. Sorrentina - 0.
Need I continue? Simple ingredients can make just as effective and delicious a meal as one with herbs and spices.
i misread and thought you said herbs and spices in your first comment….
but i guess apart from that point almost all of the dishes you listed contain the ingredients i listed as well as spices. bolognese often has basil and thmye. carbonara very often has black pepper. cacio e pepe well its in the name. arrabiata has basil. pesto youre so gracious. ravioli are we just listing pasta shapes theres dozens of different fillings? also often has nutmeg basil oregano. sorrentina often has basil.
There is no fucking way you are counting black pepper. If you count that brits put "spices" on everything. And no, some chefs may put herbs in some of these dishes but all of them have a classical recipe that does not contain any of the herbs listed. I may have cheated and when u didn't list a specific herb I didn't count it but the point is that simple ingredients can make a dish just as good as a dish with many herbs and spices in.
i mean we agree on the same major point that was derailed by me misreading your first comment… but to say that all chefs have a classical recipe without those herbs is an insane statement as so many of those recipes use tons of different things that can be substituted in and out and any real italian chef is gonna default to their moms as the “classical” recipe.
This is such a weird thing to have a gripe over. They’re chips pal, not a chilli, why do you need spices on them? I’d like to add as well that I’ve been to the US, and when I’ve been there, any time I ordered fries, they all came with salt, so I’m not sure what your point is.
Chips are plain and hardy, they don’t really need to be seasoned outside of salt & vinegar, and if you’ve got a decent selection of sauces.
Lol, what? Most places don’t usually put anything other than salt on their version of fries/chips. American fries, salt. European style frites, salt. British chips, salt and maybe vinegar.
Not counting condiments, because we obviously have those in the UK too, and you can literally see an example of one in the picture above.
They are two different things, both are good. French fries are very common in the UK, as are chip shop chips, because both are good. Have you ever had chip shop chips?
It’s referring to the time it’s eaten at, rather than the content of what’s being consumed - here’s a [wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_(meal)) lol.
If you give that Wiki a read you’ll see why Americans calling dinner Coke all of sudden would be befuddling haha.
That article says that the drink itself is part of the meal called "tea" (hence the meal being called "tea"), which brings us full circle: where's the tea? ;)
> In *The Cambridge Social History of Britain, 1750–1950*, **high tea is defined thus**:
>
> > the central feature was the extension of a meal based predominantly on bread, butter **and tea** by the inclusion of some kind of fish or meat usually cooked in a frying pan.
Yes, but right before that:
“High tea typically consists of a savoury dish (either something hot, or cold cuts of meat such as ham salad), followed by cakes and bread, butter and jam.”
It doesn’t necessarily need a drink. The term has become a blanket term, as mentioned at the start of the Wiki.
Fish, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce. UK.
Idk why people are being so critical honestly. "It looks like vomit" yeah, so does chili con carne, spaghetti bolognese, or really any meat in a brown/red sauce. Actually try it and it tastes amazing
Now let's go out for a big plate of Grits! A couple of Sloppy Joes! Then ma will bake us a MEATLOAF, with some Chicken Bog and a Hoppin John, my friend whipped up a fluffernutter and a polish boy to wash it down along with an extra hot Garbage Plate, my friend from Carolina is gonna bring the Livermush, a guy from Maine is bringing his famous Boiled Dinner and on the side I have a spoonbread
Tea is British for dinner, I believe dinner means lunch, and I think breakfast is just tea.
Theres a split between tea/dinner vernacular which runs along the north/south divide.
Interesting. There's actually a weird split in north America too. So I'm used to breakfast (small/optional morning meal), then lunch (medium sized midday meal) and dinner (larger evening meal)
But there are places in the southern US, and I think Canada too, where what they call dinner is what I would call lunch, and the evening meal is "supper."
So I heard someone from rural Ireland do the very same breakfast-dinner-supper thing, which was what brought my attention to it going on in the UK. Based on what I've gathered from other comments, its a rural/urban divide thing. The people I know in Ireland are from the rural West, the North is considered the more rural/working class part of England and as I understand it, the southern US is the same.
Tea is just a beverage though, anything other definition is just confusing, cmon people.
Well, the Irish aren’t British/from the UK, unless they’re in Northern Ireland - the rest is the Republic.
And unfortunately for you, tea is interchangeable here man, especially with our older generations lol.
I’m not sure where you’re getting that from, as I already made note of the fact that geographically, they’re still within the Isles. Geographically, we are still in Europe, yes, but we left the EU (European Union), I’m well aware of that.
My point is that they have a different culture and way of life, so our proximity is irrelevant.
Nothing, in fact, I think it’s you who’s having some trouble here. What you’re saying to me, is something I’ve already agreed with and addressed - you just can’t seem to separate physical placement, from cultural ways of life.
Just because we’re within the same Isles, doesn’t mean our cultures or quirks are inherently the same.
I never said anything about culture.
Irish are British because Ireland is part of Britain.
Brazil isn't part of the USA, but Brazilians are Americans.
Taiwan isn't part of the PRC, but Taiwanese are Chinese because Taiwan is China.
Well, I did mention culture, because that has more merit to it in regards to defining the Irish people than their geography. We’ll have to agree to disagree, because both of us are arguing in circles and I’m sure you’ve got better things to do. Here’s what an Irishman has to say in response to your comment:
“Simple, I was born in the Republic of Ireland and live in Dublin and I am not entitled to a British passport.
I did not get a vote in the Brexit referendum and I will not be leaving the EU if or when Britain exits.
The British army is not the army of my country.
The BBC is not an official broadcaster in the Republic of Ireland and the British government does not represent me.
Nothing is ever simple and the concept of “Britain” and “British” is about the most complex you can come upon. The UK used to be known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and is now know as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However using the term “Great Britain” can refer to the island of Great Britain just as the use of the term Ireland refers to that second big island, Ireland.
The real issue is that the terms Britain and British and United Kingdom are interchanged incorrectly as one can refer to a geographical location, the British isles, which includes the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Skye, the Isle of Wight etc… whereas the United Kingdom refers to a political grouping.
Interestingly enough the status of the Isle of Man as British but not in the United Kingdom is aslo an interesting debate.
It is acceptable for people to be called Welsh or Scottish or English and British as well. It is acceptable to call people Irish and British if they live in Northern Ireland as it is part of the UK. But south of the border, in the Republic of Ireland, it is not normally acceptable to call people British unless they claim British ancestry.
Or course I am ignoring genetics and peoples and tribes migrations as this open another whole can of worms. Suffice it to say I, and most people living in the Republic of Ireland, do not identify with being British and would normally find the term insulting.”
So am I. The Irish in the ROI don’t consider themselves British. That’s a fact. What I brought isn’t irrelevant, it’s integral to the point I’m making - your oversimplification of it all is irrelevant.
The same way American citizens don’t understand complex geopolitical issues.
Anyway, I said let’s agree to disagree, and I’ll be moving on from this, it’s a futile argument.
Yes, in the south lunch means lunch and dinner means dinner. We also sometimes use tea for dinner too but never dinner to mean lunch, that one hurts my head a bit.
What the person above is like referring to is what I would call 'afternoon tea' which involves literal tea or coffee, finger sandwiches, and scones.
And "scone" rhymes with "don" instead of "phone?" I wasn't aware of that until Paul Hollywood sternly insisted that the former is correct, not the USA pronunciation.
This is one of the huge debates in the UK actually mate. People will argue whether it’s Scone as in don (the way I say it), or scone as in phone (the way all of my friends in the Midlands say it).
People will happily argue over how to say that and also whether or not the jam or the clotted cream goes onto the scone first 😂
Americans that act like full British breakfasts are somehow the weirdest most horrible food ever makes absolutely no sense. Most of the food on the plate Americans commonly eat some variation of for breakfast too.
Only ones you don’t are black pudding and baked beans, and neither are particularly weird at all. Blood sausage is common across Europe and much of the Americas, and I shouldn’t have to point out the cuisine of your southern neighbour that so many of you love.
Absolute *classic* Brit being completely oblivious to how bad and strange their food is compared to normal people.
Americans might also have sausage and bacon, but it's important to note the superior version of both. Same for hash browns/home fries/potatoes. In fact, a couple eggs are probably the *only* thing Britas do get right.
Though you didn't mention them, you won't find giant whole-ass tomatoes or mushrooms on any American breakfast plate. Along with beans, of course, and blood pudding *is* weird as fuck. Plus in your infinite ignorance you miss our on buttermilk biscuits (and gravy) and never seem to have pancakes and waffles on your famous "full"
How sad.
You’re acting as if we’re all some monolith. I don’t particularly like an English breakfast, because I find it ridiculous to eat that much greasy food in the morning and I can’t stand tomatoes, baked beans or black pudding (which has dropped in popularity as the generations have gone by) - just give me a bacon sandwich.
American food though, is objectively trash - as in, it’s literally bad for you. The phrase ‘junk food’ was coined in America. I love your fast food, don’t get me wrong, but there’s no need to douse everything in grease, sugar, and butter.
Grits is a regional thing, concentrated mostly in the south. I'm in California and have never seen grits in person.
They may taste all right, but I wouldn't know.
I just spent five days in London over christmas vacation, and I'd be damned if a single food item blew my mind. It's like british people are afraid of something having too much taste.
For example, the sauce I got with my fish and chips on Carnaby Street tasted less than the plain Heinz mayonnaise that was standing on the table. Thank god for ketchup. The weather was good though.
Don’t knock it until you try it. Fish & Chip shop chips (fries) are better than any chip you’ll ever have in your life if you go to the right establishment.
peas are fine, but if you've never been eating something otherwise pealess and thought to yourself "this needs some pea wet", that's because you're not british
If they are done properly then you get big soggy, clouds of delight, covered in tonnes of salt and vinegar, and if you are lucky then you get the crispy bits from the bottom of that batch, too.
I live in Abu Dhabi and it’s this that I miss the most (family/friends aside) about being home. In a week’s trip, I will make time for 2 of these bad boys, although I prefer a beef and onion pie, to fish.
Why is it that Brits get offended when people say their cuisine is mostly fried beige colored stuff, but every single time I see them post food it’s fried (or sometimes baked) beige colored stuff. This, Yorkshire pudding (which looks like some type of roll), toad in the hole, etc.
Possibly because we use less ingredients haha.
Above is just Potato cooked in oil (usually rapeseed). Salt and vinegar can be added to taste.
It's really eye opening to see what additional ingredients are used in the states just to make food look more appealing.
Worth checking out some US vs UK comparison videos, some of the same branded products are much healthier in the UK as they are not allowed to add certain ingredients.
im sure its delicious but it does have a very diahrrea puke and blood type vibe going on n everything else is kinda of an even shade of brown, it could really use like, idk,. a single vegetable
im not talking abt health its more that visually there's nothing like fresh looking in the picture which adds to it looking unappetizing, i know there's peas in it but they look like they are being regurgitated by the fried fish
You said there should be a vegetable, while there was a vegetable. Now the problem is the placement of the peas?
Fried food doesn't look fresh in the way a salad or steamed veg would, that's just the way it is with deep fried food, particularly in batter or breading.
