I really HATE frontend web dev. Are there similarities with mobile app dev?

When working collaboratively on software, the visual design and layout of any application is something that a professional User Interface / User Experience Designer handles. Frontend is very visual but more in the sense that it requires a keen eye for detail and being able to take an effect, break it down into components in your head, and recreate it with code. Anyways, point is you don’t have to be a UI/UX designer or graphic designer to be a good frontend engineer, but tbh if you neither enjoy design and human-computer interaction nor the challenge of recreating interactive visual content, frontend probably isn’t for you. I think you would actually like embedded programming a lot. There’s nothing more tangible than making LEDs light up and controlling motors. And definitely do try out backend, there are many software engineers who hate doing visual things and love working on core application code on the backend. You mentioned game programming, and gameplay programming definitely works with a lot of fun control code for core gameplay mechanics and is far from the UI. But it’s hard to recommend gameplay programming to someone who doesn’t already know they want to do it because working in the gaming industry sucks and it can get much more mathematically intensive than other software fields pretty fast.
