You can, in fact, shoot 9mm in a .40 cal handgun

I've always been so paranoid but yesterday at the range I had my first ever failure to feed and sure as shit there was a .40 failing to enter my 9mm barrel. I don't think the range master noticed but I'm glad it wasn't the other way around.

Saw a guy at a range load 9mm into a Beretta Model 96, thinking it was just any old Model 92.
Took him about 3 rounds to figure it out.

Yeah found that out when i rented a P226, they said I could use my ammo since it’s normal 9mm. Turned out to be one of those 40 226s. That was cool.

Almost exactly how it sounded.
pforsbergfan9@reddit
You can shoot almost anything out of any gun once.
MArkansas-254@reddit
Yeah, just ask Kentucky ballistics. 🥴

Man when my father in law showed me that video, I wept for an hour
BobKnightly@reddit
Do you happen to have a link or description of the video mentioned? I’d love to look it up.

I do not. Didn’t know it was caught. A 50 BMG blew up and almost killed him. He overcharges reloads to blow up guns on his YouTube channel. He’s a Large Caliber fanatic. Check him out.

But did it cycle?
mreed911@reddit (OP)
Yep.

I was at an outdoor range, and I noticed that the guy on the next bench was having problems with his SUB2K. He was having trouble loading his mag- rounds kept spewing out, and when he finally go a mag in, it fired once and jammed - and when he pulled the bolt back, the rounds fountained out.
It was kinda comical, but I couldn't just watch, so I offered to help. I actually noticed the bulged case on the bench right away and checked the carbine - sure enough, it was .40S&W, and he'd bought a box of 9mm ammo. It was his first firearm, he'd just bought it that morning, and somehow didn't realize he'd bought it in .40S&W.
I didn't have any .40, so I let him run his box through my SUB2K (which was chambered in 9mm).

Apparently had a 9mm mixed into my .40 and didn’t notice (both Syntech). Sounded like a squib, verified that it wasn’t. Found the brass on the ground. Primer blew out, case expanded to fit the chamber.
No damage to the gun (Glock 23), no ill effects. I don’t recommend you do this. I had a decent stage run going and reshoots never go as well.
Twissn@reddit
I did this once too. Creepy feeling.
Price-x-Field@reddit
Yep, it just won’t cycle and probably isn’t good for the gun/barrel
mreed911@reddit (OP)
It cycled. Just made a strange sound. :)

More than likely you had appreciable blowby, making it sound funny. It's sort of the light version of firing a 50BMG in a 12ga.
Generally speaking, it's "safe" (assuming the gun can lock up) to fire a smaller diameter round in a larger diameter barrel because the pressure should be lower due to pressure escaping around the bullet. Not the best idea, but way less likely to cause a kaboom (but always check for bore obstructions after firing) vs firing a larger diameter bullet in a smaller diameter barrel (i.e. 300BO in 5.56 barrels).
mreed911@reddit (OP)
Yep. Just glad it cleared.
floridaman711@reddit
You can once.
mreed911@reddit (OP)
More.

Earlier this year I was at a class next to a guy who was running a G22 and he reached down at one point picked a round off the ground, tossed it in his mag and fired it. Just like you described it sounded like a squib but no damage to the gun.
MrGoodkat69@reddit
Oh yes!
I have a range buddy who used to constantly brag about the one Glock he owns, mainly because it's a .40 and he has a 9mm barrel for it.
I'll never forget the time he accidentally fired a 9mm out of the .40 barrel, it jammed, and he quickly ejected the brass and threw it off to the side.
I said "hold up, how did your super reliable Glock just jam?" And went and picked up the brass.
It was bulged just like in the photo and I instantly knew what happened. We don't let that one down. There's less bragging about the ability to convert calibers these days haha!
10gaugetantrum@reddit
I find that brass all the time.
mreed911@reddit (OP)
9 in 40 brass?
10gaugetantrum@reddit
Yes. So no need to feel bad.

First in thousands. Glad it went okay.
