Their engine doesn't know fast from slow so...

Toyota Motor Corporation utilizes 2 stage airbag technology based off a sensor in the seat that measures weight. This is to tell the differences between a bag of groceries, an infant car seat, or an adult human. As you can guess, the first stage is for lighter occupants while the second stage is to slow down the mass associated with adults.

Sorry for being out of topic just wanna know some opinion. Which would be better to choose a car brand these days, Toyota or Nissan? P.S. These two are my preferred brands for now.

Yalls cars have airbags?
View on Reddit #16306717

My daily driver is an e36 m3 with the original 27 year old airbag in the wheel. I don't know if I want that thing to go off lol

My 91 civic doesn't have one from factory so I ain't got to worry about it going off 😂

Minor compared to the dangers caused by Toyota LED headlights. 4 Runners should be pulled from the roads for this reason. LED rays straight into the eyes of oncoming motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Killers.
View on Reddit #16320843

_FUCKTHENAZIADMINS_@reddit

What do you mean by LED rays? Light?
View on Reddit #16348300

fliTDI@reddit

Yes. In my view halogen bulbs create a beam of light. LEDs emit rays from chips which, clearly, is very different and in this case blinding.

RandomMew@reddit

So my 2021 Corolla is affected by this, but according to Toyota’s recall website they are not going to have the parts available for repair until Q3 of 2024. So that’s fun.
View on Reddit #16347360

glazinglas@reddit

The airbag deploys, but I guess they can see your size and adjust now? That’s pretty cool.
View on Reddit #16301269

avboden@reddit

No, they don't deploy if the weight is lower than X amount, it's a child safety thing, has been around for ages. In this case the airbag may not deploy even with an adult in the seat, which is obviously bad.
View on Reddit #16302943

testthrowawayzz@reddit

> though I can't find what year they implemented them. approximately 2005 is when they started putting them in
View on Reddit #16345194

JackieDL@reddit

There actually is an adjustment, most airbags nowadays are dual stage. There are two charges and two circuits to a single airbag and it changes deployment strategies depending on occupant classification and impact severity. A lot of cars even use position sensors in the driver’s seat to account for the driver’s size.
View on Reddit #16304906

avboden@reddit

I stand corrected, didn't realize toyota used dual-stage airbags yet, it seems they do, very very very little documentation about it but found a few in literature
View on Reddit #16306223

terraphantm@reddit

Dual stage airbags have been around a few decades. I’d be surprised if any manufacturer didn’t use them these days.

as a petite adult, this is pretty concerning :( a lot of my friends & family have these vehicles. i’ve ran into this issue with many other manufacturers (not setting off the airbag sensor). my vehicle isn’t one of the affected, thankfully.

View on Reddit #16306927

Corsair4@reddit

To be clear, my list was independent of Takata recalls. The rangers were recalled because technicians didn't read the manual and installed the replacement Takata bags improperly.
View on Reddit #16307147

Frequent_Opportunist@reddit

Does it matter why the airbags are a safety risk?
View on Reddit #16311258

Corsair4@reddit

The Takata airbag thing took the entire industry by surprise, so I don't think it's fair to blame Ford for that one. Improperly fixing it because of technician errors - that IS on Ford.
View on Reddit #16315451

Corsair4@reddit

Yeah, it's just other not dangerous stuff like driveshafts on explorers and f250/350s and f150 seatbelts that can start fires and transmissions that indicate they are in park when they arent, and diesel fuel leaks and detaching steering wheels. Little things like that.
View on Reddit #16307070

Frequent_Opportunist@reddit

There were a lot of auto manufacturers affected by the airbags because it was the same company (Takata) making them for about half the vehicles sold in the world. Ford has had its fair share of dangerous recalls throughout history.
View on Reddit #16306786

VRSvictim@reddit

For sure. I wrote without thinking and only based it on my own experience which is obviously not representative. Built ford rough is the joke for a reason.

IIRC the dual-stage bags were around 2000. Anecdotally I think the early Toyota bags were *extremely* loud when they went off. It was a common complaint against that particular brand back when I used to see a lot of crashes of them. "I'm a little sore, and I'll heal-up, but y'all need to pay me X dollars for the tinnitus". obligatory: eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

so this is an actual recall? as in they need to take the cars to the dealership for a fix.
View on Reddit #16329231

grizzly_teddy@reddit

Unlike Tesla, most recalls for other manufacturers require you to go to the dealer - oftentimes even when it is just a software update. This is because not all the software in the car is completely connected. Many modules are almost completely self containing, so you have to physically hook up to that module to update the software.

These vehicles may inaccurately assess the occupant’s size in the passenger seat, potentially leading to the airbag not deploying as intended. The recall covers 1.12 million worldwide, one million of which are located in the United States. It affects certain Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlanders, and Sienna Hybrids, as well as certain Lexus ES250, ES300H, and RX350s from 2020-2022 model years.
