How far away do you drive for your weekly grocery shop?

I've heard people driving an hour or more to get groceries. Is that normal?

Within 10 minutes of me, there are 2 GIANTS, 2 Aldi's 2 Targets, Acme, ShopRite and Walmart.

Not normal, as most of our population live in more dense areas (thus, why they're more dense). Even in smaller communities there are usually closer options. I have a friend who lives in a super small town in Colorado, and she drives a half hour once a month to stock up on the bulk of her groceries.

No, that’s not common. Most Americans live in either urban or suburban areas. There’s like 6-8 grocery stores within a 5 mile radius of me. I drive to one that’s like a 3-5 minute drive away.

My closest Walmart is 45 minutes away ..my closest Sams Club is an hour. I do each trip 1x a month. There is a local grocery store but it’s high prices and not ideal. I’m pretty rural (my town has 1 red light). To me, it’s normal.

I drive 41 miles from a rural area to another city. There are a few places to get food closer but this store is our preferred place to shop and we do other errands in the area. We order online, bring a cooler, pick up the groceries, get lunch, drop by the hardware store, etc. I think most people in a city probably don't go very far for groceries.

10 minutes? About? There's another grocery store a bit closer. And then at least a handful of more specialty deli/butcher shops scattered around town. Growing up in a different area, the grocery store was closer to around 20 minutes, and it was the 'close one', with the other store/option being about 30 minutes in the other direction. There are some places known as "food deserts"; meaning there is very limited access to a grocery, but I haven't lived in one such area (or maybe the place I grew up would count as one, not sure how they define "food desert"; but it's not like the grocery store was inaccessible, it was just a solid 20-30 min drive).

Most people are going to live in close proximity to a store (and by close, I mean a 10-15 minute drive at the most). I grew up in the boonies of eastern NC back in the 70s-80s, it was about a half hour drive to the grocery store then. Now, I'm about 5 minutes away or less.

An hour is extremely unusual for a typical shopping trip. Consider for a moment, that the furthest distance between two McDonald's in the lower 50 states of the US is only 115mi. I can't find the same data for Walmart, but we can assume that it's probably less than double the same distance. In Alaska, the most rural parts of the north, or Texas, maybe. I'd bet that the people you're talking about are talking about visiting a specific store, like Whole Foods or Costco instead of a regular grocery store.

Do you tow a trailer with your bike? I'm trying to imagine carrying 3 weeks worth of my family's groceries on my bike. I'll do a quick run on the bike if I just need to pick up a couple things. It's my wife and I. I have the bike set up for touring with a rear rack and 2-40 liter bags and a wide front rack with netting. I can carry a surprising amount of groceries and have made an art of efficient packing of my particular bags. And if my wife comes along she can carry a good deal, if less than me. But if I expect to get an extra large amount or I'm planning a party/road trip and I want a lot of heavy and bulky drinks, I'll just drive. Not very necessary most of the time. I did have an old child trailer at one time that was for pulling my (late) dog but it was never worth the hassle to use for groceries. It was mostly for bringing her to work.

Within a 5 mile drive, or about 20 minutes drive time I have: Trader Joe’s Whole Foods 2 outlets of the large local grocery store 2 outlets of a smaller local grocery store 1 outlets of a different smaller local grocery store 2 Aldi I live in a large, prosperous suburb. None of those stores are a Walmart. When I was a child I lived in a more rural place and the single grocery store was about 12 miles away. The closest options are 2 Krogers, each about 5-7 minutes drive. I'll go to one of those for one-off stuff. For the restock runs I prefer to go to Aldi, that's more like 10-12 minutes. Under 10 minutes. I generally shop at Costco and Aldi. Both are under 10 minutes away. If I walk or ride my bike to the closest grocery store it’s about a mile.

I have 3 grocery stores within 15 minutes of my house. Actually 5 if you count Walmart and the small one that only sells healthfood.

About a mile, one of the reasons I chose this complex honestly, it is off the road a good way but once you get on the main road everything is right there.

1.1 miles.

0.5 miles. Anything more than a 15 minute drive would seem like a huge nuisance to me.

Depends on where you live. I’m relatively close to my grocery store as it is only 1 mile away. My parents on the other hand are semi rural. They are 4 miles from the highway gas station convenience store, 8 miles from a dollar general, and 15 miles from a grocery store. It is just far enough where shopping trips require planning. Grandma is truly rural and is 30 miles from the nearest grocery store. “Going into town” is a weekly Saturday day trip.

It is absolutely not normal to drive three hours to get groceries, no.

I live in the San Fernando Valley, in Los Angeles, and I can hit a grocery store in any direction in less than one mile. We are ripe for choice here.

No, that’s not common and would only happen in rural areas or possibly food deserts in urban areas. I have two grocery stores within 2 miles of my home and it takes me 5 minutes to drive there. Sometimes I’ll drive 12-15 minutes to other stores if I want something only that store carries.

I don’t. We either have it delivered or walk to the store.

I don't own a car. I walk to the nearest store, about 20 minutes.

About 3 miles (5km) round trip In my hometown it was about 10 miles (16km) round trip. An hour to groceries is it normal but definitely not unheard of.

I live "out in the country" so I drive 20-30 minutes. I don't know how many miles that is because where I'm from we relate distance to time and not miles/kilometers.

I live in a city and have a Trader Joe’s, Harris Teeter, and Whole Foods all within a 10 minute walk. I grew up in the country though. We had a Safeway 8 or so miles away but there was no traffic so it was a short drive
