Why is cheddar the UK's number 1 cheese?

I do like me some cheese but it really annoys me when I walk into the supermarket and half the cheese isle is just rows upon rows of different types of cheddar, some red Leicester if i'm lucky and i might see something from another country if the supermarket is feeling exotic.

Is Cheddar the UK's favourite cheese by choice or by force? maybe the sales are so high because the supermarkets stock little else!

Just wanted to rant.
thanks.
