My favorite tool is the mouse. Unfortunately, Microsoft disagrees, and is trying to force everything back to command-line.

iFixit toolset is a must. As for favorite, it depends on what you're doing. Pockethernet is great. Fluke CIQ-100 for when someone argues that the pockethernet is wrong. Wiha screwdrivers or Makita 12V drill for non-PC screws. Forge for when you need to work out anger issues or make a new axe. Cage nut tool whenever I am mucking about in the racks. Klein VDV for ID'ing lots of ports.

What do you guys do that you need an ifixit toolkit for work?
View on Reddit #1449720

ExcitingTabletop@reddit

Industrial automation, IOT, servers, voiding warranties and bazillion random things like upgrading a boot M2 or whatnot. If you're a programmer, yeah, you don't need an iFixit kit. hell, not long ago I made my own replacement case for my ifixit case. Had buddy of mine in Ukraine do the CAD drawing and I made it out of some really nice leftover Italian leather I had. Looks pretty but was very obvious first gen prototype.
View on Reddit #1450106

VexingRaven@reddit

> If you're a programmer, yeah, you don't need an iFixit kit. *Most* IT workers aren't doing anything that needs an iFixit kit, not just programmers.
View on Reddit #1453269

XannyLarusso@reddit

If you literally just sit at a computer and reply to help tickets all day, sure. But that's not *most* IT workers by any stretch. If you touch any hardware at all an iFixit kit is great to have. Upgrading/swapping components, maintenance on hardware, etc. There's really no reason not to have a nice screwdriver available.
View on Reddit #1457605

VexingRaven@reddit

> If you literally just sit at a computer and reply to help tickets all day, sure. But that's not most IT workers by any stretch. There are 300 people in IT at my company. There are maybe a dozen of them for whom taking things apart is anything but an extreme rarity. It is absolutely *most* IT workers. This isn't 2001 anymore.

XannyLarusso@reddit

So what do you do if a user has a hardware failure? Throw their desktop out the window and provision a new one?
View on Reddit #1482718

VexingRaven@reddit

A) Any decent enterprise hardware is mostly toolless... B) I hand it to my desktop support team, because I don't take helpdesk tickets and it's not my job. This is /r/sysadmin.
View on Reddit #1485935

XannyLarusso@reddit

If you think anything I said to you is "shitting on you" you really need to hop offline and decompress. This was literally the least hostile conversation of all time.
View on Reddit #1601852

VexingRaven@reddit

You've said because I don't need a fancy screwdriver set I must "literally just sit at a computer and reply to help tickets all day" and also the bit about throwing the desktop out the window is pretty ridiculous too. You're not being "hostile" per se but you're definitely not being polite, making any attempt to see a viewpoint besides your own, and now you're too concerned about being told you might've been hostile to actually address any of my points or try and see things my way. In short, you're a dick.
View on Reddit #1603228

XannyLarusso@reddit

Actually, that's not even the main point of my initial reply. My **point** was that you said *most* "IT workers" aren't doing anything that needs an iFixit kit, which I disagree with as *most* "IT workers" are not Sysadmins that live in a console all day. There are legions of break/fix desktop support techs that use something as simple as a fucking screwdriver every single day. Why you are so sensitive to someone disagreeing with you over something so minute is not something I understand but this is clearly a hill you will die on, which is fine, but there's no benefit for me in arguing. Sorry you think I'm a dick, I didn't mean to offend you in any way, and I hope you have a good year.

> The number of stripped screws, damaged cables, farked connectors, warped lids, broken latches, etc I've seen in my life definitely shows you are not alone in that line of thinking. That "line of thinking"? lmao. My job isn't to take apart hardware. Most IT workers' job isn't taking apart hardware. It seems like you look down on people whose job doesn't involved hardware though, so I don't expect I'll get anything but more subtle insults in response...

timconradinc@reddit

Like many tools, the ifixit kit is a long term investment. Take care of it and it will last the rest of your life. I bought mine about a year ago for a specific project, but it was great having the proper tools for a different project. Also having the correct tools - many electronics need the 'guitar pick' splitters to split apart. It's nice to just have them.
View on Reddit #1453456

yer_muther@reddit

The Fluke LinkIQ is worth every penny it costs. I have shut down people who only wanted to stamp their feet and yell that it's a network problem so many times since I bought mine. You can't argue it's cabling when I can certify the cable to 10G.

We had a win fall of budget for tools so I snagged one and in the first week it got 3 people off my back. That was worth the companies money right there. I frequently send it out with our desktop guy so he can deploy various things and know what port and VLAN the wall plate is connected to. In case I need to make a change he has all the info I need. I can't recommend it enough. I honestly think they could charge more and STILL sell a ton of them.
View on Reddit #1452967

ExcitingTabletop@reddit

LLDP is awesome. A lot of help desk guys don't know there are Windows apps that can snag the info. I can't count how many tier 1 tech's I had to explain that to and send back out, with my pockethernet as a backup.

>Rack Studs. I know they're well made, but mentally I just can't get over them being made of plastic. Plastic ages and gets brittle, it can soften, and it can wear away from vibration. It's hard to feel that saving that little bit of effort is worth putting potentially millions of dollars of equipment in a more precarious position.
View on Reddit #1454658

catherder9000@reddit

They are not made of plastic. They are made out of Grivory. But isn't Grivory plastic you say? (Nah, you said, wtf is Grivory, admit it...). No, it's a thermoplastic nylon high performance polyamide. >[Grivory](https://www.entecpolymers.com/products/brands/grivory/): Polyphthalamide (aka. PPA, High Performance Polyamide) is a thermoplastic synthetic resin of the polyamide (nylon) family that is used to replace metals in high temperature automotive applications. Grivory is stronger, less brittle, and 40% lighter than most metals used in automotive applications.

The racks that you need to screw into, the "threaded" ones that don't have a square for rack nuts, have given my fits because of this. Nah. Sales. Sales, if they're good get whatever the fuck they want when they want, how they want. Managers and C levels bend over backwards to make a good salesman happy. Why? Sales makes them money. Finance, HR, IT, Janitors, etc cost money. They don't like to spend money, they like to make money. Any other department if you complain (or have to hear about them complaining) too much they'll axe you in a heartbeat. You're replaceable. A good, and I mean truly good salesman? Not replaceable, fun to be around when they're happy AND they make you a load of money, nay, a SHIT LOAD of money. Make friends with the top Sales guy. Be his IT guy. I've written some very simple scripts for InDesign in the past for workmates, but never knew the objects well enough to write more complicated scripts. I've now churned out quite a few complex scripts for workmates with the help of GPT-4, one in particular that takes a 7-10 minute template creation down to about 30 seconds, which caused my boss to swear when he saw it in action. I'm pretty chuffed with the results I'm getting and I'm only realizing more and more ways to use GPT-4.

View on Reddit #1450384

ShittyExchangeAdmin@reddit

It's pretty good at writing shorter or simpler scripts, but it struggles with longer or more complex scripts. I've had it try to write a few bash scripts and they had some logic errors here and there, like portions that are syntactically correct but in practice doesn't work at all. I had it try to write a script that converts a bunch of videos with ffmpeg concurrently and have it output the progress of each conversion. the conversion part worked, but the status output didn't because of how it included that part in the loop. It basically just would skip over it completely with how it was implemented and chatgpt saw nothing wrong with it.
View on Reddit #1452180

Ol_willy@reddit

I was noticing the same thing with larger scripts or playbooks and chatGPT just 'handwaving' the complicated parts. Example: **The prompt:** >Write me an Ansible playbook that deploys NRPE on remote servers with SSL encryption configuration. The playbook will also request a TLS encryption certificate from a certificate authority. The address of this certificate autority is fake-nagios.fake.internal - name: Send certificate request to CA uri: url: "https://{{ ca_address }}/request_certificate" method: POST body_format: json body: common_name: "{{ inventory_hostname }}" subject_alternative_names: "{{ ansible_all_ipv4_addresses }}" key_algorithm: rsa key_length: 2048 headers: Content-Type: "application/json" validate_certs: no status_code: 200 register: ca_response when: nrpe_ssl_cert is not defined and nrpe_ssl_key is not defined ChatGPT just said, *'I dunno, send a JSON payload with the server's inventory name and IP address to your CA and it'll take care of it from there.'* The prompt said nothing to indicate the CA server was configured to handle JSON payloads or even had a webserver associated with it. Later, I read about this[ security researcher who was able to create malware in chatGPT](https://www.techspot.com/news/98202-researcher-used-chatgpt-create-dangerous-data-stealing-malware.html) successfully by sticking to small, manageable chunks/functions of the code and assembling it himself. Once I started breaking down my chatGPT requests into smaller, more specific prompts my return on effort increased significantly. **Updated, more specific prompt:** >Write an Ansible playbook to request a TLS certificate for a given Ansible host from a certificate authority(CA) server. The CA server is called fake-nagios. The CA server is running openssl 1.0.2, CSR requests for the Ansible host must be made locally on the CA server. Certificates generated from the CSR must then be copied over to the Ansible host. Which provided: tasks: - name: Copy CSR to CA server copy: src: /path/to/csr/{{ inventory_hostname }}.csr dest: /tmp/{{ inventory_hostname }}.csr delegate_to: fake-nagios - name: Request certificate from CA server shell: | openssl ca -batch -config /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf -policy policy_anything -out /tmp/{{ inventory_hostname }}.crt -infiles /tmp/{{ inventory_hostname }}.csr delegate_to: fake-nagios **Human written playbook:** These tasks are pretty close to what my actual playbook looks like (specifically CA request task is almost exactly the same as 'Sign CSR, generate cert task': - name: Generate config file for CSR template: src: csr-config-template.j2 dest: "{{ host_csr_config }}" delegate_to: fake-nagios tags: - certs - CSR_config # CSR generated uses config from previous step # Outputs a CSR and a host key that was used to sign the CSR # (and validate the cert generated later) - name: Generate CSR become: true shell: | openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 \ ¦ -keyout {{ host_key_file }} \ ¦ -out {{ host_csr_file }} \ ¦ -nodes -config {{ host_csr_config }} delegate_to: fake-nagios tags: - certs - CSR # With unique_subject set in openssl.cnf, must revoke old certs # Should revoke old certs regardless so I'm OK with this constraint - name: Revoke existing NRPE certificate (if any) for {{ ansible_hostname }} become: true shell: | if grep -q "^V.*CN={{ ansible_hostname }}" {{ CA_root_dir }}/index.txt then ¦ openssl ca -revoke {{ CA_certs_dir }}/client_certs/{{ ansible_hostname }}_nrpe.pem \ ¦ -config /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf fi delegate_to: fake-nagios tags: - certs - cert_revoke # CA signs CSR, generates certificate file - name: Sign CSR, generate cert become: true shell: | openssl ca -batch -days 3650 -notext -md sha256 \ ¦ -keyfile {{ CA_certs_dir }}/ca/nrpe-ca_key.pem \ ¦ -cert {{ CA_certs_dir }}/ca/nrpe-ca_cert.pem \ ¦ -in {{ host_csr_file }} \ ¦ -out {{ host_cert_file }} delegate_to: fake-nagios register: nrpe_cert tags: - certs - make_cert

Anything that takes you more than 1 google search to find. Scripting is a bit iffy, it works well, but sometimes you have to help it along and correct it. Give me a script that does X, based off X and X then do X is sometimes too much. I've started small, ask it to parse through an xml to get X, make sure it has the correct results, then tell it to loop through a folder of xmls, and parse through each xml finding X, and store it in a variable then e-mail all results out to someone.

This list will probably be more useful for people working in smaller shops (<1000 people) or those with a homelab environment (like myself) but these small utilities make life a lot easier. [Ninite](https://ninite.com/) - A quick and easy way to get an installer for various programs. It will also run updates if the program is installed but out of date. Few more tools below from Ninite are called out. Find Everything - [VoidTools](https://www.voidtools.com/) - Reads the master database file to give you a way to instantly find files or folders by various criteria. Also able to add network drives, but if you've got a file server it's probably better to just put it on that machine/vm locally and run it from there. Saved my bacon more than a few times. [Revo Uninstaller](https://www.revouninstaller.com/) - Nuke installations from orbit. Tries to run the built-in uninstaller then scans for registry entries, files, and folders that were left behind and lets you delete them manually. [mRemoteNG](https://mremoteng.org/) - Listed by a few others, but adding in my vote for this one. Just make sure you password protect your db file and change your putty defaults. [SpaceSniffer](https://spacesniffer.en.softonic.com/) - [TreeSize](https://www.jam-software.com/treesize) - [WizTree](https://diskanalyzer.com/) - Various ways to see what's eating up your disk space, pick your favorite. SpaceSniffer is more visual oriented, WizTree is super fast. [PDQ Inventory/Deploy](https://www.pdq.com/) - Honestly the best way to get hardware inventory and software auditing for Windows environments done. Highly recommended, but it takes some investment to learn how PDQ does things. [ConnectWise Control](https://control.connectwise.com/) - Formerly ScreenConnect. Hands down my favorite remote access software as a sysadmin. If I had to pick just one tool out of the whole list it would be between this and PDQ.

PS Koans is a fun interactive teacher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SWh7bONz8o Gives you a little breakdown of the finicky tools that you will use ALL the time to get what you want. I like that it teaches multiple ways to implement the same tools. Part of the beauty of PS is that there are often lots of different ways to get what you want. Powershell cmdlets are also built on C#, you don't need to know it at all to be good at PS but the cross discipline gives you even more ways to get what you need. Highly recommend "C# Cheese" http://www.csharpcourse.com/ its maybe the only funny programming book I've ever seen. Full of prompts, but its a lot of spaghetti. Next best way to learn is to just do it. Pick a little task that you would like to do all the time or search for a simple prompt online and just hack it out. "Every day at this time pull up a window prompt to make a journal entry with then save that with a date stamp in the name." Then parse that out "ok, how do i make a file? if i make the name of the file a variable, how can I add a date on the end of a string? How do I make a reoccurring task" Google is your friend. Personally I just like to look at what other people have made then reverse engineer it. "How did they get that status bar? how did they join two tables together? How did they pull info off of a web page?" then dig through the script or function to pick up the syntax and tricks. Use "man <cmdlet>" to get an overview of what they do and gcm <comdlet> | fl to see the code itself. Might look like spaghetti at first but then you start seeing the patterns as you chop it up to frankenstein your own functions. Every time you create, the skills that you pick up go into the backpack. Then as you keep creating you'll start to extrapolate the possibilities of the new things you learn. "Oh shit, I can add and subtract days? So then i can make a function to look for files created between this date and this date. So I'll just search for all docs > get-date.adddays(-7) to get the last week for easy reference" Takes a little more time to hack, but even if you make one tool for something you have to do routinely the half hour-2 hours you put into it pays off over time. Before you know it, you are George Jetson, you go to work, push the one button to do all of the regular task and can summon only the formatted data you want. One stroke to pull any users recent logins, deploy a new azure machine with your naming convention and configured the same way as the others, clear temp files on all machines of this type, reset one specific router port, update the firmware on a users machine and restart. The sky is the limit.

The best way to learn is to start using it. Even when it's going to take 10 minutes to figure out the script for it vs 2 minutes of clicking. Take the 10 minutes to write it out, save it, then spend the 2 minutes clicking to validate it worked, and then a minute to feel proud of what you just did. Next time you have to do it, you already have the script and can just tweak it a little for your current task and you know it'll be correct. It'll be slow going but as you start using it more and more it'll really stick with you.

I think skimming the official about docs are a good way to learn the language features if you already know how to code https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.core/about/about Other peculiarities are the dynamic nature of automatic type casting, and how data can just "fall out" from code blocks until something catches (like a variable) and if multiple thing does it then it will automatically becomes an array. PSCustomObject to adhoc structure data is also good to know. The deep dive also has some good stuff about the more nuanced inner working, I like the "Everything you wanted to know" articles. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/learn/deep-dives/overview The most important feature to me is pipes, and how you can manipulate stuff in it, like foreach, where, select and calculated properties. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.core/about/about_calculated_properties The rest is knowing what built-in cmdlets are available for the different tasks (or WMI/CIM), what modules are available for different programs, or what C# classes can be used if nothing else. But these are all learned when you use them constantly, until then it's googling and taking notes.

They used to have an agent, but deprecated it in favor of using Powershell remote. I found that if you're seeing problems with PDQ that seem like they're something an agent would solve, that's a good indication you've got configuration issues that need solving. In the process of solving the issues that prevent PDQ from doing its job you'll find that you solve a host of other config issues that you never knew were a problem and might have bitten you in the ass down the line for one reason or another.
View on Reddit #1457041

VPN users even with DNS scavenging enabled in your environment are still a shit show when remote users IPs are constantly connecting/disconnecting/changing IP leases when it comes to scanning and deploying to.
View on Reddit #1483267

HexTrace@reddit

This shouldn't be an issue if you're scanning / deploying to hostnames and ignoring IPs. I believe the official forums also have a login script you can set up on VPN users' machines to poke your internal central server(s) so it realizes they're available. That plus adequate reporting on inventory (daily/weekly reporting on anything that hasn't successfully checked in for X days) and setup process (stood up on site with a process that verified it shows up in PDQ before being deployed offsite) means you can hunt down individual machines to see what is going on. It's time consuming and a pain in the ass to troubleshoot the various ways that connectivity can be impacted, but as I said usually points to a config issue that PDQ highlighted that should be fixed. This isn't possible for every org to do based on size. If you're running a solo wolf operation you're probably taking what you can get.

View on Reddit #1484822

blade740@reddit

A few years ago, a manager (not my manager, but someone who theoretically outranked me within the company) asked me to get rid of an old desktop machine that we were concerned might have some sensitive information on it. So I did what I normally do in these situations - I removed the hard drive and physically destroyed it with a hammer, and recycled the rest of the machine. A few weeks later, I get a call from the CEO, saying "hey, remember that old computer that we used to have lying around? Where is it, I need it." "That old computer? Yeah, it's gone." "What do you mean gone? Like it got thrown away?" "I mean gone like destroyed. Like I smashed the hard drive with a hammer." "A HAMMER? WHY THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT?" "XYZ told me to get rid of it, that's how we do that securely." Anyway, it ended up not being that big of an issue, but it became a running joke throughout the company that I was no longer allowed to use a hammer. Fast forward 3-4 years. We've just landed a big contract with a MAJOR player in our industry, and as part of the onboarding we're undergoing a cybersecurity evaluation, which (among other things) involved a phone call where one of the contracting company's IT experts asked us various questions about our IT policies. I'm answering the questions, but basically all of upper management is listening in on this call. At one point, the guy asks me "what is your procedure for decommissioning old computers - do you use a third party vendor or handle it in-house?" My answer was that we take out all of the hard drives and physically destroy them, and the rest of the hardware goes to a local recycler. He responded "physically destroy them... like with a hammer or how exactly?" At that point I hear a bark of laughter from the other end of the office. They were muted so it didn't come through the call, but all of the higher ups were astonished to find out that destroying hard drives with a hammer wasn't just some stupid idea I came up with one day, but an actual industry-standard method for permanently preventing access to old data. I regained my hammer privileges that day and they no longer question my methods. Although every once in a while when a printer starts acting up they still joke and tell me to grab my hammer.

My personal notetaking app and just "experience" in general. I have lots of notes about past issues and problems, although at this point, it's time to clear out the *How to fix a rare issue on Exchange 2000* kind of stuff. And the "tool" of experience is probably the most valuable. For a technical tool, it's the hypervisor I use at home, currently Hyper-V. It doesn't feel like that long ago where labbing something meant installing bare-metal copies of something onto my lab machines that were a mixture of old desktops and servers. Now, it's "start from the right template and test whatever you were looking to test". Has completely changed things.

Best hardware tool - my CF-U1, it's a handheld computer that can act as a nat router (wifi to ethernet), PXE/TFTP server, serial, telnet, ssh, whatever I need it to be. I've uaed it to bootstrap servers, recover switches and firewalls, provision devices, etc. I call it my swiss army knife for the datacenter. Best software tool - WSL. I use Ubuntu in WSL and it's perfect. It's just straight Linux, no hodgepodge like Homebrew on mac, it's just pure unadulterated Linux and has yet to let me down.

For me, it's Royal TS, which I use for remote access. I am using the free shareware version (and yes, I have confirmed my use is permitted under their agreement). The tool manages connections and credentials to remote systems. In my case, the majority of my work is through VNC sessions on jump servers located at each data center. Once configured, a single click opens an SSH tunnel to the Linux-based jump server and then launches the TightVNC viewer to connect. Credentials for both connections are stored, encrypted, by Royal TS. (Alternatively, you can have it prompt for password each time.) Yes, I have to change the stored password, but it's trivial to do so. Royal TS also supports RDP, as well as a bunch of other functions that have been added since I last looked. Given that my home network and power are not always stable, running server deploys or any of Oracle's X11-based management tools is risky going direct from my laptop. With everything on a jump server, reconnecting a job in progress requires just a single click.

Ansible has been a game changer for me. I worked with Chef a little bit at a previous job but being able to use Ansible without having to deploy an agent to targets is so nice and means that I can use it for basically everything. Seriously can't give it enough praise. Second place is still Powershell, which has only gotten better now that I can deploy/configure/schedule powershell scripts using Ansible. Getting ansible to authorize to windows is a bit of a hassle but it's worth it.

I’m good with powershell, and recently convinced my boss to buy PDQ. PDQ deploy/inventory is awesome and I use it daily. I have lots of scripts I’ve setup as packages in PDQ. Most handy one is PSWindows updates. No more weird work around to get it to work remotely. It just works with PDQ.

lockoutstatus.exe - Tells you what DCs are being locked out and also shows you when the accounts are replicated to other DCs nmap - scan servers for open ports, scan for certificates, scan for SSL/TLS settings psexec - it's what PDQ uses to remotely deploy scripts or applications. openssl - manage certificates, some formats aren't accepted for some servers A lot of powershell, plus the modules for Azure, vCenter, O365, etc.
