What happens to a street disabled parking bay if the homeowner moves?

A super random question which came up today, spinning out of discussing the nightmares of street parking and no one could find out the answer. Say a homeowner has a disabled parking bay on the road for street parking. Then they move house, obviously they'd apply for a new bay on their new road. What happens to the bay at their old house? Do the council come and erase it, or leave it there and just not repaint it the next time the road is resurfaced?

I live in a terraced house & parking anywhere near yr home especially if you finish work at 10pm is very rare. I have knew neighbours who have applied for disabled parking..there are marks that have been put on the curb ready for it but these markings do not start with the edge of thier property, they start at least a meter in from the line of thier property & are at least 2 meters across the front of my property.!! Is this allowed or can I appeal against it ??

Somerset - disabled residents have to pay to get a bay painted outside their house! BUT, even though you pay for it you do not have exclusive right to it! Anyone with a valid blue badge may legally use it and it is very difficult to get any kind of enforcement if able bodied drivers do not respect it.

I've had this argument with people before..... Although you used to be able to get a dedicated spot, marked specifically for one person, but they don't do that anymore.

Anyone with a blue badge can park in a disabled bay, so even if they didn't move house, there's no guarantee that they'll get to that parking bay first. Where I live they just leave it there.

Could be different if it's a home owner. I live on a council estate where we rent the houses. It would suck if you can't park in front of your own house. I'm doubting my own info now.

Pleased to confirm people who happened to be able to get a mortgage don't get any more street parking rights than anyone else, that would be outrageous. If there are loads of unused disabled bays near your house you could ask the council to consider removing some. The people who paint the bays won't know the users have died, it's not that joined up.

There are 3 such bays on my street. Only one of which actually has legible writing. I'm also led to believe that, unless they are actually marked with a sign, on a pole, the "restriction" is unenforceable. The people who live in the houses next to them guard those spots, yet I've never seen an actual blue badge. Unsure why handicapped people can't get a special plate issued, like they do in the US. Of course, here, they'd need a certificate from DVLA, which they could show to get a special plate. Surely this would cut down on cars being broken into to steal the badges? Of course, it does limit the ability to switch from vehicle to vehicle, but that is when an actual badge could come into play.
