Argentina đ¤ Venezuela
Being fuckup states claiming land against the will of the people residing in it because hundreds of years ago they had a claim
I was not expecting this. The one thing venezuela doesnt lack is oil. I was honestly expecting this vote to be some kind of stunt
Like the brexit vote
...and ended like the brexit vote
Can a venezuelan chime in?
I don't see how you can compare this to the Brexit referendum. Brexit was about the UK withdrawing from a supranational political union, and if you like actually about enhancing the democratic say of the British people about who governs us. It's more mild than the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and fully legitimate in ambition.
Meanwhile Venezuelans have essentially voted to annex the territory of another country, to violate international law, to override the rights of the Guyanese living in their own country. There is no justification for this mindset.
The comparison is thinking the vote would be no, which everyone right is would be, but getting the opposite result instead. That's as deep as it goes.
You're overthinking their comment.
Brazilian here, I was so sure they were doing it as a way to get a "No" vote and renounce the claims (which are really messy) in a non-controversial way, but they're really doing this
I hope this doesn't end in war, but everyone seems to be preparing for it
A war on Guyanaâs jungles would be one of defense alongside a willing populace (and allow for guerilla tactics against the invading Venezuelans)
A war in the west would leave Guyana undefended and allow its jungles to be taken and fortified by the Venezuelans; plus it would be an offensive action with the local populace opposed and willing to fight and use guerilla tactics

>With the election to the Colombian presidency last year of former M-19 guerrilla Gustavo Petro, both a Venezuela and Hamas sympathizer, the U.S. needs to rethink its relationship with Colombia.Â
I intend to survive long enough to read a full coverage of the logistical nightmares involved in that operation. Everything from camo pattern production to vehicle deployment's gonna need massive up scaling and readjustment.
I mean, isn't the most realistic option that they just drop exploding things on the invading army until they decide they'd rather turn around?
I could see Brazilian or other Latin American troops getting involved. I don't think US troops would be necessary
I imagine that would just cause more chaos than itâs worth. Toppling the venezuelan government will cause renewed chaos in south america, and the US doesnât want more refugees and another 20 year war that will last will only end when the US leaves.
TBF. This is the first time in generations if not centuries a polity has openly and directly involved in a decision for going to war. Like. When was the last time this can be said to have happened?
Common sense dictates that it's a suspiciously high number.
Common sense also dictates to look at who we're talking about here.
đ
Could go either way IMHO.
I've read elsewhere that the Essequibo issue is one of the rare things that unite the government and the opposition in Venezuela. It's like the Falklands for the Argentinians.
Considering the situation in Venezuela, I highly doubt the population cares at all about Guyana or annexing it
This whole thing feels fishy tbh, I'm not sure it was "the crowds" on this one

> **Venezuelans have voted overwhelmingly in favour of claiming a disputed oil-rich territory long controlled by neighbouring Guyana.**
>
>
>
> More than 95% approved establishing a new state in Essequibo, officials say.
>
>
>
> Caracas says the region has been part of Venezuela since independence from Spain 200 years ago, but Guyana says it was awarded to what was then British Guiana in the late 19th Century.
>
>
>
> The dispute flared up again in 2015 after a major offshore oil discovery.
>
>
>
> President NicolĂĄs Maduro hailed the referendum result as an "overwhelming victory for 'Yes' throughout Venezuela".
>
>
>
> Essequibo, an area of 159,500 sq km (61,600 sq miles), makes up two thirds of the land controlled by Guyana and is home to around a sixth of its population.
>
>
>
> The status of the region has long been a source of tension between the two neighbours.
>
>
>
> An 1899 ruling by an international arbitral tribunal awarded the territory to Britain, which at the time was the colonial power in Guyana, but in recent decades. successive Venezuelan governments have argued the ruling was unfair.
>
>
>
> In 1966, the year Guyana gained independence, Britain and Venezuela agreed that a commission made up of representatives from Guyana and Venezuela would be set up to revisit the dispute, but six decades later no resolution has been reached.
>
>
>
> The referendum follows the discovery in 2015 of oil in the waters off Essequibo's coast by US oil giant ExxonMobil.
>
>
>
> In 2018, hoping to establish its claim on the territory, Guyana filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that will establish whether the decision of the 1899 tribunal should stand. The ICJ is yet to deliver a ruling.
>
>
>
> Venezuela has not accepted that the ICJ has jurisdiction over this issue, but has so far continued to attend the court's hearings.
>
>
>
> Tensions increased further in September this year, when Guyana held an auction at which oil companies bid for exploration licences in Essequibo waters.
>
>
>
> The referendum asked voters a series of questions, including whether they supported Venezuela's claim over Essequibo and whether they agreed with the government's refusal to accept ICJ jurisdiction.
>
>
>
> They were also asked whether they agreed to "oppose by all means in accordance with the law" Guyana's "unilateral" use of the waters off the territory and if they supported Essequibo's "incorporation into the map of Venezuelan territory".
>
>
>
> All questions were approved by more than 95% of voters, according to the president of the country's electoral authority.
>
>
>
> Guyana has condemned the vote as an aggressive attempt at "annexation", while the ICJ ordered Venezuela on Friday to refrain from any concrete action that may alter the status quo in the Essequibo.
>
>
>
> Critics have also condemned the poll as an attempt by Venezuelan President NicolĂĄs Maduro to whip up nationalist fervour ahead of an election set to take place in 2024.
>
>
>
> It is not yet clear what the Venezuelan government plans to do with the result of the referendum, but any attempt to take the territory by force would spark a strong international backlash.
>
>
>
> Among the most significant could be the re-imposition of US sanctions on Venezuela's oil exports that only began to be eased in October.
