They have pledge drive concerts?

It's been a staple of PBS Pledge Drive programming for decades. Although where I'm at, concert programing still leans much heavier towards Baby Boomer audiences and older.

Ohhhhh…. TV! I’m thinking NPR. I’ve donated to NPR but never PBS. I don’t think outside of Sesame Street as a kid and this strange period in my early 20s when friends would come over on Sunday after a weekend of clubbing and binge drinking and drugging and we’d watch The Lawrence Welk Show and decompress, I’ve never watched PBS. lol wow! I feel so uncultured now.

Heh, a lot of people still get the two mixed up. And as always, your comments are so telling regarding PBS; with rare exceptions, it's almost entirely irrelevant to most people between the ages of about five and 50. It's got some of the very best programming on broadcast television, but it just can't capture and maintain a consistent audience between those two demographics. It's one of the numerous reasons PBS has always struggled financially.

It used to be Lawrence Welk. And I lived for that bubble machine.

And some, maybe *many*, PBS stations still haul out the Lawrence Welk Pledge specials a few times a year, in addition to the year-round weekly episodes.

We get some sort of weirdly edited, best of thing. But it's still entertaining AF

There were also a number of live concert specials recorded by some of the surviving original LW show cast and band members, made years after Welk's death and aired during Pledge drives.

..Who wrote this piece? Giuseppe Verdi. Giuseppe Verdi? That's Joe Green to you and me.

Tenderloins will forever be elevenderloins because of his Inflationary Language bit. “I nined an elevenderloin with my fivk.”

He amazed me how he did it so quickly. I'd have to stop and think about each word.

So i'm rewatching all his stuff, ASAP. I'd completely forgotten about elevenderloins, and I'm stoked to rediscover it all.

One of my favorite radio stations had an all 90’s weekend recently, sponsored by AARP 🙃

Not to mention Elvis Costello and Duran Duran at the grocery store.

My favorite old-school hip-hop show has Chuck D doing a rap PSA about colon cancer screenings.

AuntieEvilops@reddit

Jokes aside about Chuck D being old, I'm very glad that such a recognizable celebrity is bringing attention to screening for colon cancer. It can be a fast and silent killer that few people want to openly talk about.

Chuck D does the radio, Common does TV.

>Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams So.. still old people music? Lauper is 70 and Adams is 64. Pop stars should be in their 20s, not their 60s and 70s.

Hey, they still play Lawrence Welk so give them some credit! Seriously though, I would rather watch Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams on a PBS Pledge Drive than Lawrence Welk or the Smothers Brothers. I'll take what I can get!

It's great that they changed that. I have noticed that grocery stores have also stopped playing old people music.

My 18 year old daughter was conceived during a Grateful Dead PBS pledge drive concert 19 years ago. We got unexpectedly too into the music and I figured we’d be ok for one night without running to the bedroom nightstand drawer. Crazy thing is, she’s very musically talented and has been performing in fairs, bars, boardwalks, coffee shops, and wineries since she was 14. She didn’t return to school after the pandemic and we homeschooled her, focusing intensely on music lessons. She’s now a freshman in college studying music in New Orleans.
