Fellow Gen Xer's-How are we feeling about the remake of "The Color Purple"

It's weird because the trailer really doesn't leave the impression that it's a musical, and it looks so similar to the original, I thought why on earth is this happening? But when I learned that it's an adaptation of the musical, I came around somewhat. The music of the more recent musical is really incredible -- I saw it five times on Broadway because I wanted to go see it with everybody, and I am not rich. That said, I'm sort of confused by what I've read about how this version is supposed to be more true to the book -- maybe I need to read the book again? Definitely didn't have that feeling when I saw it on stage.
