That’s not so bad. Looks like it was stored improperly and left in a leather holster. It it loaded? What’s the goal? How much of a journey do you want? You can go full mad science or mad science light. I’d love to see this in Tier IV Trusty Rusty in the /r/GunnitRust contest. Come see us over there too.

It was left in the open high on top of a bookshelf for many years It’s original from the war So I would like to try to save it and get it working again if possible or at least make it look pretty and save it’s history.

Where did you decide to start?

Sorry for the late reply but I did boil it in water. It looks 10 times better unfortunately though the slide is still stuck I imagine there’s some rust preventing it from going back

That’s for after you get it apart. Grips came off ok? Is it sitting in the oil right now?

Yeah the Grips came off no problem they cleaned up nicely. And it was an oil But not now since I was trying to get the slide to budge

Hey. I was cleaning some car parts and I thought about you. Where did you get to with this project?

It’s the locking block that’s stuck. If it’s unloaded. Getting a dowel in down the barrel and giving it lots of gentle taps might get it open. Wood or brass won’t hurt it.

Bring it into /r/GunnitRust with pictures of the current state and descriptions of what you’ve already tried. I can’t see it but I’d card down the external rust as best I could now and soak it in the oil again. Then I’d probably give that slide a whack or too with a wood dowel and back in the oil. See if I can get it to move. I’d bet the rust has the locking block jammed. Once you get that loose it will be downhill from there.

Let us soak some more and then you can fight with it some more. Do you have any penetrating oil around? My Suhl pinfire was about as stuck as that and the penetrating pil was how I cot the cylinder pin and the gate.

Left on a bookshelf? Like, on a boat or something?

Ok well to preserve finish,if youre going that way, you want to get to where you can degrease, boil in distilled water, oil, and card. That’s a rust blue finish.the material you do the carding with will matter. Something aggressive like steel wool will make it worse. Step one is getting it apart. You can oil soak it and try to get it apart as previously mentioned but that’s not the only way. If the gun is bad enough it might be worth trying the old reverse electrolysis bath. That’s a process. You can practice on something else before you do this piece. Look it up while you’ve got the gun soaking in oil. Make sure you get the grips off if you can. The screws for that look clean. Decent screwdrivers are a big deal. If you go through the past posts on GunnitRust there is some of this work in there.

Boil it in water to convert the rust. Look up rust conversion Mark Novak on YouTube. His channel is a goldmine for conservation. DO NOT USE A BRASS/STEEL BRUSH ON IT! Boiling it can save some of the original finish that brushes can remove.

First thing I'd do is drop a pencil down the bore to make sure there's not a round chambered. Carefully remove the grips, remove the mag if you can, drop the steel into penetrating oil (I like Kroil) and let it soak for a week. If the slide does not work loose, give it another. Once it starts to move, field strip and go from there.

Making sure it was safe was the first thing I did. Does Kroil Run the risk of taking off the original Bluing??

Nope, it won't hurt the finish, but it does have two properties which are really useful - it has an astonishing capacity to soak into tiny spaces, and it will dissolve small rust crystals along with old oils and greases and pretty much anything else. Once you get the gun apart, you'll have various chemical options to stabilize or remove the remaining rust, but all of them (to my knowledge) will remove the remaining finish too. The only effective way I know to remove rust that preserves the finish is brass or bronze wool, I've used it before with good result. If there is rust inside, pay attention to critical bearing surfaces (sears, safeties), springs, and of course the bore and chamber. A pitted bore might or might not shoot pretty well, a rusty chamber might or might not cause extraction problems. If you're lucky, the bulk of the pitting is outside where is just adds character.

> The only effective way I know to remove rust that preserves the finish is brass or bronze wool, ... Just boil it in water. It will convert the rust (red oxide) into black oxide (bluing), then you knock the gunk off with steel wool and soak in a non-detergent oil. This will preserve the remaining bluing while adding a layer of protection to the damaged areas and help even out the look of the finish.
