Although both Dell and HPE have fucked up the signed code on the drive that causes them to freeze after certain dates. Issues that don't exist at all on the equivalent manufacturer drives. Not a Dell issue. The Samsung drive problem was an LSI chipset incompatibility with the Samsung drives. Then there was the batch of ~500 servers where we didn't want to pay the Dell tax on memory, and sourced bulk DIMMs from the distributor directly instead of Dell. Much higher failure rate than what Dell provided the previous and future batches. Although Dell has problems too. Whole batch of servers with bad PERC cards causing crashes and had to replace almost 200 over the course of a year due to a manufacturing problem. That one was not very fun to deal with. Difference being that these were Dell components and we could lean on Dell to fix it versus a distributor who may or may not be able to do much more than just replace from their own inventory, which we found out the hard way that the first batch of replacement cards were bad too. Oops. Again - nothing wrong with third-party components in servers. Just account for the risk or have the luxury of a team to handle replacements/troubleshooting. The Western Digital issue was a firmware-level bug but that wasn't found out until post-mortem investigation was done on them by WD engineering. By then we had already replaced hundreds of the drives with the Dell-certified equivalents.
