Are these still serviceable? I would have thought sanctions have rendered these U/S
midsprat123@reddit
Think I saw something that said most if not all have the wings permanently extended because they don’t have the means of fixing the “sweeping” system
Jaggedmallard26@reddit
It'd why every F14 outside of Iran has had the variable sweep mechanism destroyed. So the Iranians can't somehow restore that functionality.
121guy@reddit
I don’t understand why they would fly an American jet for national pride….
Find_A_Reason@reddit
You wouldn't be proud to still be the only country flying something as cool as an f14 when the most technologically advance and powerful military in the world that invented the plane doesn't even have any flying?
I doubt you could feel shame either.
kickinitatClubB@reddit
It is laughable to think Iran flying Toms is somehow “a poke in the eye.” It’s the same mentality as them blowing up plywood CVNs. In modern combat the Toms would have a VERY short life expectancy. The only real measure is combat effectiveness and it’s not there
121guy@reddit
The most technically advanced powerful military also isn’t flying the P-51 Mustang either. The F-14 was a world class interceptor and struck fear into those in the sky with it in the 80’s and 90’s. It was also a maintenance nightmare and a massive bill to operate.
Find_A_Reason@reddit
And despite being maintenance nightmare and massively expensive to operate, Iran can still operate it.
That is what makes it impressive.
ErrantIndy@reddit
Because it’s a poke in the eye for the US. They’re the only nation that operates the Tomcat anymore, and they’ve made the US WORK to keep any parts from getting to them, and yet they still keep’em flying.
kickinitatClubB@reddit
How is flying an ancient jet a poke? It will have a very short life expectancy in combat
ErrantIndy@reddit
It wasn’t when they first started using them. The Iranians made good use of their Tomcats. But yeah, now, they’re overshadowed, so they’re a diplomatic chip used to taunt the US.
AftyOfTheUK@reddit
I'm not sure flying relix target drones is a poke in the eye for the US. Iran expends significant resources keeping these things flying, which is wasted.
ErrantIndy@reddit
Pride really isn’t a logical thing. To the Iranians, it doesn’t matter the cost as long as they can keep thumbing their nose at the US.
kickinitatClubB@reddit
Nobody cares
121guy@reddit
I guess but that’s like flying a P-51 to show off you can do it. The Tomcat was an amazing airframe (my favorite fighter growing up) but in today’s world it’s outclassed in any fight I can think of.
guynamedjames@reddit
Not true. I watched one score two kills on a fifty generation Iranian fighter and survive a dogfight with a third without any weapons or even flares. There was a whole documentary about it.
Asleep_Horror5300@reddit
That pilot really did some pilot shit to pull it off for sure.
what_in_the_frick@reddit
That’s cause they weren’t thinking, if they thought up there they’d be dead
jiffysdidit@reddit
I’ve watched that documentary several times and I’m pretty sure it was about pilots being more important than the planes
D0D@reddit
I thought it was the pilots love affairs that where most important...
Shantomette@reddit
Yeah, but they had help on the third. I mean we have to be practical here.
coldnebo@reddit
it’s not that, it’s being used as a radar platform. the airframe is useless at this point.
121guy@reddit
This makes sense.
malacovics@reddit
And because they are the only nation to actually get an air to air kill with an AIM-54 Phoenix. And like 90% of air victories are Iranian, not American, with the F-14.
Jahobes@reddit
It's the same energy your annoying little brother uses when he has something you value but you can't beat him up to get it back.
"We have your favorite jet and there is nothing you can do about it na na na na na"
carolinaindian02@reddit
Iran helped finance the F-14 Tomcat when Grumman had financial troubles during the mid-70s, and when Congress rejected loans to the company.
kickinitatClubB@reddit
I am surprised there aren’t more who have noticed and discussed this. It greatly limits top speed
beachsand83@reddit
Completely false. They’re maintained and overhauled, just not upgraded. They’re using Aim-9J, Aim-7E-2 and Aim-54A. Vietnam era weapons. Anyway I have talked to people in iran some with direct contact with tomcats. This is the situation. They’re basically stock Tomcats just overhauled over the years. There are 62 airframes that haven’t been lost in war or crashed… but like 41 serviceable and half that in flying shape.
Over_Information9877@reddit
There is an upgrade program. I am aware that sensors, wiring, cockpit systems have/or can be replaced.
There are photos carrying Russian missiles on upgraded units.
beachsand83@reddit
The Russian missiles on tomcats are photos from the 1990s. They tried to mate the R27 and it was incompatible with the awg-9 radar on the tomcat. It failed. It cannot carry Russian weapons. It can’t use r73 either, they tried that as well. They’re not upgraded, they’re stock tomcats. The parts are reverse engineered and they’re less capable than an early 1980s spec A model American tomcat. I know quite a bit about them I’ve done a lot of research in addition to talking to people there.
Squrton_Cummings@reddit
Of all the system on the F-14 I'm having trouble understanding why the swing wings would be the one that's difficult to maintain. The application is exotic but at its core the system is just a pivot with hydraulic actuators, it's not fundamentally different from any other hydraulic system. It doesn't seem like it would require any parts that would be difficult for any industrialized nation to fabricate.
At most I could see the automatic sweep mode not working if they ran out of spares for the air data computer and couldn't replicate the function with modern hardware for some reason.
yapafrm@reddit
An f-14 weighs 40000 pounds and can pull 7-8 Gs. So that wing pivot must be able to endure all that force and drag when it's doing a high G turn. So uuuh, design a small light weight hydraulic pivot that can sustain two to three hundred thousand pounds of force. Swing wings went out of fashion for a reason.
Replacing a clunky 1970s computer with an Arduino is an easier task.
Squrton_Cummings@reddit
It's still just a hydraulic system designed in the late 1960s. I'm sure the design was marvel of engineering at the time but they don't have to design it from scratch, they just have to copy it. And even Iran has modern materials, CAD and CNC capabilities beyond the original manufacturer's wildest fantasies.
2wheels30@reddit
There's more to copying it than just modeling it in CAD. The process to manufacturer a replacement wingbox likely outweighs the usefulness of enabling the functionality. Why pay millions to build manufacturing to sweep the wings on a 50yo obsolete plane when that same money could buy a few current gen planes.
Squrton_Cummings@reddit
Who said anything about replacing the fucking wingbox? You're strawmanning the shit out of this because you think aircraft hydraulics are fucking magic. Just stop.
2wheels30@reddit
Uh...that was my first and only comment on the matter, but way to be a dick? And the "magic hydraulic" issues Iran has involve the entire wingbox from my understanding. You keep doing you.
WarthogOsl@reddit
I've listened to interviews with Tomcat maintainers who've said that the swing wings weren't particularly difficult to maintain, and that they typically were not typically the source of issues. It's just something people assume.
steampunk691@reddit
One of the parts you’re talking about would be the wing box. From my understanding of it, it’s an electron beam welded titanium structure that was both incredibly difficult to manufacture and also impossible to repair. Every US Tomcat that you can see on display today has had it broken before they went on display. Not only do spares no longer exist and production halted, but the original machinery used to create these parts were also destroyed.
Additionally, the hydraulics were only one part of an incredibly difficult beast to maintain. It’s the largest and heaviest carrier based fighter to be put into commission, and it was made in the 1970s. It’s not like you can hook up a laptop to the plane to diagnose an issue, you’re going to be pulling out panels and inspecting each actuator and hydraulic line while taking multimeters to look over each cable to find issues, not even to mention the fact that it still relied on a mechanical INS to derive positional data for its avionics. It was enough that it was a significant factor in pushing it into retirement.
The commonly quoted figure is 50-60 man hours of maintenance for every hour of flight compared to only 10-15 for the Super Hornet. It wasn’t just a maintenance heavy plane, it was a diva.
CheesecakeMedium8500@reddit
Well these are all swept halfway.
SpecialistVast6840@reddit
Hybrids
Qingdao243@reddit
They may just be narrowly limited in sweep or something of the like. At this angle their flaps would be blocked from extending.
TaskForceCausality@reddit
Yes…and no.
Iran started with 79. Given the embargo and U.S. retirement of the Tomcat in 2006 , Irans made the decision to cannibalize their fleet. Meaning half of the 79 (less losses from accidents and the Iran/Iraq war) are set aside as parts sources, and the other half are flown as operational aircraft. It’s a way to sustain a fleet when new parts aren’t available, but only to a point. It’s not a viable strategy if the aircraft are ever used in war.
TheBigMotherFook@reddit
Also don’t forget the US destroyed its mothballed F-14s because Iran kept stealing parts from them or somehow winding up with them through shady dealings.
Real shame that there won’t be any of these preserved in working order.
maluket@reddit
Yes but I think you are underestimating Iran and it makes a dangerous mindset.
They are producing cruise and ballistic missiles in-house. I guess they can and did reverse-engineer and manufacture Tomcat parts. After all, it is 40 years old technology at this point. They had those warbirds for decades so If they had a few planes to cannibalise for parts, they would have runned out of parts already
Find_A_Reason@reddit
Iran is the only country to achieve an accurate and reliable ballistic missile with a range over 1000 miles before they developed nuclear weapons.
Iran is not a country to take lightly.
F-ingFranz@reddit
They produce more engineers and scientists per capita than any other country

Ramenastern@reddit
Well... Still only to a point as evident by the wings now being locked in the forward position.
crosstherubicon@reddit
My understanding was that wasn't an infrequent feature even with US planes that had undergone all their required maintenance requirements.
Anotherolddog@reddit

Don't forget that the airframe is rated for 6000 hours (later extended to 7000 but I'm not sure what variant Iran has). At some point, no matter what is replaced, the aiframes just aren't airworthy. I'm sure that won't stop Iran though (at least not until that first hard turn)
BusyMountain@reddit
But they don’t use them at sea, and are located in a dry area where humidity isn’t much of a factor.
I think those planes can last longer given the conditions they’re at.
JiveTrain@reddit
This is completely normal even when you have access to parts. Here in Norway, the air force bought 74 F-16 in 1980. At the end of service in 2022, 32 airplanes were airworthy, and sold to Romania. A handful were lost in accidents over the years, the rest were cannibalized for parts to keep the remainder flying.
UnrealisticOcelot@reddit
Isn't it a bit different in the case of Iran though? I imagine most of the airframes that are cannibalized in Norway were done so because of the airframe being past it's serviceable life. In Iran they had to set aside airworthy airframes right?
JiveTrain@reddit
It's a cost/benefit thing i guess. With infinite budgets, you could probably keep every plane flying, but at some point it just doesn't make sense to do so. Like when you get a 10k repair bill on your car that is worth 15, and you can sell the parts for 6k.
July_is_cool@reddit
Except the B-52
Moot72@reddit
I was a C5 FE in the late 90s. We had a jet that was called the "can bird", and it would sit for 30 days or so on the ramp being used for parts. At the end of the 30 days or whatever it was, another jet would take its place and become the can bird.
rearadmiralslow@reddit
I think the cann bird is common at all air wings. Parts are back ordered against it
admiral_sinkenkwiken@reddit
However Iran has become a true master of reverse engineering by necessity.
They actually have a reasonably strong and capable aviation industry that’s largely been spawned out of the need to maintain Western aircraft while being completely cut off from the OEM, they can produce almost all of the parts for the F-14’s ongoing depot level maintenance needs, even completely overhauling the TF30 engines as well as improving and upgrading the weapons system.
At the end of the day they’ve kept a very unique aircraft operational without any OEM support for some 44 years now, that in itself is a huge achievement.
Immortal_Tuttle@reddit
Iran started to manufacture their own spare parts years ago. Number of flight ready aircrafts actually increased. It was met with disbelief and investigation in US that resulted in destroying all but 3 US based F-14 (they were suspecting someone is stealing parts from long storage planes). It occured Iran was able to reverse engineer parts and even develop 3D printing manufacturing process to make some of them.
RostamSurena@reddit
Iran, at this point, is able to manufacture all their own spare parts, while getting raw materials like Titanium, from Russia, electronics for avionics from china, upgrades and replacements for servo motors, and the black market for anything still left floating around, or common aircraft components, and even museums.
The US gave Iran a lot of knowledge and ability to self maintain, but decades of war and sanctions and regional instability have greatly slowed this down.
Iran has yet to build their own tomcat from scratch like they have with the F-5s.
Ramenastern@reddit
Well, only to a point. Note how the wings on their F-14s are now always locked in the forward position because they are unable to maintain the mechanism responsible for moving and then reliably locking them in position.
coredump3d@reddit
It doesn't take immense engineering to design variable sweep wingbox. FWIW Russians have had it for few decades too. And if s plane is accessible, the mechanical components are replicable to large extent with expert help
RostamSurena@reddit
As of now that is an unsubstantiated rumor.
RedStar9117@reddit
Also why the US scraps all the F14s rather than sell them to other possible international buyers
AdAltruistic8875@reddit
What would prevent those buyers from selling to Iran? Also the jets were scrapped/stripped of parts to prevent Iran from stealing parts from aircraft in museums and bone yards to maintain their fleet of tomcats. All choices made when the Tomcat was still a very venerable air to air threat. Tomcat, unlike other US export aircraft was not produced nor ordered in the numbers that would substantiate selling them off to other buyers. Every tomcat airframe that we had, had very high airtime on the airframes and selling them off at the end of their service careers would have been bad since the airframes were a liability.
as1161@reddit
They also smuggle in parts from different dealers
Over_Information9877@reddit
Incorrect. Most parts can be locally produced now.
The real issue is sourcing replacement engines and titanium components. But, titanium parts can be done in Russia
Paul_The_Builder@reddit
I've heard that the swing wing mechanisms on the Iranian F-14s no longer work and the wings are fixed in place.
Anyone know if this is the case or not?
AnnaCarlotta98@reddit
I have read they effectively can't performe maintenance to the point their variable geometry is no more usable...
These are quite old planes, and if they are anything like our aging Tornados, they surely need extra care...

SeedPuller@reddit (OP)
Officially yes. You'll be Muslim by default when you get born (it's even in our birth certificate). So it's not actually possible to say the regime "I'm not a Muslim anymore" (You'll probably be killed). Most of the Iranians are secular. You can just look at the protests that happened last year. Historically, Iranians accepted Islam because they were forced to.
astronomymatt@reddit
Serviceable enough to fly, maybe not by western standards of air safety though.
Pretty sure the wing sweep mechanism is locked out and non functional though.

There was some talk a while back of China helping them produce replacement parts.

Yes, still serviceable because they answered the phone and got one of those extended warranties.
Suspicious-Appeal386@reddit
Once in a while you'll hear about either Chinese Nationals or Russians who was caught buying and shipping F14 parts to Iran.
In 1992 they busted a ring of 8 individuals in San Diego doing just that.
FGonGiveItToYa@reddit
Very unlikely. They've seen 8 years of combat, didn't receive any upgrades for decades and lack parts. I don't think air force is in iran's doctrine anymore. They could get some flankers all these years.
ithappenedone234@reddit
They are supplying aircraft to Russia currently, air power is in their doctrine.
FGonGiveItToYa@reddit
For IRGC, yeah. Drones play a big part. Their air force and army is stuck in the 70s. No signs of strengthening them after what happened to iraqis in gulf war.
SuperFightingRobit@reddit
And they've been making upgraded F-5 clones. Also claiming they invented a "stealth fighter."
nipple_cakes_crunch@reddit
Their “stealth fighter” was hilarious. There was a Reddit post where a couple of aeronautical engineers is picked it apart. The avionics were comical to say the least.
EccentricFox@reddit
To be fair Russia also made the same claim.
SuperFightingRobit@reddit
The Su-57 is at least a real airplane. Had it not been gimped by sanctions and corruption, it'd probably be a fairly capable airplane with a reduced RCS.
The Iranian thing was a drone.
Jaggedmallard26@reddit
You've got to be impressed, a repressive pariah state has a booming export market of modern drones. Although some of it was aided by the captured US drone.

It’s just a short clip, but the handling wasn’t great. The pilots were making some low time control inputs, such as leaning the stick in the direction they were looking before committing to rolling the aircraft. Other brief indications that they may not be comfortable in the aircraft and/or there are control issues
Short-Respect7787@reddit
You are wrong sir ,tomcat has a heavy hydraulic system and pilots must do manures carefully because the old tf-30S have turbulent and compressor stall issues
Whateverstillgoing@reddit
That is incorrect. Nothing in that clip is related to those factors. Although poor maintenance may affect the sloppiness of the control response, to poor handling, or to be generous slow under confident control inputs, is pilot related. As far as compressor stalls, they would not be a factor in the station keeping and roll maneuvers features. The compressor stall onsets were related to other parts of the flight envelope such low speed cross controlled maneuvers.
DutchOven88@reddit
To any aviation professionals- do these pilots seem “shakey” or non-committal to the movements. Seems like the coordination is way off

Yes indeed look at me, questioning what I’m seeing instead of blindly believing everything that’s fed to me. I love the F14 more than most trust me, but this video proves absolutely nothing about the reality of Iranian F14s happily flying. Ever heard of propaganda? They could be trying to make the US think their fleet is doing fine without them, when in reality it isn’t. To think that the US needed to destroy every example of the most beautiful aircraft in the world just to keep it out of Iran’s hands breaks my heart, so Iran flaunting this kind of video is totally something they would do.
famicom_bkg35@reddit
I've been in Iran and I have seen f14s flying. The f14 isn't threatening anymore.
Holy mother, are you indoctrinated... Go travel the world and see the world with your own eyes.
Also, if it wasn't for corrupt officials and people working at boneyards that exported parts to Iran. We'd have a few flying f14s left.
Had the us never sold f14s to Iran, their fate would have still been the same, pretty much. They were expensive and difficult to maintain.

It’s really a question of munitions, tomcats would never be able to see them
JoshS1@reddit
With the F-35 able to target for ship based munitions it might be possible a single F-35 could cripple their AF. They would know though, their ground based warning systems (SIGINT) would detect the targeting radar of the F-35. They would know approximately what direction it is but distance would need to be done with multiple stations using triangulation. One it's close They would likely be able to track it on radar. Yes, it's stealth but that doesn't automatically means no laws of physics apply, just that it's harder to see.
mspk7305@reddit
yeah but seeing it coming doesnt help you much when you cant do shit about it
co_ordinator@reddit
They have a wide range of SAMs.
mspk7305@reddit
Sure. So does Russia but look at how well that three day operation in Ukraine is going.
ialwaysforgetmename@reddit
But it's possible. I mean, the Yugoslav Army shot down an F-117 through clever tactics and US complacency.
Kozakow54@reddit
It was quite a messy incident, with plenty of factors to take into account.
Not to mention the fact that the F-117 is the first of it's kind. Yeah, it is stealthier then any other plane, but i doubt it's close to F-35 given that the latter one is a culmination of all of the experience MIC got with the previous designs.
CreakingDoor@reddit
And an awful lot of good fortune
fireandlifeincarnate@reddit
I’m not so sure that Iranian SIGINT would detect an F-35. SIGINT is messy stuff—just ask any irl fighter pilot how useful RWRs are—and the 35 has an LPI radar on top of that.
iboreddd@reddit
With BVR, F-35 would defeat 4 before they see it
DL72-Alpha@reddit
Group-think at it's finest. Assumptions kill.
XxX_BobRoss_XxX@reddit
Right, but the radar range on the F-35 is far better than the F-14, they'd be obliterated before they even saw the F-35's.
DL72-Alpha@reddit
Unlike in training, in reality, a missile lock is not an instant kill.
The F-35 can certainly *launch* before the F-14 even knew it was there. But you forget the missile would still be detected when the missile gets in range of the target. There's counter-measures as well as maneuvers that can be done to defeat the missile track.
Benificial-Cucumber@reddit
The missile would only be detected once it goes active, which generally only happens at the very last minute. I know for the AIM-120C this is about 10 seconds from the target, so very little time to react, and I also expect the latest -D variant can probably get even closer than that.
I wouldn't be surprised if the F35 can guide the missile all the way into the target without it ever going active, too.
DL72-Alpha@reddit
More magick boxes. :(
XxX_BobRoss_XxX@reddit
Yeah no totally, the F-14 will just deploy countermeasures it doesn't have and pull maneuvers that no longer work against modern missiles, that'll TOTALLY get the missile of it's ass!
DL72-Alpha@reddit
*shakes Head*
Alrighty then.
hackingdreams@reddit
And that'd be a sane argument to make if missiles hadn't progressed since the 1970s, or even the 1990s when the last Tomcat rolled off the line.
Checking my calendar I see it's 2023 - computing power has doubled more than twenty times over the intervening 30 years, radar has advanced in precision by more than 10x, and missiles like the AIM-120 have been through about five or six generations of revisions, with a kill probability of about 60% against near peer aircraft beyond visual range. That number is going to approach 100% against a fifty year old aircraft with no stealth and as little maneuverability as those old things had compared to modern platforms.
Hell, the F-14's best bet would be to literally turn around and run away as fast as it could, hoping to outrange the thing, except that its antique radar literally wouldn't even be able to see it coming before it was too late to do anything about it.

One F35 couldn’t handle an entire Air Force.
Dooker01@reddit
Maybe two. Regardless, their AF would be decimated.
mspk7305@reddit
depends on how big that force is
ithappenedone234@reddit
Air Force vs Air Force, the F-35 would have initial success, but upon landing at any of the bases in the region, would be hit by Shahab-3’s.

hackingdreams@reddit
It'd be more fun to watch an F-22 and a handful of upgraded F-16s as nothing but missile trucks, but a pair of F-35As could take the 22's role.
Specific_Cat_861@reddit
Its the Pilot , not the plane..
PapaSheev7@reddit
Three F-35s could inflict significant damage to the Iranian Air Force, but they would all be killed in the end, so I guess that makes it a pyrrhic victory for Iran? An entire squadron of F-35s would make mincemeat of Iran's air force, but three F-35s would be nowhere near enough to defeat Iran, let alone just one.
Apitts87@reddit
Shoot a two ship of F-15EX with that badass giant radar and 24 AAMRAMs. They might be able to shoot down their entire fleet in a Beyond visual range type fight.
Falaflewaffle@reddit
When the AIM-260 JATM enters service it will be even less of an even fight. The entire Iranian airforce will get the operation praying mantis treatment that their navy received.

likeits2055@reddit
not willingly no we didn't, if iran would stop trying to take our parts they'd be fine-ish😦
famicom_bkg35@reddit
The us gave them the tomcats in the first place.
The us retired and destroyed them, not Iran.
Iran didn't try to invade the us to get tomcat spares, corrupt officials and people that work at boneyards exported parts to Iran. For huge amounts of money.
The tomcat was also extremely expensive and time consuming to maintain.
I really hope you are just a 14 year old war thunder player. And not a indoctrinated adult
likeits2055@reddit
Sure, the usn did it themselves and we gave the shah tomcats but they influenced the decision to scrap all the remaining tomcats. Secondly, I'm not a kid or indoctrinated, it's just sad that none of ours will ever fly again because of Iran's f-14s. When we sold them to Iran, it was under a different regime and things have changed since then. How am I indoctrinated?? lmao
famicom_bkg35@reddit
You are one of those people, that think that the outside world is responsible for all of our problems.

These pilots are scared to death. You can tell from their hesitancy to commit to their turns and the haphazard way they break formation. IFR probe stuck open, wings not swept back, glove vanes inop and zero missile rails installed. These are some sad looking tomcats. Probably using aux hydraulics for landing gear only and ram air for power. (VF-102 ‘84-88)
XAoiCamiFluoriteX@reddit
As much as I oppose Iran, I think it is a testament to their resourcefulness that they have been able to keep their F-14s and F-4s in service all these decades.

I think they are the only nation apart from the US to field them.
Mr_OP_Potato_777@reddit

Boundish91@reddit
Such a great bird. Shame there are no flight worthy examples outside Iran.
Jaggedmallard26@reddit
Iran is the entire reason there's no flight worthy tomcats left outside of Iran, the USAF put a drill through the variable sweep mechanism on every Tomcat outside of Iran when they retired them purely so the Iranians couldn't replace the broken mechanisms on theirs.
famicom_bkg35@reddit
Some sweep mechanisms were also irreparably cut up, some even blow torched up

Tuba-kunt@reddit
FUCK dude. I literally poke fun at my dad for thinking DCS is real. Now I've fallen for it myself. Full circle. Goddamn it😭😭
TheAtomicDog@reddit
Actually, I good chance I am wrong. I do not think it is real, but it is probably not DCS. It may be a CG render. I think so because I strongly doubt that Iran has more than 1 or 2 of these things flying.
ill_kill_your_wife@reddit
why would they make them fly so shakey in the render tho?
Tuba-kunt@reddit
At this point I'm getting thrown around the fence. It really does look real, and I want to believe it's real, so I guess it is? I want to hear more people's thoughts on it
SeedPuller@reddit (OP)
They have a lot more.
A_Tiger_in_Africa@reddit
No chance. DCS pilots are way better at flying formation than these gomers.
Roastmaster_666@reddit
That is not DCS. I play a lot of DCS and even at max graphics the sim doesn‘t look that good.
TheAtomicDog@reddit
Yeah, you may be right. I watched it a few times. But I would guess its a CG render. I have not seen more than 1 F-14 flying at a time in a few years and now they have a bunch of them up? Doubt. Except for the taxiing there is no other footage of more than 1 and that shot is quite short.
Roastmaster_666@reddit
Looks real to me. If it was a render, they wouldn‘t have made them break formation in such an uncoordinated manner. The only way that i think it could be CGI is that they superimposed F14s over different aircraft. Maybe trainers due to the uncoordinated turns.
Tard_Farts82@reddit

Zerocoolx1@reddit
I don’t care that they are obsolete and 1 F-35 could destroy a million of them without even taking off (or something) the look way cooler than the F-35 and to many people are as iconic as a the Spitfire and other great historic planes.
It’s great to see some still in the air for whatever reason.
SeedPuller@reddit (OP)
Apparently not
Sensitive_Yellow_121@reddit
The only Tomcat aces are Iranian. They were mostly used as to coordinate other types of aircraft though, because they had the most powerful radars that Iran had.

Is there a back door switch that allows the US to just turn them off?
Impossible_Art_2600@reddit
The 60s called, they want their planes back lol
Mo_Zen@reddit
Unlikely any of those has a Functional Radar. It's the most difficult for the Iranian's to maintain. Even with the Black Marked there simply isn't the hardware. Also no sleds on the wing racks. These frames are Guns only.

That's a formidable Air Force........ in the 70's
Drenlin@reddit
They still have a very capable air force, by global standards. They don't stack up to the US or China, certainly, but they could feasibly take on most 2nd or 3rd world countries, and several NATO members even.
Drenlin@reddit
They also have a bunch of F-5s, as well as domestically produced jets derived from them.
Rebelpine@reddit
Most of their airforce is American, how can they hate America so much? 😂
FlyByPC@reddit
If I had to fly an American plane older than me that probably hadn't seen a proper C-check since I was in preschool, I'd be biased against us, too.
Feeble_to_face@reddit
On the photos of them on the ground. It looks like they’ve simplified the probe system by just making it a straight pipe with no hydraulic actuation. It seems to be permanently in the extended position.
