so who here had a Super Nintendo or a Sega Genesis back in the 1990s?

I was a Super Nintendo kid, but I have a lot of nostalgia for the Genesis as well. Our first console was actually the Sega Master System. My dad let us pick between the Sega and the Nintendo, and we went with Sega. We didn't know anything about games at that time, but the Master System was this cool black futuristic looking machine, and it came with a black gun that looked like it came out of Tron and 3D glasses. The NES, even to kid me, I must have been in 1st grade at this time, looked childish. The gun was a cartoony orange, and it didn't even have 3D glasses. So we went with the Sega. The Master System was cool, but the games were limited. It didn't do well in America, so games weren't distributed to stores that much. We'd go to a store, and they'd have 3 dozen Nintendo games, and like 6 Sega games, and we already owned 5 of them. My dad played games back then, and he got sick of not being able to find any games to play, so he surprised us one day with the NES without us even asking for it. I loved the NES, too. I played that a lot more than the Master System and we had a lot more games for it. But in the early '90s, being "edgy" was the coolest thing you could be. Mario was lame and safe, he was Mickey Mouse. Sonic was edgy and cool. That Sega marketing worked on me. And while the Genesis was the first time most kids my age had heard of Sega, I was already familiar with them because we had the Master System. So I really wanted the Genesis. But my dad, remembering how hard it was to get Sega games before, was like nope, we're getting the Super Nintendo. And I'm glad we did. The Super Nintendo ended up becoming my favorite console of all time, and Super Mario World is probably my favorite game of all time. And where as we were literally the only people I've ever known to own the Master System, the Genesis/SNES split really was 50/50, at least at the time in America. There were 8 family of kids on my block, actually there were more because we lived right near the elementary school, but 7 of those were kids I was friendly enough with to go to their houses and play. Between the 8 of our houses, 4 had the Super Nintendo, and 4 had the Genesis. And it was the same thing with our cousins when we'd get together. I had 3 families of cousins, and between the 4 of our families, 2 had the Genesis and 2 had the SNES. So I played a lot of Genesis as well, and have nostalgia for games like Sonic. But I definitely prefer the SNES and am glad my Dad went with that console.
