I’ve smashed passenger side, rear light assembly on my car. A new one will take four days to arrive. Can I still drive my car, or what sort of trouble will I be in if I’m stopped by the fuzz?

I was a bit of a clutz last night and coupled with the high winds that unexpectedly moved my gate. I managed to reverse into my gate and destroy my rear light cluster. I’ve ordered a new (used) one, it won’t be here for a few days. I live remote with low, but not zero police presence. What will happen if they stop me if I drive ?

Round here at least 1 car in 10 has a light or three missing, I suspect the police have better things to do. Carry on driving, just make sure you’re sober and not carrying anything you shouldn’t.

I probably watch too many’police interceptor’ programmes, but yes, never give them an excuse to stop you. It’s great when they stop a dealer with all the gear and 6 mobiles plus £3500 in cash because a tail light is out!

Depending on how bad it is, you can buy tape to fix it. It’s like thick sellotape and is for this purpose. I reversed into a wall and broke the cover but not the inside of my rear drivers side light cluster. It has passed 3 MOTs taped together, still on the sand tape (although it does need replacing). From your description I’m guessing tape ain’t gonna fix it. But in case…
