ULPT-Walmart lets you keep items if you do a return in the app and gives you a refund. *not on everything* anyone have any more info on it? I've done it a few times and noticed if I do it too many times (or maybe it's random) it'll stop giving me refunds and tell me to take it to the store.

MrNobodhi@reddit
Yeah lol. Even I'm wondering.
ReapingEcho@reddit
I did this on food items I legit needed to return over the course of June to August. App told me to keep items and refund was sent. Guess what? I was called into the office Tuesday morning 3 hours after clocking in and was terminated for legit returns I needed to do. Told me I was basically stealing from them and it was an integrity issue. Was with company almost 10 years and yes I have an Open Door process going right now over this.
Beatles352@reddit
Bro could you elaborate? Because I'm also a Walmart employee and do this shit all the time. I've worked there a year and a half and literally get free returns on the app every week and say "item is damaged" for stuff shipped to my house and it let's me keep that too. I'd estimate I've gotten about $1,200 worth of free stuff. Last month was my best at $203 free. But how could they fire you or me? The app is the one letting us keep all of it. It's not like we're going into the store stealing it. Or making false returns in the store as employees. Did your managers have something against you? It doesn't even make sense that the customer service on the app would contact your store about it. As you're a customer when making those purchases, not an employee.
ReapingEcho@reddit
I was told by the store manager that the system flagged one of the returns because it was month or two after the purchase and they investigated all my purchases and returns. I think the store and regional had it out for me. My manager loved me. Apparently I heard from a prior coworker that automotive was considered overstaffed at my store already plus I was making $19.30 an hour. Me and lots of others think they found a loophole reason to get rid of me and got me for "integrity" and am no longer rehirable. And one of my prior coworkers I told to about this return thing did her whole receipt a couple days after and got $75 back without having to physically return the stuff. She still currently works there... Their was nothing I could or can do against them as right to work laws and can be terminated for looking at someone wrong. Oh well I'm now with a great company and making $26 an hour with better benefits. Screw Walmart.
Beatles352@reddit
See that's iffy because why would the system flag you for something it allows customers to do in the first place? Which is allow customers to return stuff on the app for up to 90 days. I also did that my first time refunding stuff. Now if it flagged you to delete your account that makes sense. But I don't buy that customer service contacted your managers. I think they made that up or thought of the idea to get you fired. It's not an integrity issue if the app allows it. Now if you were going into the store and trying to return empty boxes like these awful customers, that I'd believe.
Ahh that makes sense. They got creative to get rid of you and save on paying someone almost $20/hr. Yup makes sense. She's still there because you can't get fired for returning stuff on the app. Not without getting unemployment guaranteed. It's like banning a customer from the physical store for doing too many online returns. Makes no sense. But congrats on the new job and fuck Walmart! What do you do now?
ReapingEcho@reddit
My hr manager at my store was apparently surprised at the "fraudulent returns" against me. It was a regional hr manager from another store that did the termination of me. She had like a whole binder full of the returns I did for like 3 months. I also couldn't get unemployment as they said I was terminated for something along the lines of breaking company policies. I'm now a commercial hvac rental technician. Basically if a hospital, school or big buisness ac or heater systems go down we rent out 18 wheeler size units and install them temporarily into their system till they get theirs fixed.
Adorable_Self_1784@reddit
Could you have bought from a marketplace seller and they reported it for some reason?
ReapingEcho@reddit
No, they were all Walmart purchases in store.
Beatles352@reddit
Sorry for the late reply. Just another awful day at Walmart. Anyways...
Yea I'm sure they were surprised as they've never seen or heard of it happening before/it's complete bs. Nothing you did was fraudulent because it can't be proven and the app doesn't require you to prove it before giving you a refund. That's 100% on Walmart, not you.
A regional manager coming into fire a low levels associate? This sounds personal. I've never heard of someone that high up coming into a store to fire someone. Again, you didn't break any company policy so that's bs. Did you file for unemployment and get denied? Or didn't file at all?
That's awesome, glad to see you got a specialized job and are doing much better. That's a good industry too. It'll always be needed and no danger of being replaced by AI anytime soon. Anyways, fuck Walmart and I just stocked up my 6 month supply of paper towels on Wal-Mart's tab in your honor lol. Thanks for the info and congrats!
ReapingEcho@reddit
Yeah filed for unemployment the next day and took them over a month to finally deny it. Yeah I wish I could still do the online returns but everything I try it don't let me anymore unfortunately.
Beatles352@reddit
Honestly the unemployment system is fucked from the start. It's made to screw you over as much as possible. I had a situation 4 years ago. I had to file an appeal and visit the nearest office, which was 40 minutes from me. And my job lied about what I was fired for. Which they do because most people don't appeal the process and sadly just accept the denial as they don't have time/energy to deal with the awful unemployment system. But I hated that job so much I pushed through it just so spite them. Got back pay of 3 months and it was so satisfying.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Walmart lied and wrote down you were fired for "theft", which is 100% not true. And they count on you not filing an appeal because of how awful and time consuming the process is as our government sucks. Anyways, thanks for all the info man. I'll approach my return process a little more cautiously now just in case, that and I wanna quit Walmart asap anyways. Not to mention I also get a bunch of free stuff from Amazon too (prime member). Thanks again.
pjsvndsn@reddit
Doesnāt work anymore. The app is forcing me to take any items back to the store even if I choose the ādamagedā option
Beatles352@reddit
That'll happen sometimes. I usually wait 7-10 days and then blitz through a bunch of stuff and it let's me get a refund for all of it. Of course I know this could change at anytime and my day is probably coming lol.
pjsvndsn@reddit
You wait 7-10 days after you purchase the items? And what do you mean āblitz through a bunch of stuffā ?
Beatles352@reddit
Yea if it doesn't give me an automatic refund then that means the app is saying I've been making too many returns. So I'll wait 7-10 days and then "blitz" through my purchases aka return all the items that have automatic refunds while I was waiting 7-10 days for my account to cool down. Been doing it for over a year now. But of course this could change at anytime. I'm shocked it hasn't already.
pjsvndsn@reddit
I still canāt get it to refund me anything automatically. I canāt even remember the last time I returned anything to Walmart. Itās been years. So if my account is flagged for ātoo many returnsā that would make no sense at all lol
Beatles352@reddit
Do you have Walmart Plus? I believe having it is what makes them more generous with refunds. Same with Amazon Prime. If you have Walmart Plus then just order like a 12 pack of soda as a test and see if it gives you an automatic refund. If not, then yea your account is permanently flagged. But I'm sure my day is coming too. Idc though, I'm gonna ride it til the wheels fall off.
pjsvndsn@reddit
Yes I do have Walmart plus. And I actually donāt think Iāve ever even returned anything to Walmart with this account. I didnāt even start a Walmart account until about a year ago and itās been years since Iāve returned anything to Walmart so thereās no way my account can be flagged for literally nothing lol
So you can only get an automatic refund if you did the pickup option or had them shipped to your house? I honestly donāt mind giving the items back to Walmart as I have no use for them because they didnāt meet my expectations. But but I have severe OCD and theyāre items that my OCD wonāt let me touch anymore lmao (shower curtain and seat cushion). So I was trying to do the return from home option but it didnāt give me that option even though I have Walmart plus. I contacted support and they were of no help at all
ReapingEcho@reddit
Anytime I try it now on my account their's an error and tells me to call some phone number. Pretty sure my account is restricted now since I was terminated for it, lol.
pjsvndsn@reddit
Iāve never even used the app to do returns before so thereās no way I was automatically banned from making returns the moment I signed up lol
CaptN_BeatzOFF@reddit
What dollar amount would u say u returned for this to happen? I feel like I'm gonna be in the same situation after reading this I've had 2 items refunded (and 1 item i disputed with my CC) and was told to keep the items since they were large. one item was $70 and the other was $190 so I'd like to think they wouldn't fire me over a $260 worth of stuff they told me to keep and gave me my money back? Other then that I buy stuff at Walmart almost every day so I have a long list of purchases that I did not try to return so I'm thinking I should be fine? Only reason I googled this was to find out why they were telling me to keep items and giving me refunds since I thought that was odd.
ReapingEcho@reddit
Probably around 70ish in a 3 or 4 month period. They had a whole book on everything I returned through the app so therefore it was an internal investigation.
CaptN_BeatzOFF@reddit
When u say they had a whole book I'm guessing this was alot of little things u did this for? So maybe it was based on how many items u returned and not how much it cost?
ReapingEcho@reddit
Yes, a lot of little things like bread, frozen foods, raviolis, stuff like that. Know idea what flagged the system and for them to look into it.
CaptN_BeatzOFF@reddit
Dang so just $70 bucks? That's crazy. Especially over like 4 months.....figured only ppl doing this on a regular basis were getting flagged!
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
Do you work for the store? How did they know? I'm sorry that happened to you.
ReapingEcho@reddit
Did work for the store in automotive center. Apparently the system flagged my returns because they were up to or longer than a month after purchase. Open door told me yesterday they couldn't reverse the termination and no reason was given. I have an interview Thursday for a better job and career field for hvac at much higher pay so maybe things happen for a reason?
NoIntroduction6950@reddit
Yeah it sucks man sorry to hear just period though I work at customer service and one thing that gets abused more than anything is good returns and they are starting to implement more stuff to prevent it. People will literally order 300 worth of groceries from pickup from an hour before than return just to get cash itās awful itās so much food to be wasted, just to get thrown away
No_Hold_3241@reddit
I've had major issues with Walmart website. Charging the wrong cards than not getting a refund for a month or two later. Then support trying to feed me bs that I ordered from a third party seller at local store for delivery and it's my fault there system is terrible. Meanwhile I've been playing catch up, I do return items for terrible rotten produce. It never seems to mess up in my benefit though... Always in their benefit.Ā
Sad-Objective-8387@reddit
I get my groceries delivered from Walmart and spend a lot of money on that and other things from Walmart. I haven't stepped into their stores in 9 years. If I get rotten fruit or a carton of eggs that has 8 out of 12 broken, they tell me to bring the stuff back to the store. I can get this straightened out in their chat but this is ridiculous and I am tired of having to do that. I think they are taking a chance that customers will just forget it, as I'm doing today. Thanks for listening.
No-Fig-8614@reddit
There is an algorithm that checks the cost of shipping, inspecting, and loss of being a used item that goes into a return transaction. If itās lower than the amount of asking for the item back they will write it off.
This also checks if you are someone who habitually abacuses the system.
Front-Needleworker-9@reddit
walmart refunded me for a riding mower that they flagged as lost. It was like 17 days and I hadn't got it. THEN, I get an email stating if I get it,no need to return the item. Well, today the mower showed up! I didn't even know it was here. I guess the driver just dropped it off and left. I never signed for it as per the agreement. Now what? I already used the refund to buy a mower. What should I do? Its still in the crate outside in my driveway. This is my first time asking for a refund as they usually are prompt.
Front-Needleworker-9@reddit
updated..I just called walmart customer service and they told me to keep the mower,as a gift from them to me! Even though I had been refunded 5 days ago due to the item being lost or missing. I will take the win.
AKleoalltheway0514@reddit
I would keep and sell it for what it's worth ...well a little under of course. This or give ti someone in need? Danate... Really it's yours now so do with it what you will or keep incase your other one breaks.
Front-Needleworker-9@reddit
exactly what I did. About 2 weeks back I sold it for just under what the value was. I would have kept it but my wife has a bunch of medical stuff I had to handle. I can always buy another mower down the road when my other one breaks. Glad I found a buyer, we sure needed the money for the medical bills.
Aedrikor@reddit

Witty_MAGFORMICE_337@reddit

Front-Needleworker-9@reddit
sounds crazy right? But word for word thats what the rep said. True story. I didnt believe it, so I finally contacted someone higher on the food chain at Walmart headquarters and they said keep it. Gave me their name and ref.# so I could document the convo. Im still in disbelief.
Hashwanth-in@reddit
Any idea on
Do you think they ask for shampoo. ($35)
I have tried this but didn't like the smell at all. I don't mind returning for a refund but it's used
ZillakamiSlut@reddit
why did you use it if you didnāt like the smellš just return it if youāre not gonna use itā¦
Front-Needleworker-9@reddit
I think thats what happened also in my case. They viewed the cost of having the item picked up, repackaged, shipped back to the company as too costly and wrote it off. Likely when they reported my mower as missing/lost, they just decided at that point to write it off. I called Walmart customer service AGAIN Tuesday to make darn sure this was the case, and it was confirmed. I asked for a confirmation/ref# to this for my records,in case it comes up later, just to cover my butt. Thats the key,GET A REF# guys. Never take what a customer service rep tells you as gospel. Sometimes they get it wrong, depending who you talk to over the phone. I got 3 different answers from 3 different reps,so thats why I contacted them 1 more time to see why they never came back to pick up the mower like they had told me. Turns out the last rep I spoke to was mistaken and the item was actually deemed a loss. Bottomline, I get to keep it. Document it when you guys talk with a Walmart rep. Its really vital. They do record every chat or conversation you have with them. Get that ref.# no matter what. It will help you. In my case,it was a 2k mower. I didn't want to be wrong, then get a surprise charge on my card or original payment method. They will do that many times unless you get clarity. Just be honest when you talk to them. I found Walmart to be easy to deal with and it helped that I had names and conf.#'s to show them my attempts at returning the lost/missing mower that showed up 5 days after I had been refunded. They apologized to me for the snafu when it went missing and told me I can keep it as it was their fault. I know this was longwinded, but I think its worth the read and might help some of you. God Bless.
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
Well technically I would be just starting the return process. So if they choose to let me keep it then that's on them. They can't prove I'm abusing the system. As a customer I can return things as I please.
theTunkMan@reddit
You can absolutely return things as you please. But youāre not returning them
DailyUpsAndDowns@reddit
It's not always convenient to go to Walmart to return something. Walmart knows this and offers a refund without going to the store. Nothing wrong with doing a return online and getting your money back. Obviously they will know if it is being abused the same name same debit / credit card being used
jeffman1991@reddit
Iām glad they do it because I am genuinely honest person when it comes to stuff like this. Iād hope some of the people that know this donāt abuse the system because youāre just hurting everyone else if you do. I honestly rarely return anything to Walmart. Today I made my first return in like a year and it was $2.00 worth of yogurt that was sour upon opening. Itās literally not worth $2 to return it, but thankfully they did not ask me to return it. In reality, I should be entitled to the $2 without having to jump through hoops to get it, because I was the one who was cheated. Even if it was $2. Itās the principle of the matter.
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
Not returning them because Walmart says I can keep them.
Mirai_Evergarden@reddit
Actually, you canāt just āreturn things as you pleaseā. There is no federal law in the US that requires stores to accept returns. That means itās just a thing many stores do as a good-faith service to keep customers happy. But thatās just it. Itās provided in good-faith. And theyāre allowed to revoke that right at any time they choose, if for example, a person is abusing the system or acting in bad-faith.
All that said, I donāt disapprove of this. You can do similar with Amazon by saying you never got your order, in the cases that they do not provide a picture as proof of delivery. Even if they do, you may be able to claim that itās not your porch. Or even just get approval from their new automated return chat bot.
Dapper-Detail-3771@reddit
You arenāt actually correct in your first paragraph. Returns are part of contract civil law. When a buyer buy something from a store, the store has to have the return policy visible so that a customer knows the contract terms they are entering by buying the product. A store cannot just rescind or change the contract after it has been purchased, they can only do it going forward before on any new purchases. And their bullshit clauses of āwe can deny returns for any time or any reasonā wonāt hold up in actual civil court unless thereās a legitimate reason, or they wouldnāt have settled the civil case in California when they suddenly stopped Covid returns. Furthermore, return policies are regulated in state laws.
ZillakamiSlut@reddit
wel u arenāt the brightest mf go re read contract civil law bc you clearly are missing a few very important key points.. yikes
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
You have a point. With Amazon if you wanted to get a refund for your items you can buy a number of things and say you didn't receive one or two of your items in the box. They will most likely offer a refund or replacement.
depressed_jess@reddit
I find that I usually get to keep clearance items. Oh and always make sure it's sold by Walmart and not a 3rd party, they always want their stuff back.
What I've done is order what I want and then throw in some clearance fillers. If I get to keep em then sweet, if they want them back then no biggie, I just run by the store and return them.
RAWisROLLIE@reddit
I just had a third party item with the "No need to return this item." I bought two identical shirts, but different sizes, with the intention of keeping whichever one fit better and returning the other. Started the return process for the one that didn't fit and got the refund instantly and notification to not return it. This is bonkers to me as I've never heard of this phenomenon before! Also, I don't even want to keep the item!
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
I usually pay with my phone in store. So you have your purchases on your purchase history. That's how I start my return. So you won't just need to with online transactions.
pjsvndsn@reddit
Itās not working. The app is forcing me to take the items back to the store even if I mark them as damaged
girlwgreenis69@reddit
Mark them as Item not received..Iast year I accidentally figured out when ordering from walmart.com with my free Walmart plus subscription that they would refund automatically if I requested a refund. For a little bit it worked no matter what reason I selected.. Than it quit working unless I selected item no received.Cant return a item if you never got it.. However after maybe 10 times or so of doing this, they flagged my card,my address and probably my name..If I order anything online from my address or use the card I used to purchase the items refunded-The order will go through but it's immediately cancelled..Doesn't matter what account it's used from. But oh well it was worth it!
pjsvndsn@reddit
There isn't an option for "item not received"

Doggies1980@reddit
There isn't one other than missing and sometimes it's worked and other not. They'll refund a higher price yet not a $2 item š. Makes just so much sense
needtostopcarbs@reddit
Gonna try that. I returned an online purchase 14 days ago to the store & am still waiting for my refund. They changed the policy. But don't think I will be buying online stuff from them anymore.
pjsvndsn@reddit
I can't even get the return thing to work at all anymore. It's as if Walmart just doesn't accept returns anymore for items you bought on the Walmart app or walmart.com
Cool-Constant-9259@reddit
Why do the employees at the return desk at walmart treat ppl like criminals? They actually like they are giving ppl their own money back. This attitude is really bad for business. I had a bottle of tilex that wouldn't spray and the employee wanted to argue with me. REALLY? All u wanted was to exchange for one that worked. Waste of my time in the first place needing to return this. No apologies or have a nice day, just disgusted attitude. I'm reporting her.

Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
But why? Do you work with Walmart?
ThrownAway38383737@reddit
Why the downvotes? This kid is just asking if I'm bullshitting, which is a fair question of a stranger on the internet.
I do not have any wal-mart specific insider knowledge, but I 've worked in logistics.
Many times it costs more to do the return than the residual value of the product. In food related goods, once the cold chain is broken, such as going out for delivery in a giggers car, the value goes to zero.
If its an honest mistake, it benefits both of us to have you keep/destroy the product. I do not need to invest in processing the return, shipping and disposal, you may get a different flavor of icecream than ordered, but you'll still eat it. Win/win
If on the other hand you keep making "mistakes", that becomes a cost to my business and I will do the needful to dissuade you from further abuses by adding work to the returns process or cancelling your account.

Algorithms work for Walmart. They've got more money than everyone right now and they lose more in theft than everyone else makes it gross revenue. Its very much worth walmarts while to even hire hundreds of humans to watch those returns with human eyes (doubt they do), but they could. One store can lose $1m in mere weeks if theft is really bad. The cost of the tp used daily across walmarts is probably huge.
sadox55@reddit
How do you even do that? I always did return from app and never got a refund while keeping the items...
needtostopcarbs@reddit
Only happened to me once & that was from a Marketplace seller I think for like $6. But I think they changed their policy since December cause back then I returned an item to the store, but did the return on the app, & got a return receipt along with refund within 2 days. 14 days ago I returned the other item, same way, no store return receipt given, and have to call tomorrow if still haven't got my refund. I buy a lot from Walmart (well used to but probably won't anymore) & rarely do returns.
Curious_Age_1027@reddit
Exactly.. but hire and give folks that deserve another chance a second chance and showing their beautiful ambitions. Thank you god
pjsvndsn@reddit
This doesn't work at all anymore. And I've never even done a return through the app or online before so there's no way my account is flagged or anything. No matter what option I select for the reason for return, it still forces me to take the item back to the store, even food items. Either this is a huge glitch that's been going on for weeks now, or Walmart has just gotten a lot stricter with their return policy.
FinancialListen4491@reddit
Iād call them over the phone and talk to someone when doing a refund, a few weeks ago I got groceries delivered and the driver dropped a bottle of Lysol spray and it got on a few bags of my groceries, I called customer service because Iām no longer able to do the chat,(Iām assuming to many online returns and now am flagged) and told them my groceries were damaged and they literally refunded 325$ back to me. I wasnāt expecting it at all! I thought maybe theyād refund a little but not the whole order! I wasnāt complaining thatās for sure!
StarfishandSnowballs@reddit
Nice! Prior to that did you return a lot of stuff with the chat on the app.. ? And did they let you keep the stuff? Asking for a friend lol

I just returned a bunch of bananas and a dented can of vegetables last week. Same transaction. Didnāt have to return either item to get my refund.
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
Yup I've noticed it's mostly food. I try to stick with cold items and produce. Odds are they don't want those back because they have to throw it out anyways. Especially cold food. It also depends on how you label the return. Most items I will state it's damaged or expired. I've returned 40$ worth of food in one transaction and they were all cold items. Got refund and didn't need to take to the store
DecoyMike@reddit
How are you getting cold items? You buy in store and request refund online?
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
Yes. Buy your items in store. Use Walmart pay and you'll receive your receipt digitally. Then you will have your purchase history. When you view your receipt, it will give you an option to start a return.
jeffreywilfong@reddit
It varies wildly. I get delivery and sometimes the produce is old/bad; sometimes they just let you have it, other times they want you to bring it back. I was going to return a $20 leg cramp cream but they told me to keep it, maybe because it was medical related?
Illustrious_Win_388@reddit (OP)
I find that it will depend on what you put the reason for return. But also just mainly do it on food that can perish like produce and cold items. I usually just put damaged or expired. 80 percent it'll tell me to keep the items. But also I don't do too much at a time. Randomly tho I will need to return items like shoes or something else and sometimes it'll tell me to keep it.
