You’re extremely racist.

> Europeans and Asians experience disease, get immunity
> Africans (to my knowledge) and Americans (until much later) don't experience disease, have no immunity
> Europeans give Americans disease, Americans get immunity
> Africans, including women (no immunity) more likely to get it
Logic 101
Reallyso@reddit
Ah yes, that plague immunity. I think you need to spec into necromancer or get a legendary ring for that normally.
Riskypride@reddit
I mean there was plague immunity, the first vaccine ever was from the bubonic plague. One of the most famous doctors of all time invented it when he injected people with a version of the plague that transmitted to cows. This version from the cows was weaker but still was weak to similar antibodies so people who got the injection were saved from the plague
AlteredBagel@reddit
Plague doesn’t have a vaccine it’s treated with antibiotics
Pinkflamingos69@reddit
Bubonic plague has a vaccine, i received it prior to my first deployment
Diarreah_Bukakke@reddit
That was likely anthrax or smallpox
Pinkflamingos69@reddit
I've received the smallpox which were the multiple needlejabs, anthrax was done in a few installments, the bubonic plague vaccine was memorable because it's given in the back of the knee
WhyAmIToxic@reddit
Bruh youre talking nonsense, even the CDC website says there is currently no vaccine for bubonic plague. If someone is at risk of contracting the plague, they are given antibiotics.
Pinkflamingos69@reddit
There absolutely are plague vaccines, the back of the knee is selected because of the lymph nodes, there is no vaccine for pneumonic plague
Riskypride@reddit
That’s not true, google that for a second and tell me what the CDC says. It’s just not widely known about since we don’t have to use it very often, similar to the malaria vaccine
Pablochenko1688@reddit
I thought that was small pox
altousrex@reddit
Yeah this person is wrong but he got the spirit.
The bubonic plague is a bacteria that caused infections from the lymph nodes. As it is a bacteria, there is no way to be completely immune.
Small pox, however, is a virus, and the first vaccine was created from Cow Pox after Me.whatshisname noticed people were immune to small pox after getting cow pox.
In fact, the word vaccine is derived from the word vacca in spanish, or cow.
DiceStrike@reddit
So the first vaccine was 100% natural ?
altousrex@reddit
I mean to start yes. The first vaccine was literally just giving someone a lesser form of disease and stopping the more deadly form.
Think of way back when when someone would get chicken pox and moms would have all the kids get chicken pox lol.
DiceStrike@reddit
Yeah I was banned from FB reminding people the first vaccine was 100% natural
altousrex@reddit
Oh gosh. Tbf while vaccines in this day and age are lab manufactured and such, I would really prefer it that way. There are less risks, side effects, factors.
I am very happy with how vaccines have progressed
Riskypride@reddit
I googled myself to make sure after posting and couldn’t find the info I was looking for so you’re probably right. But I could’ve sworn it was during the plague

Small pox vaccine came from cow pox
Terminator_Puppy@reddit
You're mixing up smallpox and early black plague immunity treatments. What they did was they found people who experienced little to no symptoms from the black plague and swabbed their sores. They would then transfer what they swabbed onto healthy people who became more resistant that way.
Smallpox was treated by a vaccine developed through cowpox.
nuttz0r@reddit
Think you've got mixed up there bro. Edward Jenner created smallpox vaccine from cowpox 350ish years after the plague outbreak (at least the one referred to here).
Riskypride@reddit
Fuck right dude, wrong plague.
NarcissisticCat@reddit
That's a real thing. There is no reason whatsoever the bubonic plague couldn't impart a selective sweep upon the populations exposed to plagues and make surviving populations more resistant.
conqaesador@reddit
According to the CDC lethality rate without treatment is at 70%
IneffablyEffed@reddit
It's a racial perk, obviously
baedling@reddit
If anything, Africans have immunity to more diseases, though at a cost (sickle cell traits arose to mitigate malaria)
Yellowdog727@reddit
Africans did have immunity. They had trade with Asia and Europe unlike the Americas. They also had many old world diseases and disease was a big reason why it wasn't able to be colonized until the 1800s

They have been gradually infecting as far as ancient history with their modern social politic dogshit, they seriously wont ever stop or realize that they are all just insane the way that they think
Theres no way that a left wing scientist who is good with the medical sphere and statistics can come to such a conclusion like this if they arent actively looking for it via confirmation bias, the article even states that there arent ANY primary written sources for shit
Hilariously these black women that they identified they did so using stereotypical phenotypic estimates and shit, they were 100% looking for something to bitch about and making it up as they went along

Glass-Perspective-32@reddit
Can you demonstrate why the results of the study were wrong?
Front-Ad-4743@reddit
Those people aren't rigorous in their science and are too quick to proclaim someone to be black, like that beachy head lady that was celebrated as an example of a sub-saharran african person, they even made her a plaque and then had to remove it after it turned out she wasn't black.
Same thing is happening here. Basically they measure the skulls like caliper race scientists and proclaim someone to be black based on skull features. Only one skeleton they proclaimed to be black ended up with mtdna extracted and it showed european, african and asian dna so the race of the person is inconclusive. They point out to a broad face and note that the person may be african, but it also means they could be asian, my guess is a finn/sami or someone like that, not an SSA. They also mention a lot of false positives. Basically this is all just terrible science done by people with pre-conceived results in mind.

Hilariously these black women that they identified they did so using stereotypical phenotypic estimates and shit, they were 100% looking for something to bitch about and making it up as they went along, its possible half of the skeletons they identified as black werent black at all
Glass-Perspective-32@reddit
Again, can you demonstrate that the study was flawed?
IMN0VIRGIN@reddit
3 things off the bat:
A very low body count (compared to the total deaths of the plague) means we're calculating an artificially created number against the true number. They claimed the site had 41 people not of white descent and only 3 women of African descent. Either way that's a LOW number to compare against roughly 100 million deaths.
All subjects are taken from the same location. The black plague's death rates skewed rapidly from 15% to 90% from village to village, city, to city. What if their home was in a higher death rate compared to the average(33%)?
There results came from ONE test. They did not attempt to repeat it at any other location to further prove their results of remove any anomalies - I get it that it would be hard to find a second location to repeat the test, but its needed to help solidify the results.
Djinigami@reddit
What do you mean with "stereotypical phenotypic estimates and shit"? Is that supposed to be criticism of their methods? Because the techniques they used are pretty standard for bioarchaeological research, so what exactly are you talking about?
V-Lenin@reddit
Actual clown take. Part of studying history is the ugly parts too. You honestly think back then british people weren‘t racist af? They even had structural racism against slightly different white people
Front-Ad-4743@reddit
I distinctly remember leftist academics pointing out how europeans weren't racist before the invention of race and that they welcomed non-white people in their societies. So this is a direct contradiction of that.
GruntBlender@reddit
No, they weren't racist against any other people.
The Fr*nch aren't people. The Scots are just misguided and need to be pacified. The Irish aren't people either. What's "Wales?" So anyway, no, not racist at all.

Alright fuckers, since none of you could be bothered to actually read the article, here's some key points and takeaways;
-The data was based on grave sites throughout London, of those buried between 1348-1350. They determined who was and wasn't of African heritage via bone analysis. My understanding is that that's a little bit iffy in terms of accuracy, but given they're anthropologists and I'm not I'll take their word for it
-Their sample size was 145 individuals, from 3 cemeteries (or about 0.004% of the estimated dead)
-The sample included both sexes, but this article has chosen to focus on the female data because it is abnormally high
-In terms of how high it was, they determined that while non-plague burials typically contained around 8% black women, plague burials contained around 20% black women.
Right so what does this actually tell us?
-If you were a black woman when the plague hit, you were straight up way more likely to die. Look, I don't care that it goes against your notion of what this study is or isn't, that's what the data fucking tells us, OK? It's not radical to point out that a group that made up ~8% of the overall population accounted for 20% of gravesites is a little disproportionate. And yeah, this can be linked to premodern structural racism, be that in terms of housing density, access to medical care, the type of jobs they had to work with the risks involved, etc.
Why does this matter though?
-It's cool to learn things about the past, fuck you
-More practically, it helps us inform disease policy in the modern day. We know that disproportionate casualties occurred during the pandemic- working out exactly under what conditions that disproportionate effect occurred and how we might potentially mitigate them could actually save lives. This article on its own won't do it, but it's part of a very large body of work that collectively improves our disease-fighting capability.
Tl;dr: Anon gets pissy that black women get a mention despite it being genuinely useful data, and also just really interesting to learn about, because anon gets nauseous every time he images a historical figure that isn't a white man.
RIPaccount@reddit
8% of the population? Are you fucking mental? Jesus christ
DurinnGymir@reddit
From the article;
"The report said: 'There is a significantly higher proportion of people of estimated African affiliation in the plague burials compared to the nonplague burials (18.4% vs. 8.3%).'"
I'm somewhat making the assumption that grave demographics are about 1:1 with the living population here. There are obviously some fairly significant factors that might influence this; where you died, how rich you were when you died, whether your grave site was regularly turned over etc., as well as the simple fact that the sample size was only about 150 so is vulnerable to selection bias, but given the article doesn't mention this I'm assuming it's about accurate. This wouldn't surprise me, by the way- the slave trade hadn't started yet (wouldn't for another 200 years) but emigration across Europe and North Africa had been ongoing for thousands of years at this point, so it's pretty reasonable to assume that a percentage of the London population was of African heritage.
For some actual evidence; another study seeking to get an idea of the makeup of 14th-century London came to about the same conclusion, but evidence beyond grave sites seems to be harder to come by until about the 16th century when the Tudors started writing things down. Later data suggests that around the 17th-18th century the total black population in London was around 1-3%, but whether that's because the earlier grave data is wrong or the population spiked and then dropped off between the 1300s and 1600s I can't really say.

Most of South Africa was empty when we got there. The Bantu migration pretty much stopped in Natal, and the West-Kaap had the Khoi San people, but that leaves nearly half that was unoccupied.
The San people are on good terms with the Afrikaners. The Bantu, errr, not so much. They have a habit of stealing cattle and voting for the ANC and we don't like paying employees in money.
Relevant_Goat_2189@reddit
"Most of South Africa was empty when we got there."
There's literally people staying in the desert, and you expect people to believe that South Africa, with its mild climate and two oceans was "mostly empty" before white people showed up?
Sounds far-fetched.
-Johannes-of-ZA-@reddit
This isn't disputed history, it's consensus.
Also, that land wasn't very good before we turned up.
Without irrigation and drainage systems the land was unfarmable.

And having access to two oceans means very little when you can't make a ship bigger than a canoe. Unless I'm wildly uneducated about African shipbuilding of the era.
-Johannes-of-ZA-@reddit
They didn't really do anything with the ocean, fishing or sailing wise.
Both the San and the Bantu also avoided bodies of fresh water because of malaria. Because the strain of malaria in Africa is far more deadly than the European, the Africans never developed immunity to it. The dutch resistance to the much milder European malaria crossed over to resistance in Africa.
We found all the river front land empty and waiting for us : ).

The Victorian-era Royal Geographical Society would have been all over South Africa once they heard there was this new, vast previously undiscovered landmass on the other side of the world.
You think that there wouldn't have been explorers heading to South Africa looking to make a name for themselves in search of new undiscovered bird and animal wildlife, if what you claim is true? This was at the time when Charles Darwin was at its peak.
"Also, that land wasn't very good before we turned up."
Then how did the Khoisan and various African ethnic tribes in South Africa manage to feed themselves for millennia before the first settlers arrived?
-Johannes-of-ZA-@reddit
"Victorian era" "Charles Darwin" "other explorers"
We arrived there more than 200 hundred years before this. In the early 1600's, the only Europeans to have sailed around the Cape were the Portuguese and us. And no one cared at the time about Africa. The craze was all about spices and silk from Asia.
Concerning the land west of Natal and east of the Cape, it is point of fact that it was uninhabited. The Khoi San were hunter gatherers and they didn't live there and the various Bantu groups had only showed up in Natal and further north a few hundred years prior. Maybe with time they would've expanded south, but that's irrelevant.
I repeat, the Bantu people, like the Zulu and Xhosa, have not lived in South Africa for thousands of years. Not even the ANC claims this. I don't where you got this from, but it's untrue. The Khoi San have, but only in the western part of the country. They're great people, I have nothing against them.

Find it difficult to believe that not a single explorer from even the Netherlands didn't do any exploration for 200 years in a supposed, previously undiscovered landmass(with two oceans) on the other side of the world.
These are the same Dutch who were required to send back to the Netherlands detailed weather reports about the different seasons in the Cape Colony.
South Africa happens to be one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world.

South Africa is the almost the same size as Western Europe put together. Why would the Khoisan have lived in every part of South Africa when they were but one of many ethnic groups in South Africa at the time?
"I repeat, the Bantu people, like the Zulu and Xhosa, have not lived in South Africa for thousands of years"
Where else on the African continent are there Zulus and Xhosa if they're not from South Africa?
" The Khoi San have, but only in the western part of the country. They're great people, I have nothing against them."
The Khoisan are originally from the Botswana area. Botswana has a Khoisan population.
They migrated down to the Western and Eastern Cape thousands of years ago to live by the coastline.

There's so many red herrings here that I could make sandwiches for two days.
1.: No one said the Dutch were isolated from Europe. They weren't. I said that they settled first. These two things are not mutually exclusive.
2.: Prior to Dutch settlement, the Khoi San were the only people in the country. They inhabited the Cape and the surrounding areas. Why didn't they expand? I don't know, but the last time I spoke to one he seemed pretty happy where he was, eating aardvarks and drinking honey moonshine.
3.: Where else are bantu people? There's 400 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. It went like this: some bantu people emigrated to South Africa and started calling themselves Zulus. They're not a distinct ethnicity, they're a culture.
4.: The San also live in Botswana. So? They're indigenous to both countries. Simply being indigenous to one modern, artificially bordered nation state does not mean you're indigenous to nowhere else.
Your comment is typical of people who claim that the Afrikaners have no place in South Africa. You try and paint us as invaders and colonisers when it simply isn't true. Shameful.

That's the actual conclusion from the research. Everything else is made up by anon or the author of the article.
It honestly makes sense in a city that black women would make up a lot of the burials in an emergency plague cemetery.
Lots of what they called "bondsmen" or people who were in basically slave contracts in London with the trade through the Thames. Women were considered less valuable to their employer and would have gotten less priority for food, medicine, etc and would have cared for the sick in already unsanitary conditions.
Any of them begging for a Christian burial would have been at the church's mercy and ended up in emergency cemeteries.

im gonna assume the number of black women in 13th century england was quite low, so they were affected more by the disease, there just were a lot of them to notice in the first place
NoLikeVegetals@reddit
They were more likely to be slaves (technically indentured servants) so poor as fuck and unlikely to receive food, shelter or medical treatment.
So yes, racism is a factor, but the biggest issue here is class and poverty. In other words, OP, who is almost certainly jobless and from a broken home, is mocking people he has much more in common with vs the rich white dudes (Musk, Theil, Trump) he no doubt worships.

I haven't read the article, but if your little example is accurate, it just sounds like they're pointing out that racial minorities were poorer in London and therefore had less access to good medical treatment, so they were more likely to die from diseases like the plague. I don't really get the fuss, this seems like it would be pretty standard research for people studying the history of racism.
According to the article, there are no primary sources from black people from this time, so looking at bones and working out death rates is a pretty smart way of doing this kind of research
WolfieTooting@reddit
Number of black women living in London during the plague years = zero
Brilliant-Mountain57@reddit
Bro this is basic pop science and manipulation with statistics, its not meant to be taken seriously. There was probably like 2 black chicks in all of London and if they both died to the plague then that would mean they would've been the only demographic with a 100% death rate.
Iron-Fist@reddit
Brilliant-Mountain57@reddit
Oh wow, I'm shocked that they genuinely tried to make it seem like the black plague just killed more blacks then any other demographic. Goes against every notion I've ever had about the black plague.
Brilliant-Mountain57@reddit
So not what I said but I think its basically saying the same thing. In all of London, blacks died more to the black plague then the whites but that doesn't mean more black people died just on average they died more. Which is disingenuous to not explicitly state that imo.
PCPooPooRace_JK@reddit
These mfers are masters of proportion data when it comes to the rate of black people dying to plague 600 years ago but cant look at modern crime statistics and find fascinating data from that
Falling_Vega@reddit
Well they found some bones of black people, so that cant be right. People had slaves back then
Matt_2504@reddit
Black traders and mercenaries yes, but they wouldn’t have been women. I doubt there were any slaves in London then, pretty sure it was illegal.
Falling_Vega@reddit
Slavery was made illegal in the 1800s, the black death was in the 1300s, and according to the paper, there were definitely slaves.
"the paper added that during this period mercantile and richer migrants who regularly stayed in London, accompanied by entire households, often had servants who were free or enslaved people originating from Sub-Saharan and northern Africa or Eastern Europe"
Matt_2504@reddit
Slavery was banned in England by Henry I I think, back in the 1100s, it’s just that it was only banned in the country, not abroad, I could be wrong though I can’t remember much about it. Remember that there is a difference between slaves and indentured servants.
Falling_Vega@reddit
That was a decree from the Church Council of London, it had no legislative power and wasn't signed by the King

"We have a responsibility to make sure that this information does not get divided between left and right in a culture war,”
arbiter12@reddit
dude... they found SOME bones of blacks.... They didn't find entire villages that would be the statistical basis of an archeological study....
You can't find a single belgian dude dying of diarrhea in a south pole base and claim "Belgian researchers infinitely more likely to die of gastroenterological diseases in arctic climates".
Funny how the defenders of minorities are formidably adept at handling minute statistics and studies in DEFENSE, but lose all capability in presence of numbers disproving their cause...
Falling_Vega@reddit
That’s not even close to what I was saying though. Yes, they did find some bones of black people, and this agreed with historical evidence of black people existing in England via slavery, and these slaves were more likely to die of the plague.
That’s literally it, that’s the study.
There’s no claims of entire villages within London, it’s simply proof that there were some black people in London, and they were more likely to die. I don’t understand why everyone is getting so angry over this

Realitype@reddit
Even worse, the actual study says they only found a grand total 3 individual skeletons that were likely to be black women, based on skull measurement. This is the level research were dealing with here.
Fortunately the BBC is here to educates us on how this definitely proves how the plague disproportionately affected black women due to racism.
Do_You_Pineapple_Bro@reddit
Strange take considering the black population at the time of the Plague was probably about, if not less than 1%, considering as of 2011, the UK consensus showed they made up 3% with mixed at 2%, and as of 2021, blacks made up 4.2% of Englands population.
But yeah no, the probably <10k Black People in the UK during the 1300s were the most affected, and thats not even taking into account that the North Atlantic Slave Trade was just shy of 100 years away, so that probably drags the total figure of black people in the UK down considerably

What findings? They (allegedly) looked at some bones and said they were African women. You can't even prove the race from a skeleton at all they're just going of stereotypical skull shapes if they even looked at bones at all. Given the time period and location they were most likely not African women and nobody has any reason to believe that they were. Just because you call something a study doesn't make it viable in the least
Front-Ad-4743@reddit
These people aren't rigorous in their science and are too quick to proclaim someone to be black, like that beachy head lady that was celebrated as an example of a sub-saharran african person, they even made her a plaque and then had to remove it after it turned out she wasn't black.
Here they basically just measure the skulls like caliper race scientists and proclaim someone to be black based on skull features. Only one skeleton they proclaimed to be black ended up with mtdna extracted and it showed european, african and asian dna so the race of the person is inconclusive. They point out to a broad face and note that the person may be african, but that means they might also be asian, my guess is a finn/sami or someone like that, not an SSA. They also mention a lot of false positives. Basically this is all just terrible science done by people with pre-conceived results in mind.
