CHANGE MY VIEW: Deanna Troi is the worst character, not just on TNG but of any Star Trek Series.

She's insipid and everything that comes out of her mouth is trite nonsense. She's also deliberately sexualised in the most crass and obvious ways. Everything about her is unnecessary and the only use I've ever seen of her was in Voyager, where she barely featured.
I'm no feminist but the needless sexualisation really bugs me.
EDIT: Not including guest characters.

She’s obviously the sex appeal of the show, but I think she does play a role in humanizing the other characters and simplifying situations. I’m no writer, so I’m not claiming to have a good eye for this. But from what I can remember, she played an important role in occasionally flushing out the feelings of an otherwise stoic Picard, or the blooming humanity in Data. I also remember all the times she made me uncomfortable with her story arcs, so I will give you that. Do I think she’s the best character? No. Is she the worst? No. Definitely near the bottom of the lineup. That sentiment could be my own jaded opinion, since I and almost every boy who watched had somewhat of a crush on her. I’m pretty conservative, so I’m not a big fan of just using women for their bodies. I don’t feel that she fell into this category though, because at least the sexiness makes sense for the character. She is a fairy attractive woman, who walks the line between Star Fleet and civilian. As a counselor, she needs to maintain an image of being approachable and confident with herself. Nothing about her dress and appearance screams uptight, but nothing suggests she is trying to look like the lady on the corner by the 7-11. The low cut is definitely for the gents in the room, but nothing nearly to the extent of 7 of 9, who I think, ironically, is a much more interesting character. Anyways, that’s my random Reddit opinion for the day. Take it or leave it.

as a counsellor she's awful...

Currently watching the episode where she loses her telepathic abilities and throws a wobbly. It's so awfully written!

Exactly, she should have been able to do her job without her powers, she simply has to listen to people...

I think that’s why Guinean was introduced. She was better at Troi’s job lol.

It's even more embarrassing the way the filled what Betazoid culture is; the Greek afterlife of Dionysius made real! Everyone born Betazed is a fuppin' slut!!?!?

We're gonna have to agree to disagree here. There are plenty of examples of her making correct and relevant judgements/observations of characters that lead to a positive outcome. One major example is the episode 'The Hunted', where she almost single-handedly helps prove the innocence of the condemned soldier and convinces the rest of the crew to side with him against an unjust government, despite all of them - especially Picard - being initially hostile to the prisoner. Her natural tendency to be sympathetic and give the benefit of the doubt to people in any situation sometimes has its problems, but other times it's what makes the difference between their situation being reconsidered and it being ignored/condemned.
Her role on the Enterprise - at such a high-ranking position as literally sitting next to the captain - is also supposed to represent something: in the future quasi-military institution that is Starfleet, the mental health and psychological condition of the people onboard is considered a very high priority and is given the appropriate respect.
Edit: I'm very confused as to why I've been downvoted for this comment

I’m confused, too. The fact that high-ranking officers all respect a person whose primary contribution is empathy unravels OP’s argument for me.

high ranking people respected a certain mustachio murderer, i take he was right then, right?

Part of the problem is that her powers were too OP for the writers' tastes. Often, they'd just have her not be on the bridge when she might have something valuable to offer. Even when she was on the bridge, she would conveniently not be able to get a decisive read.
Another is that they did a poor job of explaining the limits of her abilities. She was able to read sentient beings on a planet while in orbit one minute, then not be able to tell if anyone else was alive on the ship she was on the next. She could telepathically read people who were communicating via a video feed. Now - is she actually telepathically reading them there? How? The video is just an image. There's no sentience there. The most she could be doing is reading facial cues.

I'm not active on MGTOW. What is it about my question that makes you accuse me of trolling? That's very uncharitable of you.

A) Active? That's a year ago.
B) What does that have to do with my question? You're just saying you don't like something I posted a year ago so now everything I say is garbage.
What a nasty, spineless little helminth you are.

This is what got you temp banned. Be more civil when it expires.
EDIT - I'm just gonna go ahead and clip the thread right here. It got into more name-calling pretty quick.

Airing this publicly is some really novice level moderating. Keep it in a personal message.
