What's the best bluetooth FM transmitter for high sound quality?

Hello everyone
Long story short, i have no way to officially play music from my phone in my car (2004 W211). I am looking to buy a bluetooth FM transmitter, what can you guys recommend for good sound quality?
robowire_@reddit
few things that'll actually make or break your sound quality more than the device itself: -find a completely dead frequency in your area, not just quiet, fully dead. this alone fixes most of the static and dropout people complain about -bluetooth version matters, anything 5.0 and above is noticeably more stable especially when your phone screen locks -placement near your car's antenna port makes a real difference, lower dash or center console area -don't go too cheap, the gap between a budget one and a mid range one is actually audible oh and someone compared aux and fm transmitters in this post that saved me from making the wrong call.good luck, once you dial in the frequency it's genuinely not bad at all.
schwidley@reddit
They're all pretty much the same. It's still fm quality. I bought the cheapest on Amazon and it's fine.

I bought one on Amazon, but its not stereo, the sound is fine, but is one channel only

My radio sounds way better than the transmitter but everyone else i know always get there's to actually come out good
TudorG22@reddit (OP)
what would you define as "fm" quality?
schwidley@reddit
Turn on the radio in your car and tune to a fm station with a strong signal. That's the best that any Bluetooth fm transmitter will sound.
It's definitely not anywhere near cd quality or a newer cat with a real Bluetooth connection.
TudorG22@reddit (OP)
Alright, thanks for the info. I'll have to wait until I get the car back from the mechanic to test that out
kxidias@reddit
These people have no idea about w211. If you have a headunit with most, then it's a pain to go aftermarket with the head unit. W211 Had a very poor sounding Aux input at the back of the head unit. Judt buy any fm modulator that plugs into the lighter scoket, they're all prettt much the same.

Ok so the sound quality will always depend on two things: the transmitter itself and how clean your fm frequency is. So look for something with stable bluetooth (5.0+ ideally) and noise cancellation tech, this basically helps reduce static and keeps calls clearer. Some models even have a little bass boost n EQ options for upbeat music. Also its just helpful if it comes like this with ports n all. And when setting it up, try scanning for the quietest fm frequency in your area even if it’s far from the numbers your radio normally uses, it will make your music way cleaner. Also, position the transmitter so the display and controls are easy to see.
flamehazebubb@reddit
fm transmitter can be hit or miss with sound quality tbh. hardwired bluetooth modulators will def give you better audio, but they require more of an installation process yk.
for something easier to set up, this one seems decent tbh. it has bluetooth 5.4 so the connection is stable with less sound loss and the bass boost option also helps with audio quality. just make sure you find a clean fm frequency in ur area, that makes the biggest difference in how clear it sounds tbh.
RaiDeN2502@reddit
i struggled with this same issue until switched to this and the sound quality suprised me for my old car

can someone help me ? i bought one of those bluetooth transmitters you plug into the cigarette lighter so i can pair my phone with the radio in my 2004 NISSAN Sentra (yep she's still going ) - - for some reason when i try and scan for a blank station to pair it with it skips right over them and i can't fine tune - maybe i'm a dolt but i can't figure it out - the stereo system still sounds great but the cd player stopped working years ago and as we all know commercial radio blows - i've been using a cable plugged into the AUX jack but they continually break so i thought this might be a viable option - I would appreciate any help my friends -

You've probably already bought one but for what it's worth there are differences in the quality of the various cheap Bluetooth adapter's available. There seems to be about 4 or 5 different types, all the others are variations of these 5. Definitely avoid the super small ones. I tried a few and this style was the best I could find. It's good for podcasts and not terrible for music. Get the generic version off eBay for about $30. Good luck!

I got one for 20 euros off aliexpress, which means it would have been around 30-40 to buy in Europe. It is of good quality and has all the features I want, my main problem is the constant radio noise and distortions, I can't seem to find any permanently noise free frequencies.
ThePandaKingdom@reddit
If your vehicle is a 2004 you might be able to relatively easily just get an aftermarket radio with Bluetooth and all that jazz, might liven up your sound system a bit too depending on the quality of the stock unit.
TudorG22@reddit (OP)
I'd rather not to as it's too expensive for me to justify
Beerand93octane@reddit
What did you look at? A bare bones single din JVC, Pioneer, Alpine, on Crutchfield is around $120. If your car has a double it'll come with a dash kit for free to make it look nice.
By the time you did all this junk you might as well had spent the $120.
No_Warning2380@reddit
many cars require an installation kit - both my 2012 cadillac srx and 2012 infiniti require a kit that costs over $500 dollars plus the cost of whatever head unit/stereo I choose (even the bar minimum old style non touchscreen) - and plus installation in most cases because no way am I about to try and tear apart my interior.
TudorG22@reddit (OP)
If i replace something i'll need to replace the whole infotainment unit, the cheapest acceptable one (still chinese) is around 300 euros.
stinx01@reddit
I'm late to the show but if your radio has a CDC button, try holding it. It should switch to AUX (which means you have a pre-installation for AUX). Then just buy a AUX connector for it (Google something like W211 AUX connector or AUDIO 30), take the radio out and plug it in the back.
If it doesn't, then buying a whole unit would be the best idea. Otherwise, an FM Modulator is an option.
Do not buy Chinese Android radio units, a lot of people say the quality is crap
TudorG22@reddit (OP)
if I hold the cdc button it just says "no cdc" and then goes back to the normal screen

Hey there! I also have an older car and had the same music problem. Based on my experience, I've found that sound quality is key when choosing a bluetooth FM transmitter. One thing that I was really mindful of when making my selection was choosing a transmitter that supported aptX or aptX HD technologies. If you're not familiar with them, these techs basically ensure superior sound quality over Bluetooth. I don't want to be super specific as to not break any rules, but there's a really good one I've been using for a while now, and its sound quality is stellar! It might be good to check it out – it's compact, easy to set up, and has quick pairing. I never leave for a drive without it. Its signal is so strong and interruptions are almost non-existent compared to others I have tried. I got it from this website. It even comes with additional features like dual-USB ports for charging on the go, so it's super handy. Just thought it might be of help, happy driving, and jamming!

Better than any short-range FM transmitter, you can get a hardwired [FM modulator with Bluetooth] that plugs directly into the antenna port in the back of the radio head unit, then your stock antenna cable plugs into the modulator. The modulator picks up your Bluetooth and taps the output signal directly into the physical antenna circuit at one of (usually) two selectable frequencies on the radio dial; here's an eBay search for them.
There's also similar, older-style FM modulators without Bluetooth, just an aux-in jack; these were commonly used to tap aftermarket CD changers into stock factory radios back in the day. IMO these would be preferable if your audio source (e.g. phone) has an aux-out/line-out or headphone jack. Anywhere you can eliminate a wireless signal in favor of a hardwired connection for audio, the better.
Finally, if your stock head unit has a cassette player, there's also rechargeable dummy cassettes with Bluetooth built-in, so your phone would transmit a BT signal to the cassette adapter, which would then feed the audio signal right into the tape head just like playing a real cassette tape.
Sultangris1@reddit
If you're going to waste your time taking all that apart to do that you might as well just put in a better head unit to start with 🤣

You're still going to need to make sure it supports codecs that have a high bitrae. Bluetooth's SBC codec is pretty bad quality.

Surely there must be better ways to upgrade that car.
Either a USB or BT module or just replace the head unit?
FM transmitters “work”, but it’s crappy deluxe. If you can just pop in a different head-unit then you are spoiled for choice.
If it’s a very integrated thingy, like my 2005 A6 had a MOST bus and all the hardware except for the CD changer was in the trunk connected with fiber optics.
Got a third party module that pretended to be the CD-changer and gave me a USB-interface and optional Bluetooth.
Obviously the car is 20 years next year, so don’t go overboard, but if you can swap in a DIN-unit that’s basically the same price as an FM transmitter.

thanks for the tip

If you google "w211 radio aux" or "w211 radio bluetooth" you should find some discussions and videos about dongles you can buy to add those inputs to your factory radio, far better than most of the other solutions suggested here.

Most of the FM Transmitters do a decent job, its interference from regional FM Stations that bring the quality down.
I use https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/vacant to find which is the best FM Channel for where you are. Though best channels change quite quickly across landscapes, but at least you are not left guessing on which one to hop on to now.
Hope this helps!

Pick an FM transmitter that has the latest Bluetooth version, 5.3, for better range and sound quality. Also, make sure it has Hi-Fi Deep Bass, which ensures the device delivers high-quality sound with strong, punchy low-end frequencies. There are plenty of options with these features, like this really good one from Syncwire
Good_wolf@reddit
I’ve had this one for a while and it’s been really good. Only problem I’ve had is when I upgraded to my 16 Pro Max and now I have to connect it manually every time instead of automatically. Not sure why. Older units seem to connect fine and this one is really good when it’s connected but I need to find a way to do a factory reset or something.

TudorG22@reddit (OP)
Yes. I'm posting the Amazon France link. You can turn off the side leds and manually choose a frequency, I chose 108.0 (maximum it can do) and it works without any issue or static. It also provides very fast charging if you plug your phone in

You can buy a 7"-10" LCD touch screen that mounts to your air vents, dash or screen. You can mirror your phone via wifi so that answers that, then via the aforementioned 3.5mm stereo audio or FM transmitter skipping the BT step.

Along the similar lines, anyone would care to recommend a head unit can be converted and home wall mounted?
Environmental-Gur582@reddit
Very possible. You'll need the corresponding harness connectors for 12V power and audio out. If you're only using two speakers, just use the "Front" connections and set the head unit to increase front bias.
