Waving culture

So I'm curious as to why the culture of giving the wave of respect and understanding to other drivers is almost non existent. I mean i know why i don't wave to certain drivers and companies, and i will say it, even if it does get me negative reviews. It's because trucking is a career and a passion for some of us, it is in our blood and we take it seriously. Doesn't matter if you drive long nose pete loaded in chrome or a company supplied freightliner. It's the passion in your heart. I don't wave to certain "people" because i don't think of them as truck drivers. They are simply here for the fact that they can't get hired doing anything else and make money. They are steering wheel holders with their foot up on the dash. I don't want them to feel welcome to the industry. That's why i don't wave hardly anymore.

I'd be interested in you describing the 'criteria' by which you determine who you will wave to and not. You can see the following when you meet another truck: The truck itself The trailer it's pulling The face of the driver Please explain to me which of these provides the ability to determine how that human should be treated.

Besides a foot dangling out the window, how do you judge someone driving by if they're worthy of your wave? Disdain for other companies without actually knowing the driver just perpetuates the class divide between workers and owners. They profit while we berate each other over who we drive for. Anyhow, I don't wave to anyone because I don't know them. I see about a thousand trucks a day, and it sounds nutty to wave at any of them, let alone all of them. Now, if I were face to face, I would treat them with respect, whether it's a "steering wheel holder" or some grizzled old school salty fuck, because I try to surround myself with positivity, and not make the world a bigger shithole than it already is.

I noticed up in Maine I get waved at a lot by fellow drivers. Not much elsewhere though.

LTL drivers tend to always wave at each other. It is rare for any other species of truck driver to wave at me. It happens, but it is rare and I’ve never felt the urge to wave at a stranger solely because they are driving a commercial vehicle. I’d assume it’s the same where you have others out the doing basically the same job as you are for a different company no matter what aspect of truck driving you are in.

I wave if are in town and going slow enough to see. I'll say this: local drivers tend to wave back a lot more or even beat me to it.

I wave on long country roads where there’s towns of 50-100 people and nobody between them. Everyone waves so I wave back.

I get waves all the time dude. Instead of being a grumpy old man wave at people and you’ll get waves back. Second of all, It doesn’t matter why people go into the trucking industry, we all use the same roads and follow the same rules. Just because someone doesn’t pass your “initiation test” doesn’t mean they don’t deserve some positive vibes going their way. It’s rough out here man. Just be positive, cause we all need it.

I wave fairly often but I grew up in a rural area so it's kind of ingrained into me. I don't get upset or think anything of it if other drivers don't wave back.

I think a lot is location. A run a lot of rural so it's all light flashes for passing at night and finger waves in the morning.

Not to be dismissive, but I think it's because windows are tinted nowadays. I remember when you used to be able to see (clearly) another driver's face, across the interstate. Our company drivers would always wave. But now, I can't even see if you're waving or if there's even a person there.

If you wave at me and I catch it in time, I'll wave back. If I'm driving around locally, or in small communities, I'm usually ready to wave, especially if I already missed one. Other than that, I only wave at fellow company drivers, since we're small enough that I should know them.
