Can you Gen-Xers answer my OKC bombing questions?

I just turned 6 when it happened, and remember the basic details: some lunatic named Timothy McVeigh blew up a building that had people ranging from toddlers to elderly in it. My mom told me right after that it was a government building. My comprehension on it wasn't as clear as when 9/11 happened. I recently watched a documentary to get an info that I wasn't told on. I still have questions: \-Why the Murrah building? McVeigh was pissed off with the government, but there are many federal buildings. \-Why did McVeigh get the death penalty while Nichols got life in prison, Fortier 12 and now in the Witness Protection Program? \-McVeigh was arrested shortly for driving without a license plate and having firearms. Was that just a stupid move or did he actually want to get caught? \-Why were some people hoping it was a foreigner? \-How did this change safety in America? I remember everything being the same, unlike after 9/11. \-I heard this was a defining even in history for Gen-X like the fall of the Berlin Wall or the Challenger. Do you agree?
