People who carry without a holster, WHY?

Please explain yourselves.
You may also provide stories of explanations you’ve heard from people who carry without a holster.
I have never carried WITHOUT some type of holster
nicelium@reddit
Appendix carry with a holster use to get my adrenaline going just having a gun pointed at my dick all the time. Then the adrenaline started to wear off. Now I appendix carry without a holster to keep that rush going. Pretty soon I’ll have to switch from a Glock to a 2011 with the hammer cocked and the safety off. If I don’t blow my dick off after that idk what I’m gonna do to up the ante. Suggestions are welcome. God help anyone who didn’t think this comment was sarcasm.

Bruh, just join law enforcement and carry a P320 for the highest of thrills

Appendix carry a p320. Its only a matter of time.

I think you should try double edged dagger without a sheath in appendix carry for a REAL thrill. Caution: thrill may end abruptly upon bending over.

Canik mc9 prime, dont have a holster yet but I want to carry it. Appendix carry non chambered, sits nice and low. Doing research for a nice holster, but until then, I'm gonna do it like this
Juicebedabbin@reddit
Yall are a bunch of little girls I’ve carried appendix with no holster since I was 15 and never felt the bullshit yall talkin bout

Cause a lanyard has worked fine so far.

And where do you wear it jus on yo neckb
Ohbuck1965@reddit
This lanyard, is it one size fits all, or do you have to order one special?
the_Charlemagne@reddit
Its an adjustable one i got with a thumb drive.
Christopho@reddit
Just to play devil's advocate, if there's no ammo chambered in a glock, there's zero possibility of it firing even with a magazine loaded, correct? Trigger could snag on something, but the chances of you accidentally racking it is practically zero.
No reason for a holster if you don't carry one in the chamber.
generalraptor2002@reddit (OP)
If you don’t have a holster, the gun could very easily fall out of your waistband/pocket
This is especially important if a fight gets physical or you are knocked to the ground
If you carry waistband with no holster (referred to by police officers as felony carry), what do you do with the gun when you need to use a public restroom? If you have a holster it stays attached to you.
A holster is not just about preventing negligent discharges, it is also about keeping the gun in place
Finally, carrying without one in the chamber means beginning the engagement with a malfunction and putting yourself at a disadvantage
AccurateTooth1735@reddit
I pocket carry my Ruger EC9s with the safety engaged without a holster all the time but, I don't keep anything else in the pocket except the gun so I'm not worried about it ever going off negligently, also I'm not a moron and I'm aware at all times of what I'm doing.
generalraptor2002@reddit (OP)
Manual safeties can (and often do) get nudged off
I had the hammer of my DA/SA CZ-75 SP01 tactical cock back under the steering wheel of my car as I was stepping out
I let the instructor know
He had me walk over to a clearing barrel, disengage the retention hood of my duty holster, draw slowly, throw the decocker, and reholster.
Even though there was a cocked pistol ready to fire in my holster, it was safe because nothing could get at the trigger
When it’s in a pocket, falling down can be enough to nudge the trigger on a striker fired or single action pistol
0fb3d3@reddit
Because my holster clip broke and the new one I ordered will take 8 days. So that's 8 says of no holster using my belt. But never have had a problem I for sure think people overreact over this issue though. Sure something can slide in your pocket weird and pull the trigger and you happen to have the safety off. But a lot of things can happen every day. I'd rather have it on me still while waiting for a holster than not have it.
treebeard120@reddit
I don't do it, but I can see a lot of utility in pocket carry for small revolvers.
generalraptor2002@reddit (OP)
For pocket carry you should still use a pocket holster
Stevarooni@reddit
1) Yes, you should.
2) But a revolver (especially) can be safely pocket carried as long as it's alone in the pocket and nothing falls in to press the trigger.
3) For safety's sake, yes, you should, even with a revolver. But every case is individual and decided by a person's own desires and wisdom. As long as "should" isn't "legally mandated to".
UncleS1am@reddit
No, it can't.
onkenstein@reddit
I’ve never understood the logic there. How is a DAO revolver any safer than a DAO Bodyguard/LCP? Is the perception that an exposed hammer makes it safer? Maybe the rotation of the cylinder?I’m genuinely curious why this notion persists.
Stevarooni@reddit
Many DAO revolvers have heavier triggers. This isn't a guarantee, but it's less likely for casual contact to activate such a heavy trigger. Most semi-autos have light triggers, though DA trigger pulls can be as heavy for a DA/SA semi-auto pistol, but in general, revolvers have heavier DA pulls.
onkenstein@reddit
Thank you for explaining that.
extortioncontortion@reddit
its not just the heavier trigger. Its the length of pull combined with it being heavier that means its only going to fire with a sustained action. and you are likely to feel the cylinder move.
I_love_Bunda@reddit
Personally, I am comfortable carrying any DA gun without a holster. The heavy and long trigger pull is sufficient to protect against something accidentally snagging the trigger. I pocket carry a DA revolver without a holster occasionally, and have waistband carried DA autos in a pinch before (always with a very sturdy belt though). That said, a holster is always better if it's an available option.
onkenstein@reddit
I see what you’re saying. I pocket carry often, but always use a holster. In addition to trigger protection, it helps with printing some. Just my preference.
Stevarooni@reddit
What's going to press the trigger in an empty pocket? Obviously this ignores the risk of reaching into a pocket and grabbing a revolver that doesn't have a protected trigger unless you make your hands "mittens" without a trigger finger, but a simple, empty pocket doesn't have anything to press the trigger as long as it has a trigger guard.
To clarify, I am not recommending this, I would do what I could to have a holster even for a revolver with a long, strong trigger pull. I'm saying that someone could do it with little risk as long as they're entirely thorough in clearing the pocket and never putting anything in there but the revolver and a hand (MITTENS) to pull out the revolver.
treebeard120@reddit
Nah. Hammerless .38 pocket guns are perfectly safe to carry in a jacket or jeans pocket so long as it's the only thing in there.
bluedaddy338@reddit
Yep. I used to have a palm sized .380 and would go perfect in a pocket.
Loud-Log9098@reddit
You can carry an lcp in gym shorts and it not really print, you obviously wouldn't chamber it if you have no holster protecting the trigger. That's just common sense. It's for when you don't actually want to carry a full sized gun.
snowhusslegang@reddit
Same, or in my jacket hoody it never shows for me but I usually try to keep it in a zippered pocket in my jacket
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
Roommate of mine looked at me and asked, "Why do you have a holster?" I responded because it protects the trigger and makes my draw smoother and faster. His response was, "Holster slows you down" but then proceeded how he put a ruger LCP and almost shot his pp off and how it went off in his pants.
Same guy also asked why I had a weapon mounted light on my firearm. Saying when I go to shoot the muzzle flash is what lights the room up.
He didn't feel comfortable when I asked him, "So if I see a shadowy figure in the kitchen and its you, you just want me to shoot at it to identify it?"
hikehikebaby@reddit
Your solution is to point a loaded gun at your roommate?
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
Nah, his solution is I shoot a loaded gun at the roommate.
My solution is use the weapon mounted light to identify the roommate, using indirect lighting techniques.
hikehikebaby@reddit
I'd be extremely pissed if a roommate pulled a gun on me in my own kitchen.
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
You'd be more pissed if I shot you. ;)
hikehikebaby@reddit
Oh gosh. If only there were another solution. Get a fucking night light for your kitchen they cost $5. You control the lighting in your own home, and pulling a gun on your roommate to use your WML as a flashlight is absolutely unacceptable even if you're pointing it down. What is wrong with you.
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
Sometimes the power goes out.
hikehikebaby@reddit
I think you are missing that pulling a gun on your roommate in any context is absolutely unacceptable. Figure something else out.
MadRabbit86@reddit
I think you’re missing the entire point he’s making…
hikehikebaby@reddit
I think that a lot of people have delusions that they're going to be searching their house using a weapon-mounted light, and I think that it's often not the best approach to home defense.
MadRabbit86@reddit
It is if you don’t want to get shot. It doesn’t matter if it’s bright and sunny with all the lights on or pitch black in the middle of the night, if I think there’s an intruder in my house I’m going to be aiming down the sights of my weapon as I move and investigate. Only difference is if it’s dark I’m going to have my weapon light switched on.
hikehikebaby@reddit
So I guess we're ditching the pretense that were only using it for indirect lighting.
I hope you don't have roommates, pets, or children. The person I was originally responding to does.
MuddyBenelli@reddit
Scenario:
Roommate is out of town, returns early without notice, in the middle of the night. (Happened to me many times at 2-3am)
You think someone has broken into your house, but want to identify the threat/non-threat and assess the situation after having just woken up.
Might I ask what brand of night light you purchase to handle such possible intruder moments in case it isn't your roommate?
hikehikebaby@reddit
You can buy whatever kind of night light you want. It's a good idea to have exterior and interior lighting in your home for security reasons - it's a great deterrent to break-ins and it makes it a lot easier to see whether or not the person in your house is someone who belongs there.
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
Well currently I don't live with roommates, so if I do find somebody in my kitchen....
Jaegermeiste@reddit
If you happen to catch the person you're arguing with rooting around in your kitchen, hit them hard with some nonlethal this: https://www.amazon.com/Practice-Perfect-Intermediate-English-Comprehension/dp/0071798846/
Then safe and clear your weapon, and use your Streamlight or Viridian or Surefire (or whatever) to illuminate it for them so can they lern to reed.
Wandering-Weapon@reddit
You do realize that the point is that the person is unknown to be the roommate. And nightlight is not the solution because they're not that bright, and shadows exist. Trigger discipline and offset lighting is the answer.
hikehikebaby@reddit
I think that it's very easy to set up your home so that you can recognize whether or not the person in the kitchen is someone who lives there. It's not hard at all and pulling a gun on your roommate is not an acceptable solution.
alltheblues@reddit
The WML is not a searchlight. It is in case you need to illuminate something while holding the gun with both hands or if your support hand is occupied and there is no other way to illuminate the target.
CXavier4545@reddit
mmhmm the ol indirect lighting technique trick ey
Otherwise-Baby3717@reddit
Yep, Target Acquisition, Target Identification, Target Isolation.
As well as, Intent, Weapon, and Delivery system
SEND_PIZZA_@reddit
You have no idea how to use a WML do you?
hikehikebaby@reddit
What I know is that drawing a gun on someone is assault and that there are a large number of easy ways to illuminate your home that don't involve pulling a gun on your roommate, whether it's pointed away from them or not.
Your firearm isn't a flashlight nor is it a replacement for security lighting.
I also know that the risk of an ND at 2am when you are tired and pumped full of adrenaline and your hands are tense is not negligible.
SEND_PIZZA_@reddit
Of course my gun isn’t a flashlight. That’s why I put one on it lol.
Just point it at the floor and let the light bounce up. It’s really that easy. Then you have more control of the gun with two hands.
hikehikebaby@reddit
I understand what you and the other commenters mean. I don't think that it's safe or acceptable to draw a gun on your roommate, even if you're pointing it at the floor.
SEND_PIZZA_@reddit
Well for one, you’ve probably already drawn your gun even if you’re using a handheld light. Are you actually saying that you got so suspicious of a noise that you went to go check it out and you left your gun in your bedroom? Or did you stop to put pants and a holster on before going?
hikehikebaby@reddit
I live with another adult and several pets so if I hear a noise at night, my first thought is that it's someone who's supposed to be in my house, not an intruder. I react accordingly.
My safety isn't the only concern. I also have a responsibility to others in my household.
Since I have use of both hands, I can grab a gun in a holster and remove the holster if necessary. I can also grab a rifle and leave the safety on unless I need to shoot. I want to be clear that I'm not advocating for using a handheld light to clear your house. I'm advocating for having security lighting inside and outside of your home and avoiding trying to clear your house. I'm advocating for safe and reasonable tactics.
If you can't figure out how to secure your home without putting yourself or others into danger needlessly and becoming the problem instead of the solution, then you're going to have to sit down and figure something out.

DryFoundation2323@reddit
Does this question include off body carry? My bag has a velcro strap that wraps around the trigger guard. Do we call that a holster?
ButterscotchFront340@reddit
I read a piece by a retired cop that said that 90% of thugs, wonnabes, and criminals carry without a holster while 90% of law-abiding citizens carry in a holster.
And I think about it, and back when I was young and stupid and lived in NYC, so carrying was not an option, whenever I would imagine carrying a gun, I never imagined a holster. Just never thought about it.
When I got older and moved to Florida and started carrying, the holster was the first thing I bought (actually bought multiple because couldn't find one that I liked) while still waiting for my CWP to be approved. So the first time I actually carried a gun, and did so as a dignified citizen, the gun was in a holster.
I think the process of learning about it and reading and mentally preparing is what drove me to using a holster. I can't even imagine carrying without it.
So... I guess people who don't carry in a holster are the opposite of that.
burner118373@reddit
It’s so criminals can ditch the gun without obvious evidence they had one. Law abiding carriers don’t really think that way.
Old_Perception@reddit
I'll believe some criminals reason it out that way, but I would bet good money that for the vast majority of them it's just a cheap Taurus that someone else bought or stole, they barely know how to use it to begin with, and they have put zero thought into storing it beyond tucking it into their waistband like the other gangbangers do.
burner118373@reddit
No. I’ve read some interesting referenced articles on the matter. Criminals aren’t (always) stupid and it would be wise for us good guys not to under estimate them

To back this up
I asked the retired FBI special agent who is the security director of the local Jewish community center I go to
“If you arrest and search someone who you know or have reasonable cause to believe is a prohibited person and find an empty holster in their waistband, is that probable cause for you to go search for a gun”
Him: “Yes”

So I would argue that he still didn’t put the name in the description.

Actually🤓, when I was in Egypt we had local personal security. Dude wore a burgandy suit straight out of 1970 "gators bitches better be wearing jimmies" territory. He had an mp5k strapped to his hip with this obnoxiously large "holster".
Imagine the wrap used to check your blood pressure with belt slits. It hugged the mp5 between the grip and mag, velcro retention.

Parttimeteacher@reddit
Well, back in my day, we used to carry with our gun belts and holsters. Then, the government started requiring licenses and, in some places, outright banning people from carrying. We couldn't wear the big gun belts and holsters without getting caught, so we started tucking our pistols into our waistband. That way, if the Federales showed up, we could ditch the pistol and come back for it later. (translated from Spanish) -an old Mexican Vaquero (probably)
Wannabe_Operator83@reddit
Why should i carry with a holster, when i already carry my flintlock in my nightstand?

Okie_Surveyor@reddit
Friend of mine, who is about 350lb+ always carried his Judge in his gym shorts. Couldnt even tell.
StorkyMcGee@reddit
I will occasionally throw my S&W 638 into a pocket. I work from home and sweatpants are like 90% of my attire when doing so. If I just have to run to the store I will throw the 638 in my pocket. I would never do that with my Sheild, etc, but a 12 pound DA pull is highly unlikely to get get caught on something and NDed.
RoyalStallion1986@reddit
I have a concealed hammer Ruger LCR and I'm definitely guilty of throwing it in my pocket when I'm wearing basketball shorts. Not super comfortable and not advocating for it but I was hyper aware of the guns position for the 5 minutes I'm in the store.
StorkyMcGee@reddit
Let's break it down, why should you NOT pocket carry? Seems to me three main reasons:
Risk of ND/AD - Not really an issue, or at least not as much an issue, with a revolver with a 12 pound DA trigger
Accessibility - It is definitely easier to draw from, say, a 3 oclock holster than from a pocket, but in the cases we described it is significantly less likely to be needed. And besides, both our pieces can be fired from a pocket.
Retention - You are likely to drop a pistol tucked into a belt, but not a pocket.
So is there really a downside to a DA revolver in a pcoket?

weighted_walleye@reddit
Slightly off topic, but it amazes me the number of people who ask me how I carry a firearm and when I reply "a holster", they are just shocked. Many people are totally clueless to the fact that inside the waistband holsters exist. Not necessarily their fault, clearly the industry needs to do a better job of education.
Also, I had a guy at work the other day decide to show me his new crappy gun and he yanked it right out of his shorts pocket with nothing even close to a holster. I told him he needed a pocket holster before he carried it and well, you know how that went. Amazing how people get away with that shit.

I do funny dramatic stuff with blue guns and SIRT pistols (basically a laser gun designed to fit in Glock holsters) but it goes to show WHY you:
Never try to catch a falling gun
Never carry without a holster
Why the SERPA is a piece of shit
Arpytrooper@reddit
Could you elaborate on why it's a piece of shit? I can't see why having to push your trigger finger inwards towards the trigger while drawing a firearm in a situation where super fine motor control goes out the window could be a problem.
Fr the SERPA holster is the dumbest idea possible and I'm surprised that more people haven't ND'd into their legs by now

I’ve only ever done this on occasions where I want to have an extra gun in a coat pocket but I’m not expecting or needing to draw it, so I can leave it unchambered. Specifically, when I’m hunting or shooting sporting clays or camping or if I have another holstered carry gun. Sometimes it’s just peace of mind to have an extra little LCP or shield tucked away.

I worked on an interdiction team and we arrested a lot of criminals with guns on them. It was our primary mission - looking for armed criminals associated with the dealers at open air drug markets. None of the guys ever used holsters.
We had a good rapport with the corner boys and after we grabbed them, we’d tell them all the indicators we saw which gave us the legal basis to jump out on them. Then we’d usually say, “You know - if you carried in a holster, you wouldn’t have given us nearly as many indicators.” The reply we’d usually get back was along the lines of “Only cops carry in holsters and we ain’t cops.”
Ornery-Exchange-4660@reddit
KelTec P3AT in my pocket. It is the only thing that I keep in that pocket so there's nothing to interfere with the trigger or drawing the pistol. I tried using a pocket holster, but it just got in the way.

stonegiant4@reddit
To start with: I typically use a pocket holster just to keep the gun oriented for a quicker draw.
Some guns are literally designed for naked pocket carry. Examples being beretta 21a and 3032 type pistols with both a manual safety and a long heavy double action trigger are safe to carry unholstered.
Also, one should consider the pocket they have their gun in to be the holster and make that pocket exclusive of anything else.

I put my shield .45 or 2.0 9mm in my pocket if I am going to the corner store. They easily fit in the pocket.

Honestly cause the holsters my my .38 suck balls and it can fit nicely in my back pocket

Back pocket carry is terrible from both a tactical perspective and a “retention” perspective
The handle could slide up and you don’t even notice
The draw stroke is also awkward

I agree but it has like a 15 pound trigger pull, and it’s small enough to not be noticed as a pistol, I should say 99% of the time I carry my M&P in a kydex concealed holster, but occasionally I like to take the revolver

Perfect it someone demanded ur wallet. Guy I knew had a leather rectangular holster with a couple holes on each side for the finger to go through. Was pretty cool.

I’ve seen those before
Those are a negligent discharge waiting to happen

I used to have a great holster. But ever since Kevin, things just kinda fall out of there.

Cause I can’t fit my Glock with the stendo and the beam in a holster
