Ok, so actual prepper question — I just bought a house where I can have chickens. How do we all feel about chickens right now? Should I wait to get chickens until this bird flu epidemic passes? Wait a year or two? I'm in a region that is a "bird flyway," so I'm not sure if I should be concerned about the birds flying around coming into the yard, or if I need to worry about my neighbors' chickens. Anyway, I'm new to all of this and not sure.

One option is to use PPE when handling the chickens.

It feels like bird flu is a seasonal occurrence these days. So there's not much point in waiting for it to go away, because it won't. It'll keep happening every year, especially if you're on that bird flyway (more exposure chances). So if you want to raise chickens, I would say go for it. But you need to concentrate on biosecurity for them, removing things that attract wild birds. Ie. remove ponds/standing water, hide your birds food/water so it isn't visible from the air, don't visit infected farms/areas, clean well after visiting neighbors/risky areas. etc. If you have a chicken that's looking sick, get them away from the rest of your crop and see if they recover/die. From the articles I have seen, they usually drink less water and act depressed (ie. more depressed than usual) when they're getting/are sick.

Some people don't recognize sarcasm, apparently. Here's a spare "/s" to use next time.

This is not the first time bird flu has been caught by humans, and it's never been transmitted human to human. Not sure why this is intel. There are a couple of cases a year, always among poultry workers. I mean if you're working with chickens, yes you need to be gloved and masked and yes if your birds get sick you need to call in the medical authorities because it could be a big deal. But for humans, R0 is 0 and the CFR doesn't seem to be quite as high as some previous reports indicated, though still no joke. I still worry far, far more about Covid and in some regions, TB and measles. Those are contagious, as well as mess you up real bad.
