If the USA collapsed do you think States could end up joining Canada?

Now imagine that, the USA collapsed and experienced a big financial crash. Few had faith in US institutions or the people who led them. As a result, some US states (and maybe even the entirety of the USA) contemplated joining Canada. They reasoned it would quickly end the crisis and lead to stability.
Canada promised them seats in their House of Commons as well as use of Canadian currency.
If the USA collapsed do you think States could end up joining Canada?
Aimer1980@reddit
We share an unprotected border with a nation who has the largest military in the world, and outnumber us 10 to 1. We share the largest freshwater source in the world, and have large swaths of agricultural land and huge amounts of natural resources. When things get hard, and they will eventually, I fully expect them to march over the border and take over everything. I don't believe an economic collapse will stop that eventuality. If anything, large amounts of civil unrest might cause it to happen sooner than expected... It scares the shit out of me that, with the wrong unhinged president, it could happen within my lifetime.
Nikkei_Simmer@reddit
This didn't age well. It became prophetic.

Aimer1980@reddit
yeah....
WWCSTAR@reddit
I just stumbled upon this post and saw your comment. 1 year later, and the very thing you mentioned is being talked about by an "unhinged president". How do you feel now? As an American I'm nervous but I imagine this could be an even worse feeling for you. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you see this.
Aimer1980@reddit
As a left-leaning middle aged mom, who has been a lifelong pacifist, I'm angry beyond words. People are not taking his threats seriously. I'm starting to watch what i say on social media. We've started the reign of hilter 2.0, the oligarchs are coming out of the woodwork, and it is beyond fucked up. Preservation of self vs preservation of country is a huge mind fuck.
WinIll755@reddit
Wait, wasn't this literally the plot of the great war in fallout?
feverfaucet@reddit
Yeah, Canada was annexed by the U.S. or Fallout’s version of the U.S. I think at one point Russia took over Alaska as well. Anyway then everything was nuked lol.
ispq@reddit
Skaparmannen@reddit
That's stupid. An attack on Alaska would trigger article 5 and Canada aswell as the rest of NATO would declare war and co-operate with the US.
Does NATO not exist in Fallout?
MutedShenanigans@reddit
NATO does exist in Fallout, however the person you replied to was a bit erroneous in the timeline. Canada allowed US troops on her soil to safeguard oil pipelines, however those troops were used heavy handedly to do more than that, and increasing protests/riots regarding US troops as well as an sabotage attempt on a pipeline became the justification for annexation. The lore afaik doesn't go much into how NATO or other militaries were involved in the Sino American War.
Presumably NATO was effectively just the US and Canada at this point, Europe had been decimated with its war with the middle east which included a nuclear exchange, and the United Nations disbanded. Under these bleak circumstances, one can see how Canadians might chafe under US military occupation.
Also note that Article 5 does not expressly mandate the level of military support an individual member must provide if it is invoked, indeed it is up to the individual state to take such action as it deems necessary.
Whether or not Canadians contributed much support on the battlefield in Alaska or mainland China is somewhat immaterial, it was the United States whose recently developed power armor that turned the tide of the war. Canada's main role was possession of natural resources useful for the war effort.
semoriil@reddit
I don't remember mentions of NATO in Fallout...
But anyway, the US in terms of military power is more than the rest of NATO combined, so is it relevant here? Someone brave enough to attack the US directly, sure is not afraid of the rest of NATO.
Kenobi5792@reddit
And the war lasted like 3 hours because of the nukes (I don't remember the exact length of time because I only played Fallout 3 and it was quite a while ago).
And the thing I'm more concerned about is that it feels like a huge war is on the way very soon, given what it is happening right now around the world.
creepindacellar@reddit
you didn't let your Vault-Tec membership run out did you?
semoriil@reddit
Does anyone build such vaults now? I mean those big ones to accommodate hundreds if not thousands of people at once for years, not a few weeks like many old Soviet vaults.
AFAIK only Russia has one or two such big vaults. Also there are rumors that China is building them.
semoriil@reddit
Some time ago I suspected that Elon Musk's The Boring Company is actually his back-up plan in case of WW3 - if SpaceX fails to develop Starship in time.
If you can dig tunnels fast and cheap, you can do the same this vaults after all.
Now I think he is too dumb for that, but who knows...

semoriil@reddit
Yes, though this is similar to Russian Yamantau bunker complex, but I mean something not meant for the top government officials.
semoriil@reddit
Yes, war is coming, but it is a different kind, not like old WW2, more like many sides each for itself, so total nuclear apocalypse is less likely.
Efficient_Star_1336@reddit
Russia was a U.S. ally (or at least neutral, one of the playable characters in the first game was a Russian diplomat).
It was China, and they didn't take over Alaska. The (implied) story is that war over oil kicked off, despite the fact that nobody really needed it anymore due to nuclear energy, then China invaded Alaska and America invaded China, and the war was starting to turn against China (the invasion of Alaska failed) when the nukes went off.
wine-e-jacques@reddit
I tried to see if I qualified to immigrate as a known and listed political prisoner (thanks diplomat cousins in socialist and communist countries in the 1980s!) and was basically told to go f*ck myself - albeit in that nice Canadian way you all speak.

This is exactly what will happen. Plus Canada is full of pussies. Let's keep it real here. Americans can buy gins from wal mart and most Canadians don't even own a real knife let alone a fire arm. America would fucking annihilate us in a month.

Canadian and I fully agree with you. For all of you who do not live here, it was our current Prime Minister's father (Pierre Elliot Trudeau, also our PM at one point) had thus to say about living next to the US (first quote here):
https://www.brainyquote.com/authors/pierre-trudeau-quotes
There are things we are friendly about with each other, or have in common, but some not so much, like tarrifs over softwood lumber. Yes I agree we would get annexed, not the other way around. The Northwest Passage is opening and I anticipate that will be the upcoming first major bone of contention....we say it is our own internal waters, other countries (including the US, cough, cough) do not recognize this. And knowing our track record , we will be caught with our proverbial pants down in this.
SacredGeometry9@reddit
I think Canada will claim the Northwest Passage, and broker a deal with the US for preferential access in exchange for military support to back up the claim.

shatteredoctopus@reddit
I think if the USA collapsed, Canada would not remain a viable entity for long. Lots of cultural contagion across the border, and we don't pull our own weight as far as defence goes. I could see more regional areas that have more in common working together (ie parts of Idaho and Alberta have more in common with each other than say Idaho and Florida.)
pm_me_all_dogs@reddit
This is the correct answer. Canada will balkanize along with the US. It's safe to say that some former Canada and some former US will end up as a territory together
CouldHaveBeenAPun@reddit

So would Minnesota.
CouldHaveBeenAPun@reddit

individual_328@reddit
Quebec nationalism would drastically increase and they wouldn't play nice with anybody.
CouldHaveBeenAPun@reddit
Nationalism increasing? Sure, I can see that happening easily. As for the rest? Not so much. A lot of people around feel a connection with communities just south of the border, a lot of families have ties in the states down south too.
ConnectInevitable176@reddit
Families spanned Russia & Ukraine as well.
Adjective-Noun-0001@reddit
I don't see this as a real possibility at all; but how about this... Canada splits into East Canada and West Canada; then West Canada absorbs all the west coast US states as provinces, likewise for the east coast states joining East Canada. Alberta joins the Christian States of America; which is everything down the middle from Montana to Floribama.
So we now have two countries that are as close or closer than the EU countries- both still use $CAD and allow free travel from one to the other but do not recognize CSA passports. Only real difference is that East Canada would have more of a trade relationship with Europe, and West Canada with east Asia. CSA gets the gulf coast, and part of the arctic coast to trade with their ally Russia.
rosiofden@reddit
Cultural contagion, you're not kidding. The amount of Canadians who were barking "NoT mY PrEsiDeNt" in 2017 was troubling. Like, no, guys, he's not - he's the president of a whole other country. Also, we don't even have presidents, so...

The United States will burn humanity off the planet before it collapses. The largest military in the world isn't gonna collapse before it's used it's might to take resources from its enemies, and then it's allies unfortunately.
Mr_Black_y_so_hotbro@reddit
and you think you'll successfully take from your enemies without resistance? you do know you will be banished to the other world by hellfire missiles, yes? or your one of those who believe in american exceptionalism, that you'll save an all-out nuclear war?
Unusual_Dealer9388@reddit
Bruh I don't even live in the states 🤣 I'm saying the collapse of the US would be concurrent with the collapse of the entire planet.
BlockFun@reddit
Can you point to an example in history where that was the case? Because large empires come and go throughout history and the nations around them can often remain unchanged.
Unusual_Dealer9388@reddit
Can you point to a historical empire that had intercontinental ballistic missiles, fighter jets, advanced ai and nukes? We are progressing at an exponential rate. We can look back at history and see trends because it took hundreds or thousands of years for significant change to occur in technology. Those trends get murky the more technology you add.
BlockFun@reddit
How do those things correlate with the rest of the world collapsing? Like, yeah, US has that stuff and so do multiple countries; the Soviet Union had nuclear weapons when it collapsed; Poland is still here.
Just-a-Leprechaun@reddit
American megalomania, basically
Its_Matt_03@reddit
Buddy if the us collapses Canada is absolutely fucked. The most powerful military on earth doesn’t just despawn, and Canada’s military is dogshit.
This means any random war lord that pops up would be able to successfully strike into canada. And this isn’t taking the economic impact.
RichardsLeftNipple@reddit
If the US collapses it might be too busy a fighting civil war with itself to use its resources on Canada.
It was the case with Abraham Lincoln during the civil war.
Its_Matt_03@reddit
Only a fraction of its military would obliterate our military. The NYPD alone could be a serious threat.
-WLP-@reddit
I always thought that if the US collapsed into individual states, there wouldn't be a national military force anymore since the soldiers that make up that military would be more inclined to defend their home state from other hostile states.
A US collapse involving a civil war would see it collapse in on itself in red vs blue way before it turned its eyes vs Canada.

Most of New England would probably move to the other side pretty quickly. We have much more in common with our neighbors to the north than the states to our south.
Efficient_Star_1336@reddit
America isn't a collection of states, it's a collection of localities. Rural Maine wants to be part of New Hampshire wants to take Upstate New York with it and then join all of Michigan except Detroit. Likewise, Austin would dig a tunnel to CA and declare itself Californian, if it could.
Without a giant military and preexisting government keeping those borders intact, new borders would emerge. The cities would govern themselves (well, the more functional ones would), and rural and suburban areas would no longer have anything to do with nearby cities. We'd be back to city-states and fiefdoms.
amaturecynic@reddit
Totally agree. Human rights? Check. Maple Syrup? Check. You're in!
sentinel46@reddit
The United States will probably have annexed Canada before it collapses.
Anti-Hippy@reddit
Canadian here. Canada's current economy is a literal house of cards built from a toxic brew of real estate speculation and "Technically not slave" low-wage labour derived from convincing immigrants to arrive, then working them to death while extracting all their wages for rent and food. That and some extractive industries. Canada collapses well before the US hits a boiling point in almost any scenario I can imagine. Sorry!
mister_pants@reddit
That's surprising. I would expect a literal house of cards to be built from cards.
NottaLottaOcelot@reddit
Perhaps our economy would be better if we sold playing cards? Right now it’s just housing musical chairs.
forgot-my-toothbrush@reddit
All housing built after 2021 is made with particle board, playing cards, silly string, and gum. These houses cost ~$1.8million, and any new development that isn't 80% sold prior to completion is simply burned to the ground.

DancesWithBeowulf@reddit
No. When things are bad enough for the US to collapse, Canada won’t exist either. Other than island states, I doubt any modern nation state will survive.
As social and economic complexity wind down, and as global trade and travel slow to a trickle, we’ll probably all revert to feudal or city state systems.
We’ll care more about the next town over than what’s happening on the other side of the continent.
johnnyscumbag2000@reddit
Islands like New Zealand sure. But every other island on earth is either going to be a wet bulb zone or collapse from lack of arable land compared to population.
rontonsoup__@reddit
Most island nations don’t need much arable land and have a seafood based diet.
johnnyscumbag2000@reddit
Seafood stocks worldwide are already crashing.
A billion snow crabs just died and they had to stop fishing for anchovies because the stock is so low this year. These are only the most recent on a long list of a combination of over Fishing and climate disruptions.
Fishing is one of the most difficult ways to provide adequate sustenance, and most certainly will not support modern island population sizes for more than a month in a worst case scenario.
They'll need arable land they don't have, and will sadly be abandoned.
One_Roof_101@reddit
Australia is a island aswell
johnnyscumbag2000@reddit
I understand your sentiment but Australia is actually a continent. One that's already experiencing the effects of climate change.
One_Roof_101@reddit
It’s both
parastro@reddit
Right, islands are not as isolated as one might think. This is something I learned in island archaeology. As far back as early humans and Neanderthals, islands have exchanged populations with other islands and their respective mainlands. Even New Zealand was connected to the rest of Polynesia by boats.
LordTuranian@reddit
Exactly. Because all the shit that has caused the USA to collapse has caused Canada to collapse as well. So if things get worse in the USA, things will also get worse in Canada.
lyradunord@reddit
No...we'd balkanize and china (and others, but they've been doing this throughout the world) would take advantage
mr_n00n@reddit
Do people really not understand how interconnected the world is? There is no scenario where the US collapses and Canada, or anywhere else for that matter, remains great.
If people lose faith in US institutions, including the dollar and US treasuries, then entire global economy is destroyed. It's possible to image a world that moves away from US hegemony (though that looks increasingly unlikely), but if it happened suddenly the consequences would be unimaginable.
I'm no radical patriot, but as a practical matter, the US remains an incredibly, if not still the most, powerful nation. This means that as collapse hits the US, it will hit most other places in an even more extreme matter.
There are many past examples of collapse were a hegemon falls and people flee to other areas, but in our current work things are different because of the incredible interconnection between everything in the world. This can lead to greater resilience in many cases, but it also means that when the system really collapses the results are catastrophic across the board.
catsdelicacy@reddit
Why in the world would a country annex a nation with 10 times its population?
There are only 35 million Canadians, there are 350 million Americans.
BigJobsBigJobs@reddit
The US will probably collapse for thousands of miles in every direction. Spherically. An uncontrolled demolition.
The same problems Canada has that the U.S. will just merge. Same genocidal post-colonialist neoliberal uber-capitalist philosophies. Same wackadoodle xian loonies running wild with guns. Same scum at the top pretty much.
Before that, if the UK collapses into the black called England (probably soon) and the new interests of Scotland, Wales and United Ireland start flexing their Euro muscles, I would think that both U.S. and Canadian neoliberals might consider hegemony; a polite fascist merger. Not to rule, but to cooperate. Joint exploitation, each country's corporate masters' needs served effortlessly and without all that pesky international negotiation. 'You want a pieline from here to there? No problem. We'll give you the land even if someone else owns it.'
The elites endure the continental and global collapse as best possible together and profit!
bmeisler@reddit
I think it’s more likely that, god forbid, the Republicans win the House, Senate and President in 24, and implement their authoritarian 2025 plan (look it up), we might see some heavily blue states start ignoring Federal law and the Supreme Court, and effectively secede in all but name.

Canada is still under the British Crown whole the USA officially broke away from what is now the United Kingdom in 1783. For that reason alone, I do not see the USA rejoining the UK for any reason. BadAsBroccoli@reddit
But would the UK come to Canada's rescue if the US made threatening movements toward her?

My guess (as a non American) is that the most likely outcome is likely to see a mix of outcomes.
Joining Canada will be attractive for some of the more northerly states, especially smaller ones.
States that send tax revenues to washing to subsidise other states I think would be more likely to consider independence - California, for example.
On the other hand states that receive federal subsidies are going to find themselves with a big shortfall (Texas gets the most subsidy - $36 billion a year IIRC) so I think for them they'd want to preserve the union if possible, they'd consider joining another country but would be reluctant to go independent as the resulting tax increases would likely be political suicide for whomever brought them in.
I'm aware this is a simplistic take and I'm probably missing a ton of information, so I'm not confident about this.

Anything capable of collapsing the U.S. government would have collapsed Canada and Western Europe months prior. The U.S., as a power bloc, is more than just the United States itself, and virtually every world leader therein knows the score.

What we could do is just split this huge nation. The authoritarian fascists can have their little fiefdom of lowly serfs and high lords. And those who actually like and want to continue living in a constitutional republic wouldn't need to fear Civil War II. Plus, we could have reasonable gun laws, women could have their bodily autonomy back, and our kids would be able to read books that don't track-train them into closed off mindsets.

From what I have been hearing, Canada is ngmi too
cabalavatar@reddit
ngmi?
dakinekine@reddit
Not going to make it
chimeraoncamera@reddit
We will take Maine, that is all.
cabalavatar@reddit
We will fine you a lot of burned buildings.
bustavius@reddit
“Join” is one way to say it.
redjedi182@reddit
If the US dollar collapses the world as we know it doesn’t stay as we know it.
johnyfleet@reddit
Fucking terrible idea. Be part of full socialist dictatorship? Yep no!!!
imminentjogger5@reddit
what makes you think Canada is going any better?
shawmahawk@reddit
Canada has a currency that is systemically depressed to maintain its “shining” export markets. Canada has also sold the mineral rights to all manner of resources underground to various foreign (government owned in many cases - looking at sinopec here) companies, without thinking for a moment about the negative impacts that could have long term. Now we have sovereignty issues all over the place.
If America collapses, Canada disintegrates
thespambox@reddit
No
Bgal31089@reddit
Lol no. We will be forced to join our owners: China.
Hot_Standard_6024@reddit
Never. Canadians hate Americans. I was married to a Canadian for 12 years until we split ways. They hate our fucking guts. The states will dissolve into their own countries and we will be a huddles mass of collective tribes waging civil war with each other for decades.
TvFloatzel@reddit
Yea no. There is a reason why some people joke that Canada is an unofficially 51-63 States of the United States, especially at the border. If the US goes, Canada does. The same for Mexico or at least the border states of Mexico.
GizmoCaCa-78@reddit
The crater the USA leaves when she goes will probably swallow the entire continent
a_cycle_addict@reddit
Nope lol
ampnewb41@reddit
To quote someone "If the US collapses, the only currency is beans and bullets".
I think this is accurate
OneNineSevenNine@reddit
I think we will see a North American Union before we see a US collapse.
lobsterdog666@reddit
far more likely the US annexes Canada, or at least the part of Canada with the fresh water, LONG before it collapses.
freshapocalypse@reddit
No because as much as I hate to admit it we will collapse too.
