Spare boots.
photojournalistus@reddit
Got two pairs of Vessi-brand boots (one stays in car). Expensive, but they look cool and are 100% waterproof. Gotta stay stylish!
Last_Day1997@reddit
I always tell people this hack: if you find boots you like buy two pairs. Wear them alternate days.
They will last far far longer than wearing one pair till it wears out and repeating.
2 concurrently > 2 sequentially
By a large margin.
MoKatRed@reddit
Giving them time to heel? (Duck)
DeFiClark@reddit
Many sole materials deteriorate faster if you don’t wear them then if worn regularly.
Last_Day1997@reddit
Yup. And they get to dry out completely between wearings.
And there is no "Oh God what do I do" if you have a boot blowout / failure or they are soaked etc. You've always got a ready to go broken in alternate pair.
Mothersilverape@reddit
And shoe and boot laces too!
Very-Confused-Walrus@reddit
I have hot weather boots and cold weather boots, and intermediate weather boots (like freezing to maybe 20 degrees they are pretty warm and cozy) this did remind me I do need to get new boots

I just bought one of those toilet seats that fit over a standard five-gallon bucket ($12-$30 on Amazon).

Reliance's Fold-A-Bag was great for this (I have one I bought over 10 years ago), but it's no longer produced and the newer Reliance foldable water-containers have been reported to be poorly made and often leak.

Antibiotics. Unfortunately they only let you get them with a prescription in the US, afaik. If there is a way to get them please let me know as i would like to have a stock just in case.
AnonymousWoman456@reddit
Check out a company called JASE Medical. We bought a set of 4 different antibiotics.
photojournalistus@reddit
Wow! They sell a starter kit with five broad-spectrum antibiotics. Didn't know this was possible without a prescription. A bit pricey, though, at $269. Ready to buy, but wondering if there's more economical option in the US.
Morgue724@reddit
Another good one people forget is have a power bank I try to keep on in every vehicle, power outages or bigger events having a way to charge electronics is always useful, also get a free ebook reader for your phone and plenty to read, informational and enjoyment both can prove helpful and epub format takes up almost no room on the phone and don't need service to read.. an emp may kill your phone but a snow storm wont.
photojournalistus@reddit
I got a really good one off Amazon for about $35 (cheap, "generic" import-brand, but works great!). Triple-solar panel folds out and charged the entire battery in a couple hours.
BadCorvid@reddit
I have seven, three of which will charge from solar. I got one for my mom in Florida after her phone ran out of charge after a hurricane.
Morgue724@reddit
Honestly my family and friends have used them more than I have. Buy they are there charged, checked and waiting.
SmuglyGaming@reddit
Seconded. I have like 5 I use for road trips or camping (posting from my tent rn actually) but I keep them charged always just in case of a power outage or an emergency where I need to leave without time to charge my phone
Morgue724@reddit
Only thing I need to buy is just a small folding solar charger just in case.
Jdmisra81@reddit
Ive got at least a dozen of the little ones. It constantly blows my mind how many people dont have one. Ive saved the day so many times just having one in my pocket when someones phone died. Ive started giving inexpensive ones as gifts. Even one that can only charge your phone halfway from dead could be a lifesaver...
silasmoeckel@reddit
Just back from an overnight campout 2 parents didn't have phone chargers and apparently phones nearly dead by morning.
I have my multipurpose jump starter battery pack. It was wirelessly charging my phone, charged up theirs and think I was still over 60% after deflating my air mattresses.
Each vehicle has one, they charge off USB so it's pretty easy to keep them charged up just in case.
BaldyCarrotTop@reddit
For FEMA it's apparently a camp stove.

Batteries for things that rarely need Batteries.... Case in point, I finally had an Aimpoint battery die. Ever try to find those locally? So now I have those, lots of 2032, 9V, and other random things that need Batteries but I don't think much of using. Now they may go bad before I use them but I atleast want a chance that I got a spare.
photojournalistus@reddit
Yeah, I gotta lotta coin batteries in reserve. Also about 100 in every size in IP67 containers.
SmuglyGaming@reddit
Even basic AA and AAA batteries. I keep a nice little stockpile. I grab new ones whenever they go on sale and slowly cycle through the old ones whenever an Xbox controller or my camping lights need batteries
I do need to get some 9v and D cells though, thanks for the reminder

New_Worldliness235@reddit
Salt of various types. Iodized. Epsom. Regular table salt, pickling salts, etc.
Basic pure soap - non scented, not antibacterial. Just plain old soap in bar form.
Animal feed and/or baits.
Caffeine that isn't just coffee - most people have caffeine daily, and an interruption to that routine can trigger some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms at a less than opportune time.
Skin care - Bag Balm, Vaseline, Aquaphor. Skin barrier care is important. Stuff to treat and prevent diaper rash, chub rub, yeast overgrowth, fungal infections. Most people focus on a big trauma kit and neglect to have an adequate supply of daily use items. Skin breakdown opens the body up to infections - swamp butt and swamp foot can seriously impact a person fairly quickly if not prevented or treated.
Socks. This one is oddly specific, but socks can serve many purposes. Clean, dry socks make a world of difference in all situations. They also can wear out fast so having enough replacements is a good idea.
Baking sodas, baking powder. Again: multipurpose.
This one doesn't impact me, personally, but I think it's relevant depending on what someone is prepping for: eyeglasses. Several backups. They break over time and if someone is wanting to prep for some sort of teotwawki situation, and that person needs glasses to see - probably should start getting multiple backups. Seems like this could also be traded in that sort of situation as well. Even non-rx readers are helpful for some folks because they are better than nothing.
Shoes - again, this is specific to a person prepping for a significant shtf or teotwawki situation but shoes are probably underrated. Most footwear depends heavily on industrial supply chains and unless someone knows how to make their own high quality footwear, it's probably a decent prep if your foot is finished growing. You can easily and fairly cheaply acquire sufficient backups through second-hand shopping. Even the best shoes/boots doesn't last forever, especially if you wear them daily.
There's more that I could list, but I'll stop here for now.

For people who live in communities of homes on small lots as our is (.3 acres), sanitation is overlooked and critically important. What happens when the toilets won't function?
Tough to prepare for. Easy if the time scale is less than a week, but in the event of an infrastructure collapse virtually unsolvable.
Thoughts??
grumbol@reddit (OP)
The old solution is a 6' deep hole and before the convenience of toilet paper it was water and your left hand.

Feminine hygiene supplies. Even if you don't have female family members they can be useful. Tampons make great bullet wound plugs in a pinch and pads can be used as absorbent bandages. They also make great trade items as well.

I see many things here that are "nice," but are they essential? "Important"? I may put the work d important to be crucial. Many of these things could be found after the fact if wanted.. not needed.
JennaSais@reddit
An alternate way to use the loo. Whether that's a bucket system, a shovel and a patch of dirt, a camping toilet, etc. Also get a little handheld bidet so you have something else to use if you run out of TP.
Xsiah@reddit
so.. just a bucket?
Skalgrin@reddit
Not really... Just a bucket is a great recipe for health disaster. One of my fears (long before Ukraine Feb 24 2023) is nuclear explosion or catastrophe, which means I am also sideprepping for "stay in basement for 3 weeks" scenario.
3 weeks of 4+ humans shitting themselves from stress, fear and canned food in damn single small room won't get covered by "just a bucket".
You need stuff to neutralise smell and biochemical processes, you need a way of disposal or storage, you need a way for clean and disinfect. You need a way to limit smell and give privacy.
I chose a slaked lime as odour and biochemy retardant, which seemed like a good idea until I inspected it roughly year later, when it seems it turned from poweder into solid stone. So now I am at "back to drawing board" phase.
Xsiah@reddit
Okay but regular toilets will work with just water pressure. Why not just build a bathroom in your basement? The bucket isn't to shit in, it's for the water or whatever you're using to flush with.
Skalgrin@reddit
Toilets won't work if you have common sewage, not only it will fill up and stop working, it can actually send shit from higher houses to your house through liquid pressure. Furthermore our sewage uses pumps couple hundred meters downstream from us, those would definitely not work, speeding up the "clogged/full" scenario. But that's us...
And basement toilet would not work even today for me as it is actually below our sewage outtake level.
Luckily tho I have repurposed cesspit, which I use to collect rain water, and I can redo it back to cesspit easily. But that's postponing of inevitable only and would still require me to use aboveground toilet. That's fine unless NBC factors in.
Last but not least if I repurpose my rain water tank back to cesspit, I would no longer have enough rain water to be able to "waste it" on flushing toilet.
Xsiah@reddit
YMMV, but for a lot of houses there are backflow systems in place, and if it's a short term situation then there's unlikely to be a problem.
If you're looking at something like Ukraine, being prepared to sit in your basement for a couple of weeks is not realistic for reasons other than the toilet.
Skalgrin@reddit
I have covered air ventilation, heating, boiling, sleeping, food, water, basic hygiene (minus toilet) light and even an emergency exit...
Toilet and radio are WIP. Toilet would work if I would get fresh lime supply beforehand - but that's not going to happen, therefore back again. Now its still possible but terrible chore to prep the hardened lime for it
It would be stressful, low to no comfort, but we would make it as long as we could keep our minds more or less together.
I hope in 50y from now I will laugh that we never needed it and how "stupid" I was.
Last but not least, echnically in MAD we would be doomed 3 weeks later than majority, but in same shit just little bit later. But in less serious fuckup it's a decent shelter...
(And in the hypothetical scenario we would need to hide there, I know there would be things not working out like intended or serious issues not covered. Still we would be in better scenario than most of our neighbours.
Xsiah@reddit
Is your house able to withstand shelling?
Skalgrin@reddit
Brick'n'concrete, but nothing to stop direct (or close) hit. I am aware of the limits, I know that "just" a 50+ ton tank driving through the street and firing it's weapon could fuck up the static. I know that a house fire above the basement would threaten us seriously due to oxygen consumption (of large fire) and co poisoning.
I know that would the house above collapse we would have problems with evacuation (the rubble covers larger area than original house) and possibly with air ventilation.
I know that direct hit to our house would be end, and hit within close range would have high probability of an end anyway. I know that if a tank would drive through our house it would crush us under itself as would the floor brake beneath it
But while it's not a solution (frankly would front move to us, plans A to F are to evacuate) it's partial improvement giving us higher chance of seeing shit through in a scenario we got surprised and got caught with our pants down (or were unable to perform evacuation).
If I can limit a chance of becoming collateral damage to shrapnel, and rifle or autocankn fire by hiding under terrain level, I do it.

One I rarely see: some sort of air freshener/filter/cleaner. If you're anticipating a situation where you're bunkered down for a few days or a week due to weather, or other problem where you have to conserve power, you're going to need something for the air. Not only to clean up stale air, but also cooking, bathroom and other odors. Low power also means less air circulation in a lot of homes.
Having several people in your home in a bug-in scenario, you'll be thankful to have a few air sponges or cleaners on hand in an overused bathroom, for example.

Extra panties and socks. Because if you ever get into a situation where your washing machine doesn't work for a week or two, you'll be glad for them. Really glad. Plus, they take up very little space.
Other things: Can opener (non-electric) plus extra, nail clippers, extra blades for your razor, extra soap and a box of matches or a lighter. Safety pins are also good to have. Tampons and/or pads if you're a menstruation female or have some among your immediate family.

I second dog food…gotta prep for them as well. We keep @200 pounds of kibble on hand in gamma vaults for our 3. And canned…(having them well-stocked means our food lasts longer too!)

18 months plus according to the research I did some years back. Longer if stored correctly. We have 5 vaults and cycle though that in about a year. I also drop in a few oxygen absorbers…and don’t open the vaults until it’s time to use them…

Like, yeah if you're just prepping for yourself and you don't mind rice and beans every day then go for it. But I'm prepping to feed a family of six-seven including at least four adults who are used to eating good food and a few children under five who are also used to food tasting a certain way.

More generally, clothing for the different types of weather and extremities, that will enable you to perform.
Back to the boots like a good pair of knee high rain boots, work boots, good socks to go with them.
Having a way to communicate other than phones is a biggie. Walkie talkie and/or CB radio, feel free to go H.A.M (hehe) if you have the time and money.
Entertainment of various forms, passive and interactive, electronic and non-electronic, so like personally I would just sail the high seas in search of your favorite shows and movies and download them to an SSD, thumb drives work or SD cards work as well but they're more volatile a storage method, SSD way to go
I never played a game of dungeons & dragons in my life, but I sure as hell bought a physical copy, and I'm now working with chat GPT to find out what like all the classic but not too expensive addition/addons are, like I feel like that game is just endless entertainment from what I understand. (Also know that I think about it, The Venn diagram of people in this subreddit who also play d&d could very well be a circle if I had to guess, if anyone sees this and has any d&d suggestions I would be very grateful! Thanks!). I always manage to digress, but back to the entertainment, yeah like games, books, all that stuff. They're harder to find now because you have to use your hands?! but I've been looking for those like old school '90s one game devices that run on batteries
Oh damn also batteries! If you have some kind of renewable setup your safe probably with mostly rechargeable batteries but good to still have a fresh set of normal ones on hand. Energy in general
Ok that's more things than you're asking I think
JennaSais@reddit
Definitely a basically endless selection! I wouldn't go too crazy looking for additional books right away, unless you plan on getting into it seriously, because once you understand how these games work, and if you're going to be bored in SHTF anyway, you can always get creative with it and run more ad hoc games without sticking to a book too much. I would just sit on additional purchases for a bit, do everything you can to learn about it, and try a campaign. Geek & Sundry is a good channel to watch to see other people playing it in action. They have a (starter playlist)[https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT955yt0W4QP5VD4TwLQvV3EiM&si=kqIya90t3ScQ8scD] and loads of other content besides.
xPlus2Minus1@reddit
Thank you! It's funny I don't even know how to ask the questions properly because I don't know the phrasing enough / the structure of the game to ask the right question but what I mean is I'm not necessarily looking for like ideas or direction, if I understand correctly it's a LARP game so the game goes as far as my consciousness does but I was thinking more if there are like good things to have like for example I know there's a dungeon master (harmontown is soooo good) and they give out character sheets and stuff, like I'm wondering if there's reusable character sheets or like 3D printable figurines or something I don't know just like things to enhance the game, I figure also that I probably will end up getting very into it, I don't know why I never did, I think I just didn't know what it was (again shout out harmontown)
When you say ad hoc, what do you mean by that? As in I know what ad hoc means logically structurally but how does that translate to dungeons and dragons? Is that just different people? Different 'campaigns' I believe they're called?
Again thanks!!!
JennaSais@reddit
Ad hoc kinda means "on an as-needed basis," so in this context, what I would do is just write out the bones of a campaign myself, draw a dungeon for myself out on graph paper (or you might use a random dungeon generator online and print a bunch out ahead of time) and otherwise kinda make it up as I need to from there. Once you know the people you're playing with it can get pretty silly and random a lot of times as is (people NEVER hit rooms in the order you want them to lol), so there's already lots of improvisation involved in gameplay.

Are we still talking about contraceptives?
shikkonin@reddit
Most people go their whole life without ever even seeing one.
Bebe_Bleau@reddit
Me too! My experience was that the powered ones were more trouble than the manuals

If you opened alot of cans, they are worth it. But the random can here or there isn't at all.

Hand tools that have been replaced by power tools. Plenty of nails. And I think the most important is knowledge, if you don't stock up on knowledge all the preps in the world won't save you.

Tooth paste, tooth brushes, shampoo bars. Or a few bottles extra, cheap to buy an extra a week, not just for prep but when money gets tight also.

Definitely soaps and such. Because of fat rationing in WW2 soap was in high demand. Lots of things could cause the same phenomenon, it's crazy to think about how interconnected the web if industry is.

I think some people who rely on MRE type foods fail to grasp just how remarkably unhealthy that type of food is. I'd recommend only having a few servings of those types of things in a go bag. For your home stockpile do rice, beans, oats, sugar, salt, spices, pasta, etc. It may be boring and even uncomfortable to eat that stuff long term, but MRE's are pretty much guaranteed to give you major medical problems if consumed for more than a few weeks.

I stock one replacement of common car parts, like spark plugs, oil, oil filter, headlight bulbs, air filter, etc. Prepping isn't just for the end-of-the-world. You can have fuel and everything but maybe stores didn't get replenished due to some storm and your headlights failed...
