I couldn't tell you how many times I've changed my mind on an item or items before reaching the checkout, and even though I worked retail for a bit, I am a big "puter". If I change my mind, I put the stuff where I happen to be standing (unless it's cold then I find the nearest cold place). So that means "just put it back and you will be refunded" wouldn't work.

It's hilarious because something similar to this has already happened. During riots a few years ago there were a bunch of people that tried robbing an Amazon Go store (Amazon's grocery chain), but what they didn't know is whatever they tried stealing was automatically charged to their Amazon account as soon as they left the store. Classic stuff.

the Amazon Go stores (I only know of the one in Seattle that I believe recently closed), uses this. sensors detect whenever you take something off of the shelf, and (I believe) also "refund" the price when you place things back where they were. you have to login with an app when you enter, and when you leave, it automatically "rings you up".

That's not actually how it works as shuffling money like that is wildely inefficientand makes a crap load of room for errors. It does scan the items when you grab them but it doesn't charge you right away, what it does is it adds up your prices and then charges you when you leave the store You do have to be connected with an Amazon account and card

There's the Amazon Go concept stores that do this.  I dont know the names but in some nicer country(ies?) like Sweden they have scanners on the carts that you just scan your items as you put them in and pay at the end.

There are some places that have this. As soon as you put something in your shopping cart, it tallies the total. If you change your mind and take it out of your shopping cart, it deducts it. When you leave the store, the total cost of everything in your basket is deducted from your chosen method of payment.
