Slap bracelets are coming back?
Most of these aren’t like the ones from back in the day. Still awesome though!

My 4yo got one the other day as a prize at school. She was stoked on it.

We've had them around my house for a few years now. I like to use them to secure rolls of art paper and wrapping paper. They work really well for that. Whenever my kid leaves one lying around, I use it for something. She was shocked to realize I had been using them. She was also shocked to realize she hadn't noticed they were missing.

Can't find it, but I recently read Motorola is coming out with a watch/phone based on the whole slapper idea.

In POG form?

They sure are, my kids get them all the time. They were a little surprised at the…enthusiasm I used when slapping them on

I was pretty stoked slapping one of those on my wrist. I get it! I’d be the same way if I had kids.

strippersandcocaine@reddit

I should clarify I was snapping it on their wrists baba
View on Reddit #13244411

artificialavocado@reddit

Did that fact that you thought they were cool suddenly make them not like them anymore lol?
View on Reddit #13251078

strippersandcocaine@reddit

Luckily they’re little enough to still think I’m the coolest. We’ll see how long that lasts

I too would be enthusiastic about slapping them on my kids wrists. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the video of the guy who gets ultra excited when he threw the stone across the frozen pond and he went bonkers when he heard it? Yup, that was me when I found these at Target. I spared my girlfriend the toot that he made. Only difference.

Mine, too.

*Coming* back?!?! As an elementary educator I can tell you these have been back since before the pandemic.

I had those even as a boy, they were cool af. But I remember someone saying one of those could cut your arm off and so our school banned them. But the girls always had like 100's of them in cheeta and neon, ect.
View on Reddit #13241546

aahymsaa@reddit

The potential to accidentally slit your wrist and die was also why they were banned at my school. Were you in central Florida? If not, it’s wild how these urban legends got around before the Internet!

Touch-of-the-Tisms@reddit

west coast, yea slit your wrist or cut off your arm
View on Reddit #13264052

darthduder666@reddit (OP)

I was living in East Providence, RI. It is wild how things would go “viral” prior to the internet.

They were banned from my school in 2nd grade for being a tool of Satan. Gotta love Church of Christ!
View on Reddit #13242166

Fight_the_bastards@reddit

Satan: reduced from *literally* causing the downfall of man to…making slap bracelets.

MaddyKet@reddit

The rumor I heard was someone choked on one?! And that was why they were banned. That’s actually really stupid, but I was 8 so I didn’t question it.
View on Reddit #13242088

darthduder666@reddit (OP)

I had heard kids were cutting theirs wrists with them because they were defective? I know they got banned at our school before that came out, and kids were always getting busted for having them.

The ones from the 80s were made from metal tape measurers, the kind that stretches in and out from the plastic housing. The edges weren't smoothed down and if the fabric casing frayed at the ends you could get cut badly.
View on Reddit #13259614

artificialavocado@reddit

Yeah they were supposedly trading them for blowjobs or some nonsense.
View on Reddit #13251139

darthduder666@reddit (OP)

Hell yeah man. I remember having some of these around the same time I had a super bright neon wind breaker. The fact that they were banned made them cooler and more desirable.

My kids got a few for Halloween this year. Nerd alert: My favorite slap bracelet as a kid was one that was a ruler. Useful *and* cool. I grew up to be an engineer 😉

I wonder how long it will take schools to ban them? I wish jelly bracelets would come back. I could really impress my kids with my designs. Same for embroidery floss bracelets. I was super good at those.
View on Reddit #13258160

darthduder666@reddit (OP)

Maybe not this time around. I wonder if the people who would make the decision to ban them are the same people who wore them as kids?

yesss!

Apprehensive-Donkey7@reddit

Fuck yes. My 1990-91 was dominated by slap bracelets, teenage mutant ninja turtles, body glove and stussy and T&C, and the soundtrack to Pretty Woman and Bel Biv Devoe Poison and The Simpsons Sing the Blues, and Hypercolor, and British Knights and Reebok Pumps

We use them as giveaways for a pedestrian safety campaign. We give out reflective ones with info about pedestrian safety at outreach events.

My kid loves them. Someone in our neighborhood gave them out for trick or treating and my daughter was very excited about it! 😂

They were really popular with my gradeschool kids a year or two ago. Fallen out of popularity again now lol.
View on Reddit #13245955

artificialavocado@reddit

Well we didn’t have much back then so a piece of bendy metal was enough to keep us occupied a few weeks.
View on Reddit #13251222

artificialavocado@reddit

Does anyone else remember the urban legend that they got banned because supposedly the metal busted out and basically slashed someone wrist open and they died?
View on Reddit #13251019

M_Me_Meteo@reddit

Yeah but they don't have a dangerously sharp length of stainless steel in them anymore.
View on Reddit #13250954

Those things were banned from my 5th grade classroom a month into the school year.

Yes, Hank Green did a video on them and about how they are recycled tape measures. I was surprised he hadn't taken one apart as a kid.

Darr! Tattoo necklaces and bracelet stacks are back, too. Also wide leg/stovepipe jeans and tight little short baby t-shirts. Low rise jeans aren’t back in full swing, but in five years it’ll be hard to find high or medium waist jeans for women. Mark my words!
View on Reddit #13244304

Gotta do something with all those old tape measures.

Oh yeah! Just home from my kid’s 6th birthday party and you better believe every loot bag has a slap bracelet in them 😁. Also the decorations were fluorescent.

I recently bought a pack of 75 to include as party gifts for my kids' 90s themed party.
