Contractor for Former Employer

Has anyone actually left (quit or fired) a company - then been called back to delivery institutional knowledge or fix a system that is failing without you? If so, what did you charge? What legal protections (United States) did you setup head of time? Would you do it again, or let them burn? Asking for a friend.
