How do you feel about the imminent ban on XL bullies?

Obviously the government is moving forwards with a ban on XL bullies, a good thing or not?

It's a good thing. If people want a dog they can still own one of hundreds of different breeds. Even if you accept it's the owner not the breed, (I don't) the consequence of an attack by an XL dog is far greater than that of nearly all other breeds.

slippery slope and i don't think its a breed problem, but an owner problem. but i don't really care as it's not the type of dog I would ever get so it's not going to affect me 🤷🏻‍♂️

When a breed goes for people and children ts a breed problem not a owner problem
View on Reddit #13029911

Massive_Pay7381@reddit

It’s not a breed problem at all. There’s little evidence that genetically these dogs are more violent. It’s just unfortunate that the type of owners who are bad eggs go for these dogs and it’s unfortunately easier to ban the breed than the humans. It’s solely a human problem but almost impossible to rectify that way.

rubbish

But they definitely are a breed problem as well... they are all little cunts

Can’t it be …. Both? A chihuahua won’t kill you. A Bully XL can.

Well if those breeds are dangerous we probably should shouldnt we?

ok. i've been bitten by three chihuahuas and a jack russell. they can go first.

I've been bitten by a chihuahua, wee shite clamped down on my thigh. I ended up with a bruise and a tetnus jab. Thank fuck it wasn't some bull type dog, I doubt I'd have walked away with just a bruise if it was, if I walked away at all

Neither of those breeds are going to do anything other than give you a nasty nip, and you could yeet one away. Not the same as a canine terminator ripping your face off and feasting on your entrails is it

>slippery slope and i don't think its a breed problem, but an owner problem. Agreed, simply ban all large powerful dogs, regardless of breed. Enact bans based on characteristics, not breed. Makes it much easier to enforce too. This isn't fair on the many people who own large powerful dogs but can control them, but it also isn't fair that the many people who could own a gun without going mental shooting up a school are punished due to a small minority who would. But tough, such laws exist for a reason.

It's a good thing. This isn't an execution of dogs, it imposes safety measures on existing dogs to try prevent a problem rather than sitting back and waiting for it to happen.
View on Reddit #13029737

BassEvers@reddit

Agreed. Though I'm sure I read there is going to be ÂŁ200 in compensation available for anyone that has their XL Bully put down. Which is quite interesting. I don't know how much it is to put a dog down and as grim as the thought is of paying people to do it, at least the government are finally doing something about it.

Generally owned by people on universal credit

Erubadhron89@reddit

It won't reduce the number of dog attacks. It won't reduce the number of dangerous dogs. It's killed thousands of innocent dogs, and it will give thousands of people the impossible choice between homelessness or killing their family pet.

Goseki1@reddit

The ban doesn't mean all currently owned Bully XLs will be killed? What are you talking about?
View on Reddit #13031285

Goseki1@reddit

Of course it's a good thing, why wouldn't it be? My only issue is how it will be enforced etc and what consideration will be given to mixed bully breeds.

SimplyInept@reddit

Until I read the comments I thought you meant fat schoolyard bullies and I was completely confused! Personally I think you should need a license for 'dangerous' breeds and a blanket ban isn't the best option. But I don't know much about dogs/breeds so this is a POV from a hamster owner 😅.

I get a bit stuck on the "there's no bad dogs, only bad owners" thing. Which isn't to say that there aren't some awful goddamn people out there who will traumatise an animal to the point of it lashing out. My (genuine!) question is why, when a dog's breed is generally accepted to have a strong bearing on its temperament, it's so hard to believe that one could be more prone to violence than another.

kwakimaki@reddit

That's just it. Yes, the arseholes tend to go for these breeds, but the dog is just doing what it was bred to do. You stick a terrier in front of a rat, and you'll end up with a dead rat. Stick a terrier in front of a sheep, and you'll have a confused terrier. Would a Border Collie kill a rat? Maybe, but it will sure as hell try to herd anything it can. Dogs have been bred to do certain jobs over the years, sadly dog fighting hasn't disappeared. There will always be idiots who breed fighting dogs and there'll always be dogs that want to fight/ are naturally aggressive. No, that doesn't mean that every single bully, pitbull whatever, is definitely going to be aggressive but they are at higher risk.

The way people are defending this breed is the exact same way Americans defend guns, it’s all the same talking points…and we all know the reality behind that situation.

It’s overdue and hopefully the next weapon dog will be banned sooner along with stricter punishment for the owners / breeders and puppy farmers
View on Reddit #13030873

OldLondon@reddit

Not really a ban though is it. You can still own one, you need to register it and have it muzzled and on a lead in public and neutered - what’s the problem? Surely if you love your pet it’s a small price to pay?
View on Reddit #13030730

Alternative_Lunch541@reddit

Do believe owners are at fault but end of the day it’s easier to ban the breed to try ban ‘bad owners’ it’s sad but it’s the best way to do it

Non-Combatant@reddit

Mixed feelings. On one hand I'm not a fan of just banning everything and I don't see dogs as the main problem here. On the other a fair few people buy those kinds of dogs to use as weapons or to intimidate others so absolutely fuck them in particular. But mostly I'm not arsed as I'd never even heard of a bully XL until they hit the news and itl likely not affect me.

I have a small child so I can't really be rational about it. If there is any risk (and there certainly seems to be) of an XL Bully biting his face off (or worse) then ban them.
View on Reddit #13029500

BannedNeutrophil@reddit

Unfortunately, yeah. I'm in the same boat. My family has a tradition of rescuing greyhounds, and while they are incredibly docile animals, it's always in the back of my mind that they could kill my daughter in seconds if they chose to. Hell, I'm not sure that *I* would come out on top. If there's a risk that some dogs are prone to attacking people by default, then I don't want them anywhere near my family.

I love dogs but I love my daughter more. We live on the edge of a rough area and there’s a lot of unleashed dogs around. Just a couple weeks ago I was walking to the shop and a pitty/staffy cross came bounding across the road heading directly for me. I didn’t panic, just thought “oh great, hopefully I can get it off”, but it was just messing about running from its owner. There was a woman in a door way trying to wrangle a husky while screaming at this dog to come back. So I lured him back to her and went on with my day. My daughter is only 18 months old and she wasn’t with me, but the what-if scenarios are just too terrifying to entertain
View on Reddit #13030124

SecondPush4412@reddit

Nothing will change. People will get around the bans as breed specific legislation doesn't work, and existing XLs aren't going to be killed so they're still "here" and live a good ten years.
View on Reddit #13029968

I’ve always been of the opinion that problem dogs are due to problem owners. Banning the dog will probably just shift the issue to another breed
View on Reddit #13029900

YchYFi@reddit

I think it is the right thing as people can't be trusted to raise them properly. It is best for the dogs to not have to go through the suffering those owners put them through. One of them was off the lead the other day and went for my dog. It was quite scary.
