Flying stinks. What's the next deritus-based diversion going to be?

Former airline worker here, airplane is much dirtier than you can ever imagine. I've seen anything from a vomit minefield to something like trail of urine / various human excrements. And they were either on a seat or on the aisle, sometimes a combination of both.

They're not supposed to allow the intoxicated to board, though that's subjective. I've drunk heavily on and during and never puked. My last flight on BA, they poured champagne and red wine while we were eating in the FC lounge, and then plied me with LPGS while boarding (and this was an A380 so it took a while) and the Bourbon before dinner and two different wines with dinner. I didn't puke (though I was wearing their pajamas at the time so I guess I didn't care).

They're not supposed to allow those who appear to be intoxicated to board, however it is never enforced, even by the CA's. As long as they aren't causing trouble, they let them slide

What variations/attitudes do you see in those you deny boarding? Any correlations between gender, age, etc and reactions? Is one population more chill and one you know they’re gonna raise caine?

All shapes sizes and colors. It’s more about the station: Florida or Vegas and you’re likely to have at least one. If someone keeps their mouth shut and isn’t visibly weaving etc, we would have no reason to even suspect anything. The belligerent, loud, or falling-down types get the hook.

Sounds lightweight by BA FC pouring standards 😉 I’ve had cabin crew make you feel bad when you turn down a glass or offer you a wine flight if you’re not sure which one you want etc. I’ve long ago adopted a rule of one glass of water for every glass of alcohol in the lounge/onboard.

I agree, I think the occurrences will correlate with the increase in pre-flight amenities and credit card incentives for patrons to utilize all they can consume from mediocre buffets in sub par lounges.

I was on a flight into SLC two weeks ago where the pilot initiated a go-around. The lady sitting across the aisle from me projectile vomited all over my left leg and foot. After landing she left without saying a word to the cabin crew about it.

Back in my JSX days while starting engines in Vegas we get a "Cabin Emergency" call. That sounds serious, so we pick up and FA on the line said: "theres a guy back here that's completely shitfaced and puking. He's so blasted he can't even get it in the bag and projectile vomited all over row 1". Ok yeah that's pretty bad, he's clearly not fit to fly so open the door back, get the agent, a golf cart to drive back to the lounge, get his bag off, and all that charade. During the entire process he put up no objection and just sat there sulking on the golf cart regretting his life choices. I'm sure he must have felt miserable. Now were 30 min delayed waiting for the hazmat crew to come clean up. As we wait a lady from the back that you could only describe as straight out of "Real Housewives of OC" comes up to the FA and asks in a pretty condescending tone "why do we have to wait for this cleanup crew, can't YOU just clean it". Our FA was a retired cop and didn't take shit from anyone, but in his widest smile he just looked her in the eyes and said "I sure can but would you then like me to serve you a drink with the same hands?". The look of horror on her face, likely imagining that scene, told me she definitely got the point and went back to her seat. I'm always in favor of dealing with this sort of stuff before boarding. I asked the agent if they were supposed to deny boarding to someone visibly intoxicated and her answer was "yeah... but it's Vegas, we'd be turning down like every other passenger".

Was chatting with an FA on a previous trip to LAS and her anecdote was that they serve roughly 2-3x normal alcohol volumes on flights to Vegas but less than half on flights from Sin City…

It may not have been an intoxication event. Shortly after I got out of the Army I was sent to Walter Reed for a Gulf War Illness study for a little over a week. Part of the study was a spinal fluid sample. In typical VA fashion, no one told me to take it easy and not lift anything for 48 hours. So I get released to go home back to Denver and I pick up my 10 days or so worth of luggage and head to the airport. I walk through securty and head out to the gate. I am in the back row of the plane. Load my stuff in the overhead and sit my butt in the window aisle of the last seat on the left. Its of course a full flight...... We take off...... And then the migraine hits...... And then I start projectile vomiting..... I'm so sick I'm wishing I was dead....... The poor guy sitting next to me is in pure hell....... The stench from my puke must have been just aweful....... The FAs start bringing me bag after bag and I use them all up immediately. Thankfully I get it all in the bags. Between puking up stuff I ate a decade ago I explain to them that I had a spinal tap the day prior and this is apparently a side effect. Conversations apparently with the flight crew about diverting for my "medical emergency". I explained I am a pilot and currently medically grounded and the procedure that I just had. Thankfully had my paperwork with me. The flight crew agrees to continue the flight. To make matters worse I had a transfer in ORD and had to get a gate agent to put me in a wheelchair and wheel me over to the new gate which is of course in another terminal. I get on the ground in DEN a friend picks me up, I puke all the way home. Get home and spend the next week recovering from the worst migraine of my life. Getting up just to go to the bathroom would cause me to start puking.

On a small plane and guy in front of me puked against the window. The poor flight attendant was pregnant and had to deal with it. She sprinkled coffee grounds on it. We felt sorry for the guy until some guys on the plane told us he was pretty drunk getting on. We had just been served our food. Yuk.

I literally just a had a direct experience with something like this. This past Thursday (26 OCT), I was on a United flight from Dublin, IE to Chicago O'Hare. A hetero couple boarded the row directly ahead of me and it was clear the man was not in good shape. Shortly before we pushed back (doors closed), he extensively vomited into one of the on-board bags. The flight attendants came over to check on him and it was clear he was going downhill. The woman of the couple kept saying "oh, he's just passing a kidney stone - he'll be fine!" Ultimately, the crew re-opened the doors and the captain made the call to remove the passengers from the flight. The woman of the couple kept demanding to stay on-board and when it became clear they wouldn't be able to she started screaming "I want the captains name! I'm going to sue her!" Our flight ended up being almost two hours delayed because we had to go through all of the back-and-forth of the passengers plus the ground crew retrieving their bags. While it MAY be true that the man would have been fine (though I've never heard of this kind of reaction to passing a kidney stone), I understand that the captain has to make the right call for her flight. The last thing we want it to be halfway across the Atlantic and things to go downhill. Honestly, having witnessed it up close, the man looked like he wasn't "drunk" but he certainly was some level of inebriated.

I was on a UA flight that had a girl(21 or 22 maybe) 3 or 4 rows in front of me vomiting before we even pushed back, it was 4 or 5 times straight into the isle, which then proceeded to splash all over. We continued on like it was no big deal, I was shocked to say the least. Needless to say I could not wait to get off 3 hours later.

One time I threw up *all over* my seat when I was a kid on a US Airways flight. It was 20+ years ago but I smelt the fake eggs they were serving and it set me off I remember my mom apologizing profusely as we were deplaning lol
