In reality school shootings were happening back then. One of the worst was committed in the 1970s in california. When they asked the girl why she did it she just said that she hated mondays.
The 1970s isn't "back then". The original post photo was probably taken in 1960. Mass shooting started with communist infiltration and heavy LSD use causing psychosis in the late 60s
My dad and his buddies would take their shotguns to school and leave them in the office so they could hunt rabbits in the field behind the school after class.
Was just going to say—I remember my grandparents getting the Sears catalog, and how magical flipping through the toy section was back around the time of this exact catalog
I remember them too... Fun times... Coincidentally, my town hardware store is my local gun shop. They carry tons of stuff. I've bought everything from carry pistols to ARs there. It's kinda nice to pop in for new HVAC air filters or a new toilet tank kit and buy a couple boxes of ammo at the same time.
Fun fact, some of these catalogs or similar papers and magazines were used as packing filler in food, clothing and medicine donation packages to the Comm Block countries.
It opened up people’s eyes to what’s possible in the West better than Radio Free Europe ;)
I find it funny that the Sporterized Mauser costs 10 dollars more than the Mauser in full military configuration. Nowadays, the Mauser in full military configuration would have 2 or 3 times the value of the Sporterized Mauser.
It’s not nitpicking; I never said that their estimate was wrong.
The price quoted by u/ConfidentComparison7 is a correct result of the calculation the were using. I just wanted to know what inflation calculators produce different results.
PSA needs to make a 9mm, (and possibly a .40, .45) lever action carbines that takes Glock mags. Fun and legal in 50 states (and a good option for IL and WA). There’s not enough manufacturers making them and even my “cheap” Rossi R92 in .357 I bought this year still cost me $700. Marlin, Winchester, and Henry rifles are even more expensive. Henry .22s are priced decently but still more than a 10-22. There is a ton of demand for lever actions and not enough supply. I love my AR-15s but my lever action rifle comes with me on most range trips.
This really destroys the whole liberal argument about the availability semi-automatic rifles being a cause of mass shootings. In 1975, you could by a semi auto M1 carbine for $125 at Sears, with no formal background check. Why was it the case that back then, there were less mass shootings when such guns were more easily available than today?
I'm gonna say it's because we used to lock up the crazy people and give them medical treatment. Not just give them drugs and let them live amongst the rest of society. I'm not saying the "care" they received was not abuse or that the system was good. Just that there was a system and a process.
The drugs they prescribe for mental illness nowadays seems to dull the senses and alter the sense of reality. Not really great things to start taking unsupervised when you already have mental health issues.
While it is important to have due process to prevent such a mental health system from being abused (akin to red flag laws), we need a better system for mentally ill people to be able to get help. I live in Los Angeles and see mentally ill homeless people on the streets daily, all over town. Many of these people are already a harm to themselves and others but nothing is done and police officers have their hands tied. Mental health reform is a real issue, not a retort for people to deflect away from gun control, because it would be better at solving the mental health and violence crisis better than any gun control plan proposed.
As for the some of the treatment drugs I’ve had theories about it myself. I was on antidepressants for a couple years when my depression was at its peak and I stopped taking them once I got my life back on track. They robbed me of energy, vigor, and emotion. They soften the blow of depression but only temporarily, then I would have to switch medications and change dosages frequently in order to maintain such softening. Also, while I personally didn’t experience this, SSRIs can have side effects relating to homicidal and suicidal ideation, and I believe this potential danger is underreported and unaddressed. Mental health needs an overhaul but more pills is not the answer.
I got some old nra magazines from 1943 for Christmas. It's so interesting seeing how cheap and and easy things are to get. Ads like, "the new Springfield is good enough for our boys fighting the war it's good enough for you. Get yours as soon as our boys are back home."
Sears was in such a good position to become what Amazon is today ... They totally owned the mail order business. Somehow they just completely underestimated what the internet would be and just made zero effort to create an online store. Pretty amazing level of mismanagement that ended a legendary company
You're misunderstanding how hard it was to build consumer confidence in online retailing. Amazon didnt do it by throwing up a website, they did it by coming up with a frankly brilliant product choice for building that confidence: books. Easy to ship, no trying on or touching required to assess if it's satisfactory, interchangeable (in the sense that all 500 copies of the same printing of Huckleberry Finn are identical), and inexpensive enough to generate repeat customers.
bought my first rifle fourth of july 2022 and it was a Ted Williams 30-30 from sears made by winchester. in great condition from a pawn shop. wanted a 30-30 as my first ever rifle once i became old enough to buy one.

I love the description on the Ruger Model 44. Fast second shots plus the convenience of gas operation. $149.95! Take my money now! Today it goes for around $1000.
Their use to be a publication called shotgun news it was a sales paper for any gun part basically in the world, u could build machine guns from this catalog and buy whole sale guns I had a friend that built a fully auto tech 9 out of one in the 90's maybe it was a mac 10 idk I was a kid at the time, it shot 9mm, I shot it and the barrell just started going downward I almost shot myself it scared tf out of me when I hit it and it went full auto
"guns are too easy to get"
And people ignore the fact that it was completely legal to order a firearm with $50 through the mail until 1968 and background check systems, if present, were nowhere near as thorough or quick.
Honestly that points to so many other factors as contributing to the violence problem. I personally think we should critically examine our news cycle. Our current media has overall a much greater potential to sensationalize the hell out of events than before.
Yup, I would have only spent about $30k to get a decent setup in 1975. Gosh, how times have changed.. someone point me to the nearest time travel portal
I didn’t see any JC Higgins .22 bolt action rifles.
I bought one a few years back for $75 at a local gun store. It was made in 1947 and still shoots pretty well
Seems cool till you realize the average pay was $6.00hr and minimum wage was a little over $2.00hr in 1975. So that $70.00 22 was about half your paycheck.
yea they’re hit or miss. $400 if you’re lucky and they’re eh, $800 on average last i saw, $1k+ for a good one. the idea of my comment was more or less to point out the “back in my day i bought it for a mcchicken and $12” but that was still a very nice chunk of change, taking inflation into account, back then lmao
Sear's got it's ass kicked by Walmart in the 80s & 90s followed by Lowe's and Home Depot in the 2000s. The held on to legacy anchor positions in too many dying malls for far too long.
Neat, I see three guns in here I own
Browning A5, Browning auto load .22, and the Browning BAR in .270
Looks like my grandfather had expensive taste, relatively.
I am also a conniseur of the finer things in life:
*Sex Panther*® is a cologne which is illegal in 9 countries.
It is also made from bits of real panthers.
*60% of the time*, it works ***every*** *time.*
Adjusted for inflation, the prices aren't all that great. The easiest to compare is the Ruger 10/22 for $73.50. That's a bit over $400 now. You can buy them all day long for under $300 now.
That Browning for 399 must have really been nice. That has to be over a thousand now based on inflation.
I like collecting these old store-branded guns. They're getting harder and harder to find.
I have a sears shotgun that I inherited. It's actually the biggest piece of crap that I own. Stock is cheap plastic, the sight at the end is actually just a soldered bb that someone must have put on at Friday at 4:58 pm while slamming down non gay budlight at the time.
I know it's a remnant of a time last, but I can't help but look at it with disgust
I have that Ted Williams .22lr rifle on slide three. I never knew what they went for originally, but $70 sounds about right. It’s pretty low quality overall, but it was my great grandpas 😂
