In reality school shootings were happening back then. One of the worst was committed in the 1970s in california. When they asked the girl why she did it she just said that she hated mondays.

The 1970s isn't "back then". The original post photo was probably taken in 1960. Mass shooting started with communist infiltration and heavy LSD use causing psychosis in the late 60s

I remember them too... Fun times... Coincidentally, my town hardware store is my local gun shop. They carry tons of stuff. I've bought everything from carry pistols to ARs there. It's kinda nice to pop in for new HVAC air filters or a new toilet tank kit and buy a couple boxes of ammo at the same time.

View on Reddit #1146323

twenty_gauge@reddit

PSA needs to make a 9mm, (and possibly a .40, .45) lever action carbines that takes Glock mags. Fun and legal in 50 states (and a good option for IL and WA). There’s not enough manufacturers making them and even my “cheap” Rossi R92 in .357 I bought this year still cost me $700. Marlin, Winchester, and Henry rifles are even more expensive. Henry .22s are priced decently but still more than a 10-22. There is a ton of demand for lever actions and not enough supply. I love my AR-15s but my lever action rifle comes with me on most range trips.

This really destroys the whole liberal argument about the availability semi-automatic rifles being a cause of mass shootings. In 1975, you could by a semi auto M1 carbine for $125 at Sears, with no formal background check. Why was it the case that back then, there were less mass shootings when such guns were more easily available than today?
View on Reddit #1141726

invisibullcow@reddit

Well those guns aren't colored black and they have wood parts so they are a lot safer, you see.
View on Reddit #1149028

I believe guns should not be judged by the color of their finish but by the content of their magazines.
View on Reddit #1162370

TyroneBiggummms@reddit

I'm gonna say it's because we used to lock up the crazy people and give them medical treatment. Not just give them drugs and let them live amongst the rest of society. I'm not saying the "care" they received was not abuse or that the system was good. Just that there was a system and a process. The drugs they prescribe for mental illness nowadays seems to dull the senses and alter the sense of reality. Not really great things to start taking unsupervised when you already have mental health issues.
View on Reddit #1142950

twenty_gauge@reddit

While it is important to have due process to prevent such a mental health system from being abused (akin to red flag laws), we need a better system for mentally ill people to be able to get help. I live in Los Angeles and see mentally ill homeless people on the streets daily, all over town. Many of these people are already a harm to themselves and others but nothing is done and police officers have their hands tied. Mental health reform is a real issue, not a retort for people to deflect away from gun control, because it would be better at solving the mental health and violence crisis better than any gun control plan proposed. As for the some of the treatment drugs I’ve had theories about it myself. I was on antidepressants for a couple years when my depression was at its peak and I stopped taking them once I got my life back on track. They robbed me of energy, vigor, and emotion. They soften the blow of depression but only temporarily, then I would have to switch medications and change dosages frequently in order to maintain such softening. Also, while I personally didn’t experience this, SSRIs can have side effects relating to homicidal and suicidal ideation, and I believe this potential danger is underreported and unaddressed. Mental health needs an overhaul but more pills is not the answer.

Sears was in such a good position to become what Amazon is today ... They totally owned the mail order business. Somehow they just completely underestimated what the internet would be and just made zero effort to create an online store. Pretty amazing level of mismanagement that ended a legendary company
View on Reddit #1141436

LigPortman69@reddit

They had the infrastructure. All of of it. They just had to flip the switch.
View on Reddit #1170411

DasKapitalist@reddit

You're misunderstanding how hard it was to build consumer confidence in online retailing. Amazon didnt do it by throwing up a website, they did it by coming up with a frankly brilliant product choice for building that confidence: books. Easy to ship, no trying on or touching required to assess if it's satisfactory, interchangeable (in the sense that all 500 copies of the same printing of Huckleberry Finn are identical), and inexpensive enough to generate repeat customers.
View on Reddit #1169669

They actually shut down their mail order operations in favor of physical stores just as the internet was getting popular.

14DusBriver@reddit

"guns are too easy to get" And people ignore the fact that it was completely legal to order a firearm with $50 through the mail until 1968 and background check systems, if present, were nowhere near as thorough or quick. Honestly that points to so many other factors as contributing to the violence problem. I personally think we should critically examine our news cycle. Our current media has overall a much greater potential to sensationalize the hell out of events than before.
