I'm doing a spur of the moment trip to NYC and need help finding where to sleep for 2 nights

I'll be getting there December 6th and leaving the 8th. I'll land at La Guardia. Where is a good place to stay for cheap?

I'd recommend Chelsea International Hostel. Excellent location, decent price. You can even get good deals on private rooms there sometimes, although obviously dorm will be cheaper.

I just booked with Chelsea. Private room for 2 nights $160USD

hi. Can we do laundry in Chelsea international hostel?
jupitercon35@reddit
Enjoy! It's pretty basic but like I said the location is amazing. Since you said you've only got about a day to explore, I'd recommend mainly walking around - NYC is very walkable and you can cover a lot of distance in a day. Might be worth taking the subway up to central park too, although there are some lovely smaller parks/squares in walking distance from that location such as Madison Square Park, Bryant Park, Union Square and Washington Square Park.
I'd highly recommend walking the high line too! Also if you like bagels, I loved Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company on 8th Avenue.

Hi New York City Hostel
westsenecagal@reddit
I like the New Yorker hotel. Very convenient location, safe. Clean

I will definitley check out hostels. I don't know anything about them, can you fill me in please?
delightful_caprese@reddit
You sleep in a room with other people in it and it costs less than sleeping in a room without other people in it

Jail?

I wish I could still give awards.

Oh haha that's different for sure but i'm open to it all

Google maps is really good at giving directions. All Starbucks have free wifi, cups of water and some have bathrooms.
chichilover@reddit (OP)
I'm assuming there's tons of Starbucks
Bklynzizi1@reddit
Most areas have 1 every few blocks
chichilover@reddit (OP)
Wow perfect! Thanks for the advice. Do they take care of the snow well? Are the sidewalks clear usually?
Bklynzizi1@reddit
They are very good at clearing snow from Manhattan, the other boroughs not so much.
chichilover@reddit (OP)
Perfect because i'm debating on skating

YMCA on the upper westside has rooms for a pretty good price. Some with private bathrooms.

I stayed at Bowery Grand Hotel (rated 2.3/5) for less than £50/night in Lower Manhattan / Chinatown. Great location. If you have very low expectations, I still probably wouldn't recommend it, but it's an option. The bed was actually really comfortable and the setup IMO is slightly better than a hostel because you're not sharing a bunk. The walls are very thin. The shared bathrooms are an abomination. There were a few small cockroaches sometimes. Didn't see any bed bugs when I stayed there, but I imagine they're definitely there, or incredibly high risk...
If you have any questions let me know ✌️

What's the best way to get around? Taxi or train?
Nathannnnnnnn@reddit
Cheapest is definitely using the metro + walking. I never stepped foot in a taxi/uber because I know it'd cost way more than metro. Bikes are probably fairly cheap too but I didn't use them. Being there for 2 days is a bit of an awkward period of time because you wouldn't be able to make full use of the OMNY 7 day.

I'm just going to walk around the city for a full day and then head home next day morning. The day I land i'll have some time to grab dinner
FriendOfTheDevil2980@reddit
You're flying to NYC just to walk around for 1 day?!?!
chichilover@reddit (OP)
Yea land mid afternoon. Hang out. Spend the next day walking around. Then the next day leave around noon. I just said fuck it the tickets were really cheap rn
FriendOfTheDevil2980@reddit
I hope you realize you're barely going to be able to see anything unless you just pick a couple things, or all things in one neighborhood
1 days is basically 0 time in a city that big
chichilover@reddit (OP)
Yea I understand. Even if I just walk and look at stores all day i'll be content. I just got to get out of here even if it's for 2 days
Debasering@reddit
Pick a different destination imo. Something smaller and more quant would be infinitely better, you’re making a mistake to be honest

Stick to lower Manhattan. Greenwich Village, East Village , Chinatown, Lower East Side, Soho, and little Italy. A lot of NYC to see in easy walking distance.
bhootpoorwa@reddit
Have you ever been to NYC? Just walk, train, bus, city bike. No need for a taxi, ever
chichilover@reddit (OP)
No never been. I wanted to stay away from Taxis but i'll need to find a way from La Guardia to my hostel
bhootpoorwa@reddit
Take the train and bus
Debasering@reddit
No subway or train from La guardia. There should be a bus that gets you to downtown Manhattan (q70) and it is free. It runs often
chichilover@reddit (OP)
Will do thanks for the advice! I've never traveled solo this far away before
justalookin005@reddit
Unlimited public transit pass for length of stay.

Be wary of one-star and two-star hotels in the outer boroughs right now; many have become refugee centers due to the migrant crisis, so be sure to read the review because sometimes hotels continue accepting reservations despite being de facto homeless or migrant shelters
The Long Island City neighborhood in Queens is right across the East River from Manhattan (only one or two stops away on the subway) and has affordable hotels, but try to stay in Manhattan if you can swing it
The subway is safe but somewhat complex; use Google Maps to help with wayfinding. If you have a contactless credit or debit card or have Apply Pay or Google Pay set up on your phone, you can use it to pay for transit. If you use the same card/method to pay 12 times, all additional rides are free within a seven-day period
Cheap eats are easy to find in NYC. Chinatown has tons of very affordable food, and pizza slice shops will be your friend, too
The best thing to do in NYC is walking around and soaking in the vibe. Check out some parks and do some people-watching; visit the High Line (free!) and walk the full length, go to Central Park, head downtown to the Financial District, and check out the World Trade Center. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is chaotic but fun, and Brooklyn Bridge Park has amazing views of lower Manhattan
You'll have a good time; accommodations are expensive, but getting around and activities and food can be extremely affordable

Thank you for all of us! I will squeeze in as much as I can
