What fairly cheap household object/appliance has made a notable difference to your living standard?

Agreed life changing device. However thought needs to be given to what type and where it goes. Dont buy that £20 thing off your fav. shopping website without doing a little research, I didn't and now I own three. Here’s my take on things , There’s three main types and I’ve bought all three as learning the hard way is what I do best. The **Compressor** I bought a \~ £160 no brand online , it's a compressor type and it's been working great over the summer. Last couple days it hasn't been working at all due to it freezing up as the inlet side where the cold plates are, turned to a sheet of ice. I learnt that compressor type dehumidifiers can only operate at certain temp and it's too cold and i'm too cheap to allow them the air temp to work ( + 16degC ). They can be a bit noisy when the compressor is clicking on and off, and they weigh a fair bit if you want to move them room to room. Ideal if you keep your home / the room you want to use it in above the min required temp. The **Desiccant** Currently I'm waiting for a 2nd one / new one (desiccant based) to arrive this type will draw three times more energy to run (up to 600w) vs the compressor type (\~200w), but it works down to 1degC temps and all that extra power it uses ? It puts out as heat / warm air , which is fine by me and fits perfectly for my needs. The **Peltier** / “**Thermoelectric**” - My first purchase, a peltier dehumidifier, these also don't work in the cold and hardly work at all in ideal conditions. These small, almost novelty sized units often come with a low voltage high current mains adaptor, incapable of removing moisture from a regular sized room, maybe useful for a cupboard if you ignore the terribly high power usage for the slow extraction of a pathetic amount water removed from the air. You get the idea just how bad these units are when their collection water tank is listed in hundreds of millilitres, or double digit ounces rather than the usual litres the rest spec. Pay attention to what they claim their extration rate is at ideal working temp per day , consider if it's less than a glass of water a day, what's even the point. The other types will likley pull out lires of water in the same time.
